A Tidal Model of the East Sea (동해의 조석수치모형)

  • With the use of the two-dimensional tidal model including the tide generating potential tend tidal charts of four major tidal constituents (M$_2$, S$_2$, $K_1$, $O_1$) are presented in the East Sea (Japan Sea). Model results showed that the inclusion of tide generating force does influence the position of semi-diwrual amphidrumes in the Korean east coast but computed results are generally in .good agreements with coastal observations and also empirically drawn existing charts of this region.

Vertical Distribution of Tidal Current in the Korea Strait (대한해협조류의 3차원적 분포)

  • Vertical distribution of tidal currents in the Korea Strait is computed by a tree-dimensional tidal model. The results are presented in the from of tidal charts (coamplitude and cophase chart) and (tidal ellipses charts for eight tidal constituents (M$_2$, S$_2$, $N_2$, $K_2$, $K_1$, $O_1$, P$_1$, Q$_1$) and of harmonic constants for predictions of tides and tidal currents during specified duration in the region. The computed tides were in general agreement with coastal observations and observation-based tidal charts of Odamaki (1989). Comparison between model computation and current observation by RIAM were also presented.

Tidal Characteristics Change in the Asan Bay due to the Hwaong (Namyang Bay) Tidal Barrier (화옹 (남양만) 방조제에 따른 아산만의 조석변화)

  • In order to identify the change of tidal characteristics on average in the Asan Bay due to the construction of the Hwaong (Namyang Bay) tidal barrier (HTB), the tide data at Pyongtack (PT) and Anheung (AH) for the periods from 1993 to 2006 were analyzed using the harmonic analysis method, and major and shallow water tidal constituents were compared. The semidiurnal tidal amplitudes at PT increased while those at AH decreased after the tidal barrier construction. In particular, the amplitudes at PT increased abruptly during the period of $2002{\sim}2003$ when HTB was completed. On the other hand, the amplitudes of the diurnal tides at PT and AH showed minimal change. This suggests that the tidal characteristics change in the Asan Bay may be related to the construction of HTB. The cause of this change is different from either blocking the tidal wave propagation by the Keum River tidal barrier or removing 'choking effect' by the Yeongsan River tidal barrier. The $M_4/M_2$ ratio increased and their phase difference decreased after the completion of HTB. Accordingly, these changes may result in increase of tidal range, decrease of the flood duration and increase of the flood current velocity, inducing more sediments into the Asan Bay.

A Study of the Hydrographic Conditions and Tidal Front on the Northern Coastal Area of Cheju Island (제주도 북부연안역의 해황과 조석전선 특성)

  • The general pattern of the hydrographic conditions and tidal front of the northern coastal area of Cheju Island is investigated using the CTD observation data and a stratification parameter V ($J/m^3$) in $1991\~1993$. 1. The sea water of the northern coastal area of Cheju Island has a lower temperature and higher salinity than that in the central area of the Strait, and local temperature and salinity fronts appears frequently around this area. It seems that they are caused by the upwelling and the tidal front as well as a local topography. 2. A saddle-like distribution of temperature and salinity is formed in the Cheju Strait almost every month with relation to mixing of the different water masses. 3. In the northern coastal area of Cheju Island the stratification parameter V ($J/m^3$) was ranged from 8.4 to 209.8 $J/m^3$ in June, 201.9 to 634.9 $J/m^3$ in August, 0.18 to 680 $J/m^3$ in September, and $2.7\~462\;J/m^3$ in October, respectively. The tidal front was often formed around the place where the horizontal variation of the depth is very large and the potential energy with 10$J/m^3$ appears roughly along 50 m isobath.

The tidal effect of seawater/freshwater interface at the coastal aquifer of the Yongho Bay in Busan (부산 용호만 해안대수층에서 해수/담수 경계면의 조석효과)

  • 본 연구에서는 부산시 용호만 해안대수층에서 전기전도도와 지하수위의 수직적인 관측을 통해, 조석에 의한 해수/담수 경계면의 변동을 산정하였다. 연구지역은 부경대학교 대연캠퍼스 기숙사 신축부지 주변 해안대수층이며, 응회질퇴적암과 안산암 및 안산암질 화산각력암 등으로 구성되어 있다. 관측공의 개발심도는 120 m, 케이싱심도는 19 m, 내경은 0.2 m, 관측공과 해안선의 이격거리는 180 m 정도이다. 전기전도도에 의해 산정된 밀도는 담수에서 997.58 $kg/m^3$, 해수에서 1020.36 $kg/m^3$ 이었다. 관측기간(2008년 8월 21일${\sim}$10월 18일) 동안 해수/담수 경계면의 변동 범위는 해수면 기준 -21.69${\sim}$-21.53 m 이었으며, 경계면의 평균 위치는 해수면 기준 -21.62 m 정도이었다. 해수/담수 경계면과 지하수위의 상관성은 매우 높게 나타났으며, 해안대수층 내 해수/담수 경계면의 변동은 조석의 일(고조, 저조) 및 보름(대조, 소조) 단위의 변동에 영향을 받고 있음이 확인되었다. 관측기간 동안 지하수위는 전반적으로 하강하는 경향을 나타내었으며, 이는 관측기간이 풍수기에서 갈수기로 전환되고 있었기 때문이다. 향후에는 지속적인 관측을 통해, 용호만 해안의 해수면 상승에 의한 내륙으로의 해수침투를 연구하고자 한다.

