  • Viral infectious diseases have been regarded as one of the greatest threats to global public health. The recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a stark reminder of the threat posed by emerging viral infections. Developing and producing appropriate and efficient vaccines and therapeutics are the only options to combat this pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for novel vaccine platforms to control and prevent emerging viral diseases. Conventional vaccine platforms, including live-attenuated vaccine and inactivated vaccines, pose limitations in the speed of vaccine development, manufacturing capacity, and broad protection for emergency use. Interestingly, vaccination with the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate based on the mRNA-lipid nanoparticle (LNP) platform protected against COVID-19, confirming that the nucleoside-modified candidate is a safe and effective alternative to conventional vaccines. Moreover, the prophylactic strategies against the COVID-19 pandemic have been mRNA nucleic acid-based vaccines and nanoparticle-based platforms, which are effective against SARS-CoV-2 and its variants. Overall, the novel vaccine platform has presented advantages compared with the traditional vaccine platform in the COVID-19 pandemic. This review explores the recent advancements in vaccine technologies and platforms, focusing on mRNA vaccines, digital vaccines, and nanoparticles while considering their advantages and possible drawbacks.

  • In FMS (Flexible Manufacturing System) and CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing), machine-tools have been the target of integration in the last three decades. The conventional concept of integration is being changed into the autonomous manufacturing device based on the knowledge evolution by applying advanced information technology in which an open architecture controller, high-speed network and internet technology are included. In the advanced environment, the machine-tools is not the target of integration anymore, but has been the key subject of cooperation. In the near future, machine-tools will be more improved in the form of a knowledge-evolutionary intelligent device. The final goal of this study is to develop an intelligent machine having knowledge-evolution capability and a management system based on internet operability. The knowledge-evolutionary intelligent machine-tools is expected to gather knowledge autonomically, by producing knowledge, understanding knowledge, reasoning knowledge, making a new decision, dialoguing with other machines, etc. The concept of the knowledge-evolutionary intelligent machine is originated from the machine control being operated by human experts' sense, dialogue and decision. The structure of knowledge evolution in M2M (Machine to Machine) and the scheme for a dialogue agent among agent-based modules such as a sensory agent, a dialogue agent and an expert system (decision support agent) are presented in this paper, with intent to develop the knowledge-evolutionary machine-tools. The dialogue agent functions as an interface for inter-machine cooperation. To design the dialogue agent module in an M2M environment, FIPA (Foundation of Intelligent Physical Agent) standard platform and the ping agent based on FIPA are analyzed in this study. In addition, the dialogue agent is designed and applied to recommend cutting conditions and thermal error compensation in a tapping machine. The knowledge-evolutionary machine-tools are expected easily implemented on the basis of this study and shows a good assistance to sensory and decision support agents.

  • In the existing smart home, a separate platform was set up for each manufacturer to provide services through terminals. However, due to the development of Internet technology, various Internet devices and services have been launched, and there is a limit to the existing closed platforms for each manufacturer. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an object internet controller that integrates control of Internet devices in a smart home environment and provides various services through IFTTT. The proposed Internet controller is connected to the server via WiFi, and can control the Internet device and service of objects through the button input event. In addition, we expect to be able to provide a service environment that can create various smart home services by registering DIY products through open platform of oneM2M standard method.

  • A simple preparation method on creating superhydrophobic surface using non-aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was demonstrated. Superhydrophobic CNT thin films were prepared by doping a sonicated mixture of CNTs and chloroform onto a glass slide. Water contact angles of the CNT thin films were measured using a contact angle goniometer. The thin films were characterized using laser microscope and scanning electron microscope. Experimental results revealed that the highest average contact angle of $162{\pm}2^{\circ}$ was achieved when the films' thickness was $1.628{\mu}m$. The superhydrophobic surface was stable as the contact angle only receded from $162{\pm}2$ to $157{\pm}2^{\circ}$ after 10 min under normal atmospheric condition.

