  • In this work, new multi-recycling options of TRU nuclides using PWR fuel assemblies comprised of MOX and FCM (Fully Ceramic Micro Encapsulated) fuels are suggested and neutronically analyzed. These options do not use a fully recycling of TRU but a partial recycling where TRUs from MOX fuels are recycled while the ones from FCM fuels are not recycled due to their high consumption rate resulted from high burnup. In particular, additional external TRU feed in MOX fuels for each cycle was considered to significantly increase the TRU consumption rate and the finally selected option is to use external TRU and enriched uranium feed as a makeup for the heavy metal consumption in MOX fuels. This hybrid external feeding of TRU and enriched uranium in MOX fuel was shown to be very effective in significantly increasing TRU consumption rate, maintaining long cycle length, and achieving negative void reactivity worth during recycling.

  • We have fabricated an in situ ellipsometer operating at He-Ne wavelength. It can be applied to the real-time, in-situ tracking of the ellisometric change which occurs during various sample treatments. As a rotating analyzer type, all optical elements and related parts are designed to share a common hollow-axis configuration, and hence the ellipsometer is compact in shape and simple in design. It is mountable on the spare ports of vacuum chamber with ease. Using this ellipsometer, we observed the effective density variation of previously grown $TiO_2$ thin films by using electron beam evaporation. The packing density of the as-grown film was 82%. When exposed to atomsphere, the micro-void of the film was filled with water vapor. This water-filled $TiO_2$ thin film was subject to heating/cooling cycles in vacuum and the ellipsometric variation versus temperature and cycling number was measured in real time using this in situ He-Ne ellipsometer.

  • This study has been carried out to develop a CRT die using hot forging. The conventional CRT die made by casting has defects such as void and inclusion. These defects of the cast die make micro-spots on the surface of the CRT which affect the quality of the final product. So, a hot forging process is developed to avoid these defects of CRT die by the model material test and the rigid-plastic FEM. Firstly, model material tests are carried out with plasticine billets in order to investigate the material flow pattern in the die cavity and to get the reasonable initial values for designing the preform in the FE simulation. And then a finite element analysis has been performed to Predict the preform and the forging load of a CRT die. We also suggest an integrated die-set which combines two die-sets into one die-set to save manufacturing time and cost in case of similar die-size.

  • The incomplete saturation and the void formation during the resin infiltration into fibrous porous media in the resin transfer molding process cause failure in the final product during its service. In order to better understand flow behavior during the filling process, a finite-element scheme for transient flow simulation across the micro-structured fibrous media is developed in the present work. A volume-of- fluid (VOF) method has been incorporated in the Eulerian frame to capture the evolution of flow front and the vertical periodic boundary condition has been combined to avoid unwanted wall effect. In the microscale simulation, we investigated the transient filling process in various fiber structures and discussed the mechanism leading to the flow fingering in the case of random fiber distribution. Effects of the filling pressure, the shear-thinning behavior of fluid and the volume fraction on the flow front have been investigated for both intra-tow and the inter-tow flows in dual-scale fiber tow models.

  • Weldability of Mg alloy was investigated using servo-actuated DC resistance spot welder. Due to its uncommon electrical and mechanical properties, lots of voids and cracks were observed inside nugget with conventional weld schedule. Lobe curve was proposed to clarify proper electrode force and weld current, which guarantee reasonable weld strength and fatigue life. Macro structure of sectioned specimen was examined to count total number of void and crack. Post weld schedule is also proposed to reduce micro victors hardness value of weld zone.

  • During recent years the durability of concrete structures has attracted considerable interest in concrete practice, material research and long-term deformation. To preserve the brittleness of concrete as well as energy absorption and impact resistance, amount of fiber usage has greatly increased year to year in the field of public works. When fly ash, fine powder, mixed into concrete, it condensed the void of concrete structure. Expecially, there's a great effect for strength improvement of concrete by initial pozzolanic reactions. Pozzolan reaction, between cement particle and fly ash, can elaborate the micro structure of matrix. So it was able to improve the effect of fiber reinforced by increased adhesion between cement paste and steel fiber. And so, in this paper, we dealt SFRC for the purpose of efficiently using of industrial by-products and its economical manufacturing. Also we performed the test for durability such as chemical resistance, freeze-thaw resistance and accelerated carbonation of SFRC using fly ash.

  • Factors causing deterioration of concrete structures under marine environment are various, especially penetration and diffusion of chloride ion, carbon dioxide, and water through pore effects on the durability of concrete as well as mechanical properties of concrete. Pore of porous materials like concrete can be classified as micro-, meso-, and macro-pore. And pore of cement matrix is classified as pore which occupied by water, air void, and ITZ between cement paste and aggregates. In this study, to verify the relationship between pore of cement matrix and the property of chloride ion diffusivity, the regression analysis is producted. From the result of regression analysis, the average pore diameter more than total pore volume effects on the diffusivity of chloride ion.

  • The initial thermal degradation of polymer matrix composite is not observed easily. At the beginning of thermal degradation of polymer matrix composites, phase transformation such as chain scission, oxidation occur, and then micro delamination is produced in matrix and interface between matrix and fiber before blistering. Initial heat damage deteriorate mechanical properties of composites. We presented the detection method of the initial heat damage of composites conveniently using ultrasonic technique. Absorption coefficient and material velocity was measured with thermal degradation and degree of cure. The more thermal degradation was progressed, the more absorption coefficient was increased. When the cure temperature is more high, the absorption coefficient of cured composite is increased and material velocity is decreased. We concluded that cure temperature is more high, the defects such as void is increased and molecular structure cured at high temperature has cross-linking structure which is more absorb the ultrasonic waves.

  • We fabriacted thermal evaporated $10nm-Ni_{1-x}Co_x$(x=0.2, 0.6, and 0.7) films on 70 nm-thick polysilicon substrate with $0.5{\mu}m$ line width. NiCo composite silicide layers were formed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at the temperatures of $700^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$. Then, we checked the microstructure evaluation of silicide patterns. A FIB (focused ion beam) was used to micro-mill the interconnect patterns with low energy condition (30kV-10pA-2 sec). We investigated the possibility of selective removal of silicide layers. It was possible to remove low resistance silicide layer selectively with the given FIB condition for our proposed NiCo composite silicides. However, the silicides formed from $Ni_{40}Co_{60}$ and $Ni_{30}Co_{70}$ composition showed void defects in interconnect patterns. Those void defects hinder the selective milling for the NiCo composite silicides.
