Design Features and Operating Characteristics of the MC-50 Cyclotron (MC-50 싸이클로트론의 설계 특징과 동작 특성)

  • The MC-50 cyclotron at Korea Canter Center Hospital is now operational for neutron therapy and medical radioisotope production. Design features, mechanical structures and operating characteristics of the MC-50 are described in this paper. Optimum operating condition for this cyclotron has been determined by the repetitive running, and the performances of the internal beam have been investigated through the measurements of intensity and spatial distribution of the internal beam as a function of the radius of the cyclotron. Routinely, the 40 $\mu$A of 50 MeV protons have been obtained at first Faraday cup with a extraction efficiency of 61%.

Carbofuran Cytotoxicity on Rat Fibroblast Cells and Compensation Effects of Phenobarbital Sodium and 3-Methycholanthrene on Its Toxicity (살충제 Carbofuran이 쥐의 NIH3T3 섬유모세포에 끼치는 독성 및 Phenobarbital Sodium과 3-Methylcholanthrene에 의한 보상효과)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of phenobarbital sodium(PB) and 3-methylcholanthrene(3-MC) on carbofuran cytotoxicity and to develop antitoxic agents based on the effectivness. Experimental groups for carbofuran cytotoxicity were divided into five groups ; medium alone and four treatments of carbofuran (1, 25, 50 and $100{\mu}M)$, and those for compensation effects were divided into six groups ; medium alone, $IC_{50}$ carbofuran and four combinations of carbofuran and PB or 3-MC($IC_{50}$ carbofuran plus 1, 25, 50, $100{\mu}M$ of PB and 3-MC, respectively). After incubation for 48 hrs under the same conditions, MTT(Tetrazolium MTT), NR(Neutral red) and SRB(Sulforhodamine B protein) assay were performed. Fifty percentage inhibition of MTT, NR, and SRB against carbofuran in rat fibroblast cell were 60.7, 82.5 and $87.0{\mu}M$, respectively. At the combination treatments of $IC_{50}$ of carbofuran and $100{\mu}M$ of PB, the significant compensation effects were observed from the results of MTT and NR but not from that of SRB absorbance. And at the combination treatments of $IC_{50}$ of carbofuran and 3-MC, the relatively significant compensation effects were found at $50{\mu}M$ 3-MC from the results of MTT and at $100{\mu}M$ 3-MC from that of NR and SRB absorbances, respectively. From the results of light microscopy, combination treatments of $carbofuran(IC_{50})$ and PB or 3-MC showed good regeneration in carbofuran toxicity of rat fibroblast cells. These results suggest that PB or 3-MC can compensate the cytotoxity of carbofuran insecticide in rat NIH3T3 fibroblast cells.

MCCOY CONDITION ON IDEALS OF COEFFICIENTS

  • We continue the study of McCoy condition to analyze zero-dividing polynomials for the constant annihilators in the ideals generated by the coefficients. In the process we introduce the concept of ideal-${\pi}$-McCoy rings, extending known results related to McCoy condition. It is shown that the class of ideal-${\pi}$-McCoy rings contains both strongly McCoy rings whose non-regular polynomials are nilpotent and 2-primal rings. We also investigate relations between the ideal-${\pi}$-McCoy property and other standard ring theoretic properties. Moreover we extend the class of ideal-${\pi}$-McCoy rings by examining various sorts of ordinary ring extensions.

Study on Air-drying Characteristics of Taun Lumber and Air-dring Calendar(I) (타운 재목(材木)의 천연건조(天然乾燥) 특성(特性) 및 캘린더에 관한 연구(硏究)(I))

  • Air-drying tests were carried out on green taun (Pometia pinnata f glabra) for 25-mm and 50-mm thickness to elucidate drying characteristics on air-drying rate, time and defects in spring and air-drying calendar. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The air-dried lumber for 25-mm thickness from an initial average moisture content (MC) of $58.3{\pm}3.5$ percent reached 30 percent MC in 17 days, 25 percent MC in 24 days, 20 percent MC in 38 days and 15 percent MC in 84 days. 2. The air-dried lumber for 50-mm thickness from an initial average MC of $59.6{\pm}5.0$ percent reached 30 percent MC in 39 days, 25 percent MC in 55 days and 20 percent MC in 84 days. 3. Air-drying calendar that could be useful in estimating drying times for each month developed by the use of climatological data for Suwon. Total number of effective air-drying days during a year were 243.5 days and the major determinant of the effect air-drying days was temperature. 4. The air-drying rates for 25-mm and 50-mm coated lumber were slight1y slower than those of uncoated lumber. The number and total length of both end checks and surface checks for end coated lumber were less severe than those of uncoated lumber.

ON A GENERALIZATION OF MCCOY RINGS

  • Rege-Chhawchharia, and Nielsen introduced the concept of right McCoy ring, based on the McCoy's theorem in 1942 for the annihilators in polynomial rings over commutative rings. In the present note we concentrate on a natural generalization of a right McCoy ring that is called a right nilpotent coefficient McCoy ring (simply, a right NC-McCoy ring). The structure and several kinds of extensions of right NC-McCoy rings are investigated, and the structure of minimal right NC-McCoy rings is also examined.

  • A ring R is called linearly McCoy if whenever linear polynomials $f(x)$, $g(x){\in}R[x]{\backslash}\{0\}$ satisfy $f(x)g(x)=0$, there exist nonzero elements $r,s{\in}R$ such that $f(x)r=sg(x)=0$. In this paper, extension properties of linearly McCoy rings are investigated. We prove that the polynomial ring over a linearly McCoy ring need not be linearly McCoy. It is shown that if there exists the classical right quotient ring Q of a ring R, then R is right linearly McCoy if and only if so is Q. Other basic extensions are also considered.