  • Recently, Web 3.0 services such as virtual currency, block chain, and NFT are attracting public attention. Users who depended on platforms are moving away from being dependent on service providers and moving to Web 3.0 services. Representative services of Web 3.0 include P2E (Play to Earn) and M2E (Move to Earn). In the case of P2E, various studies have been conducted as it is widely covered in the press and media, but research on M2E is relatively lacking. This study attempts to identify the intention to use M2E by using the expanded technology acceptance model. External factors were selected based on M2E's own characteristics and personal characteristics, a research model was designed, and the proposed hypotheses were verified through factor analysis and goodness of model fit. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that profitability, innovativeness, and self-expression had a positive effect on perceived characteristics, and that perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, and social influence had a positive effect on intention to use. Through the research results, practical implications for efficient service operation that meets the needs of users are presented to M2E platform providers.

  • The southeasternmost coastal area of the Korean peninsula has been regarded as a seismologically stable area as neither Quaternary faults nor earthquake activity has been reported. To clarify whether the active tectonic movement has occurred or not, a digital marine terrace mapping and fracture mapping have been done in the coastal area. Bed rocks are composed of the Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks and the Paleogene granite. Wave-cut platform in the area is smaller and narrower relative to that of the northern coastal area. Most of the platforms in the area have little Quaternary sediment. The platforms except the Holocene terrace (1 st terrace) can be divided into three steps. The lowest platform (2nd terrace) has an altitude of 8-11 m. The broad middle one (3rd terrace) is 17 to 22 m high. The highest terrace (4th terrace) is a narrow and sporadic bench with an altitude of about 44 m high. The lowest terrace is correlated to the 2nd terrace of the northern area, which corresponds to the oxygen isotopic stage 5a. The uplift rate calculated from a graphic method is 0.19 m/ky. This low uplift is typical of an intra-plate, suggesting that the area is tectonically stable. The elevation of the platforms tends slightly lower from the north to the south in the survey area. The decreasing altitude of the platforms towards the south is interpreted to result from a local block tilting during the Latest Pleistocene. This also indicates that the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula has been suffering a subsidence to the south.

  • Big data analytics and AI play a critical role in the development of smart plants. This study presents a big data platform for plant data and an 'AutoML platform' for AI-based plant O&M(Operation and Maintenance). The big data platform collects, processes and stores large volumes of data generated in plants using Hadoop, Spark, and Kafka. The AutoML platform is a machine learning automation system aimed at constructing predictive models for equipment prognostics and process optimization in plants. The developed platforms configures a data pipeline considering compatibility with existing plant OISs(Operation Information Systems) and employs a web-based GUI to enhance both accessibility and convenience for users. Also, it has functions to load user-customizable modules into data processing and learning algorithms, which increases process flexibility. This paper demonstrates the operation of the platforms for a specific process of an oil company in Korea and presents an example of an effective data utilization platform for smart plants.

  • Accurate estimations of pre-failure deformations and post-failure responses of geostructures require that the simulation tool possesses at least three main ingredients: 1) a constitutive model that is able to describe the macroscopic stress-strain-strength behavior of soils subjected to complex stress/strain paths over a wide range of confining pressures and densities, 2) an embedded length scale that accounts for the intricate physical phenomena that occur at the grain size scale in the soil, and 3) a computational platform that allows the analysis to be carried out beyond the development of an initially "contained" failure zone in the soil. In this paper, a two-scale micropolar plasticity model will be used to incorporate all these ingredients. The model is implemented in a finite element platform that is based on the mechanics of micropolar continua. Appropriate finite elements are developed to couple displacement, micro-rotations, and pore-water pressure in form of $u_n-{\phi}_m$ and $u_n-p_m-{\phi}_m$ (n > m) elements for analysis of dry and saturated soils. Performance of the model is assessed in a biaxial compression test on a slightly heterogeneous specimen of sand. The role of micropolar component of the model on capturing the post-failure response of the soil is demonstrated.

  • In the past few years, M2M (Machine-to-Machine) applications have become a hot topic in the wireless industry. While M2M applications can be used for many purposes (smart homes, smart metering/electricity meter reading, fleet management, mobile workforce, automobile insurance, vending machines, etc), and in many sectors (healthcare, agriculture, commercial, industrial, retail, utility, etc.), smart metering applications or smart grids present the biggest growth potential in the M2M market today. M2M platform is the future ubiquitous network technologies which provide the integrated service with the networks and devices. The promising technologies to tackle these problems are the Semantic technologies, for interoperability, and the Agent technologies for management of complex systems. In this paper the information communication technique based on the disaster prevention system's for the M2M, concepts and its requirement technology and application are studied.