  • 동해는 Korea Strait, Tsugaru Strait Soya Strait, Mamiya Strait의 좁은 해협으로 동중국해의 북동해역, 태평양 및 Okhotsk 해로 연결되나, 해협부의 폭과 수심이 작아 폐쇄된 해역으로 볼 수 있다. 동해에 대한 조석현상을 파악하기 위해서는 Ogura(1933)와 Nishida(1980)의 한국 주변해역(동아시아)에 대한 경험적인 조석도를 참고할 수 있으며, Odamaki(1989a)는 대한해협에서의 자료를 재편집하여 개선된 조석도를 제시하였다. (중략)

Detection of Ocean Tide Loading Constituents Based on Precise Point Positioning by GPS (GPS 정밀단독측위기법을 이용한 해양조석하중 분조성분 검출)

  • In this study, the Ocean Tide Loading (OTL) constituents were detected by the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) technique using GPS. Then, the GPS estimates of OTL constituents were compared with the predictions of the ocean tide models. We picked three permanent GPS stations as test sites and they are ICNW, SEOS, and CJUN. To detect the OTL constituents using GPS, we created vertical coordinate time series at 10-minute intervals using the PPP approach implemented in the GIPSY software. Through the tidal harmonic analysis of this height time series, the four major constituents ($M_2$, $S_2$, $K_1$, $O_1$) were determined. The amplitude obtained from the GPS height time series of the OTL constituents showed best match with the model predictions at CJUN, while the phase showed closest match at ICNW. The amplitude accuracy of the $M_2$, which is the dominant factor out of the 11 major constituents, was 24.8% on average.

  • 페르시아(아라비아)만과 홍해를 포함하는 남위 10도이상의 아라비아해의 해양 역학을 이해하기 위한 첫단계로서 전해역을 1/6$^{\circ}$ (270$\times$246)의 해상도를 가진 조석모형에 의해 주분조의 조석체계를 산정하는 과업을 시작하였다. 이 아라비아해의 몰다이브공화국은 해면에 낮게 노출된 국가로서 지구 온난화에 따른 해면상승에 의해 민감한 지역이다. 아라비아해의 조석모형을 이용한 조석추정은 위성고도계자료(Topex$\times$Poseidon 및 ERS-1)로 부터 해면변위를 신뢰성있게 추출하기 위해 필수적인 과업으로 우선 M$_2$ 조석체계로서 부터 시작하여 주요 조석분조의 공간적인 분포를 산정하고저 한다. Tidal Sand Banks in the West Coast of Korea (우리나라 서해안의 조석사주)

  • The predictions of the local and regional sand transport of the offshore tidal sand banks tn the west coast of Korea, east of the Yellow San have been performed on the basis of diagrammatical method suggested by Kenyon et al(1981). There is general agreements between these predictions and the earlier predictions(Choi, 1983) of net regional sand transport paths from the numerical simulation of maximum bottom stress vector during the semidiurnal period due to m2 and m4 tides. Further detailed investigations are proposed for the study of Choongang Chontoe where the predicted net sand transport direction is to the dredged navigation channel.

Propagation of tidal wave and resulted tidal asymmetry upward tidal rivers (감조하천에서 조석 전파 및 조석비대칭)

  • In order to examine the characteristics of tidal wave from the estuary to upsteam of tidal river, tidal asymmetry was identified based on analysis of the harmonic constants of M2 and M4 tidal constituents in the domestic western coastal regions. As shallow water tide is greatly developed in the estuary, flood dominance in Han River and Keum River, and ebb dominance in Youngsan River are developed. These tidal asymmetries can be reconfirmed by analyzing the tidal current data. Unlike having reciprocating tidal current patterns in Keum and Youngsan estuaries, rotaing tidal current pattern is shown in the Han River estuary due to the complex topography and waterways around Ganghwa Island area. However, when residual current is removed, flood dominance is shown in consistency with the tide data. The tidal asymmetry in the estuary tends to intensify with the growth in shallow water tide as the tidal wave propagates to upstream of tidal river. Energy dissipation, in shallow Han River and Keum River classified as SD estuaries, is very large regarding bottom friction characteristics. On the other hand, the deep Youngsan River, classified as a WD estuary, shows less energy dissipation.