Effect of Calcium Addition on Physicochemical Properties of Cellulose-Based Edible Films (칼슘을 첨가한 셀롤로우스 식용필름의 이화학적 특성)

  • The preparation and the functional properties of methylcellulose (MC) and hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose (HPMC) edible films with and without calcium were investigated. All the prepared films exhibited transparent and whitish color with $2.38{\sim}3.55$ haze intensity. Tensile strength of MC films were stronger than HPMC films with and without calcium, and moreover addition of calcium increased tensile, but elongation of HPMC film was specially lower than the other films. Solubility of films did not differ with calcium addition but decreased with increasing viscosity in HPMC films. water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of HPMC and MC film were not affected by calcium, but viscosity of film's raw material was important to determine WVTR in HPMC. Oxygen permeabilities of MC films were lower than those of HPMC films, and became lower with calcium addition. According to scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation on the surface characteristics, MC film with calcium had relatively uniform and smooth surface than HPMC films.

Antioxidative and Anti-aging Effects of Sancho (Zanthoxylum schinifolium) Extract in Rats Fed High Fat Diet

  • This study was performed to investigate antioxidative and anti-aging action of extracts from Sancho (Zanthoxylum schinifolium) leaves. Two extracts were obtained by 80% methanol extraction followed by subsequent fractionation with methylene chloride (MC) and n-butanol (B) and fed at one or three levels to rats on normal level (5%) of fat (control) and high fat(20%) in diets. Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing about 100 g were divided into ten groups such as control diet group(C), control diet+0.50%B group (CB), control diet+0.50%MC group (CMC), high-fat diet group (HF), high-fat diet+0.25%B group (HBL), high-fat diet+0.50%B group (HBM), high-fat diet+0.75%B group (HBH), high-fat diet+0.25%MC group (HMCL), high-fat diet+0.50%MC group (HMCM) and high-fat diet+ 0.75%MC group (HMCH) and fed each diet for four weeks. The effects of the extracts on antioxidant enzyme activities and indices of lipid peroxidation and aging were seen only in high fat diet groups. Hepatic superoxide dismutase and aryleaterase activities were not changed by Sancho extracts. But glutathione peroxidase, catalase and paraxonase activities were significantly restored by both MC and B at the level of 0.75% lipid peroxide which was increased by high fat diet was significantly reduced by B and MC at the level of 0.25% and over. Lipofuscin fluorescence and cabonyl value were increased by high fat diet were reduced by B and MC at the level of 0.5% and over. It is concluded that the Sancho extracts can be utilized as functional ingredients of health foods for reducing oxidative stress.

Analyses of Transpiration and Growth of Paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) as Affected by Moisture Content of Growing Medium in Rockwool Culture

  • Since the moisture content (MC) of growing medium closely related with the crop transpiration, the MC should be included to the environmental factors to be considered for irrigation control in soilless culture. The objective of this study was to analyze the transpiration of paprika plants using daily mean solar radiation (RAD) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) as well as the growth of the plants at different MCs of rockwool growing media. The starting points of irrigation were controlled by a moisture sensor with minimum set points of 40%, 50%, and 60% of MCs. The canopy transpirations were measured for 80 to 120 days after transplanting and analyzed. The transpirations were well regressed with a combination of both RAD and VPD rather than daily mean RAD only under the controlled MCs. The transpiration at 60% MC was higher than those at 50% and 40% MCs. Leaf area, leaf fresh and dry weights at 60% MC were higher than those at 50% and 40% MCs while the number of leaves had no significant difference among the MCs. There were no significant differences in number of fruits and fruit size among all the MCs, while fruit weight was significantly lower at 40% MC than other treatments. Fresh and dry fruit yields were the highest at 60% MC. Therefore it was concluded that the transpiration was affected by the MC of rockwool growing medium and the minimum set point of 50-60% MC of rockwool growing medium gave better effects on the growth of the paprika plants.

Effect of Zooplankton Exposures on the Biomass and Intracellular Microcystin in Microcystis aeruginosa and Planktothrix agadhii (동물플랑크톤 노출 강도가 유해남조 Microcystis aeruginosa와 Planktothrix agardhii의 생체량 및 세포내 microcystin함량변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to evaluate microcystin production by two strains of cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa and Planktothrix agardhii) in response to three different levels of direct (0,4,8 inds.) or indirect (0,25, 50% of zooplankton culture media filtrate) exposures to zooplankton (Daphnia magna and Moina macrocopa). The cell biomass and intracellular microcystin (MC) were measured everyday. The survival rates of zooplankton were evaluated for daily intervals for the direct exposure. The intracellular MC produced peaked on the day 3 or 4, and then decreased over the both exposure experiment. In the direct experiment, the MC values were significantly different among the control and zooplankton treatments (ZT; repeated measures-ANOVA: P< 0.039). The MC contents of P. agardhii strain (No.204) were significantly higher (Tukey test, P< 0.082) in ZT2 (8 inds.) than in ZT2 (4 inds.). On the peak day, the intracellular MC exposed to both zooplanktons was significantly higher than the control (One-way ANOVA, P< 0.021). Higher zooplankton survivals were observed in the M. aeruginosa strain (No. 111) rather than in high toxic P. agardhii strain. In the indirect experiment, the intracellular MC of the M. aeruginosa strain was significantly different among the control and zooplankton culture media filtrate (ZCMF)treatments (rm-ANOVA: P<0.004), The MC exposed ZCMF2 (50%) were significantly higher than in ZCMFI (25%: Tukey test, P< 0.025) for both strains. This study strongly supports the induced-defensive MC production of potentially toxic cyanobacteria in response to the presence of zooplankton.
