Globose to clavate base-ball sized, pear shaped, fruiting bodies were found under the Himalayan cedar, Cedrus deodora at less fertile and poor sandy poor soil in the campus of Gyeongsang National University in Jinju, Korea. The fruiting body was at first, round to club-shaped, usually with a narrow, rooting base with yellowish rhizomorphs attached to it and lack a volva and a sterile base. The peridium of fruiting body was tough and crusty. The peridioles were white pea-like capsules in a blackish matrix. The color change to darker tints of brown at the top of the exterior peridium reflected the gradual ripening of the interior gleba and peridioles, which proceeded from the top downward to become a mass of spore dust, appearing as cinnamon brown at the apex of the vertical section. At around this stage, the peridium cracked open linearly, exposing the gleba with powdery spores mass released from overmatured peridioles. Spores were more or less round, warty or spiny, 10 to $12{\mu}m$; globose, cinnamon brown in powdery mass, with spines up to $2{\mu}m$ long. The thin peridium ruptured further in response to the disintegration of the peridioles, releasing the powdery spores, which proceeded until whole fruiting body disappeared leaving the dry spore dust coats in the vicinity. The absence of a capillitium is a distinctive characteristic that distinguishes the specimen from other puff-ball fungi and from most of earthballs. Based on the above characteristics, the specimen was identified as Poslithus tinctorius.

Two unrecorded alien plants, Melilotus officinalis (L.) Lam. and M. indicus (L.) All. (Leguminosae) were found in Korea. M. officinalis is native to Eurasia and widely distributed in agricultural regions throughout the world. M. indicus is native to Mediterranean and Southwestern Europe, and naturalized in temperate regions all over the world. These species are morphologically similar to M. suaveolens (Jeon-dong-ssa-ri). However, M. officinalis is distinguished from M. suaveolens by transverse nerved legumes, definite ovary stalks, and five to eight number of ovules in ovary. M. indicus is also distinguished from M. suaveolens by smaller size of flowers, broadly triangular calyx teeth, globose legumes, and minutely papillose seeds. The local name of M. officinalis and M. indicus were given as "Ju-reum-jeon-dong-ssa-ri" and "Jom-jeon-dong-ssa-ri" based on transverse nerved legumes and overall smaller size than M. suaveolens, respectively. The descriptions on morphological characters and photographs at the habitat of M. officinalis and M. indicus are provided.
One fungus was isolated from lesions on imported chinese cabbage leaves in process of quarantine inspection from China. The fungus was identified as Mycosphaerlla brassicicola, based on morphology of perithecia, asci, ascospore, and curtural characteristics. In Korea, this fungus has been quarantine fungus, and not yet report to occur. Perithecia of the fungus were globose, dark brown with apical papilate ostioles. The size was 90-100 ${\times}$ 130-135$\mu\textrm{m}$. Asci were bitunicate, 8-spored and 38-43 ${\times}$ 15-l9$\mu\textrm{m}$. Ascospore were irregularly biseriate, hyaline, cylindrical, 2-celled, and rounded at the ends. Optium growth temperature of the fungus was at 20$^{\circ}C$ on PDA but did rarely grow over 24$^{\circ}C$. Colony on PDA was of black aerial mycelia.
A black leg disease in wasabi occurred, showed black spots on the leaves, changed a rhizome color to black by invading the vascular bundles of stem and root, thus lowered the quality of the rhizome. The mycelium of the pathogen was yellow at first and then turned to dark yellow on oat meal agar medium. The pycnidium was globose or subglobose, dark brown in color, and 44~120$\times$28~170 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size and had one or two ostioles on the upper part. The pycnidiospores are single-celled, hyaline, and 4~6$\times$1.2~2.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. The causal pathogen was identified as Phoma wasabiae. The black leg disease of wasabi occurred within the range of 28 to 32% at Chonbuk province in 1994~1995. The disease was appeared from April to October and severe in June and July. The black leg caused by P. wasabiae was first described in Korea.
The trichomes on leaves of three species of Mentha such as M. spicata, M. suaveolens, and M. piperita var were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Simple non-glandular trichomes and peltate glandular trichomes were distinctively occurred on these leaves. In M. spicata, short and sharp non-glandular trichomes were dominantly appeared on adaxial surface, whereas capitate glandular trichomes were commonly localized on abaxial surface. In M. suaveolens, non-glandular trichomes were identified with simple unbranched and branched. Unbranched trichomes which were sharp and pointed in shape occurred on adaxial surface, however, branched and v-shaped trichomes appeared abundantly on abaxial surface. Peltate trichomes consisted of a large eight-celled head. Small capitates trichomes consisted of a cylindrical head with an one-celled uniseriate stalk. In M. piperita var, single non-glandular trichomes and peltate trichomes were present on adaxial surface. Small capitate trichomes consisted of a globose unicellular head with a two- or three-celled uniseriate stalk. Peltate trichomes were distinctly present on abaxial surface, whereas they were not observed on adaxial surface. The trichomes were less dense in this species. Peltate trichomes consisted of a large eight-celled head, with an enlarged secretory cavity, attached to an one-celled short stalk.
Shoot blight of suckers of common lilac plants (Syringa vulgaris) was found in an apartment garden in Daegu, Korea. The causal organism was a species of Phytophthora, which was homothallic with paragynous antheridium. Oogonia were globose and measured 21.5-34.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ with an average of 29.7$\pm$3.2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter. Oospores in oogonia were round, light orange brown when mature, mostly plerotic, and measured an average of 25.6$\pm$3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter. Antheridia were ovoid and around 11.7$\times$7.8 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Sporangia seldom formed on agar media but formed abundantly in water. Sporangia that formed in water were semipapillate, ovoid obpyriform, non-caducous, and 23.4-66.3$\times$17.6-37.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in dimension with I/b ratio of 1.46. The causal organism was identified as Phytophthora citricola Sawada on the basis of morphological characteristics. This is the first report of shoot blight caused by P. citricola Sawada in lilac suckers in Korea.
Malassezia is the most abundant genus in the fungal microflora found on human skin, and it is associated with various skin diseases. Among the 18 different species of Malassezia that have been identified to date, M. restricta and M. globosa are the most predominant fungal species found on human skin. Several studies have suggested a possible link between Malassezia and skin disorders. However, our knowledge on the physiology and pathogenesis of Malassezia in human body is still limited. Malassezia is unable to synthesize fatty acids; hence, it uptakes external fatty acids as a nutrient source for survival, a characteristic compensated by the secretion of lipases and degradation of sebum to produce and uptake external fatty acids. Although it has been reported that the activity of secreted lipases may contribute to pathogenesis of Malassezia, majority of the data were indirect evidences; therefore, enzymes' role in the pathogenesis of Malassezia infections is still largely unknown. This review focuses on the recent advances on Malassezia in the context of an emerging interest for lipases and summarizes the existing knowledge on Malassezia, diseases associated with the fungus, and the role of the reported lipases in its physiology and pathogenesis.
A sclerotinia rot of Leonurus sibiricus caused by Sclerotinia sclerotio겨m occurred severely in farmer's fields at Seosang-myon, Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, Korea in 2001. The typical symptoms of the disease were that leaves, stems or collar of the infected plants at first became darker green and then watery soft rotted, and white fluffy mycelia formed on the lesion developed into black sclerotia later, Sclerotia on the plant and PDA medium were globose to cylindrical or irregular in shape, and 0.8~10.3$\times$0.8~6.4 m in size. Aphothecia with numerous asci were cup-shape, and 0.6~1.2 cm in diameter, Asci with 8 spores were cylindrical, and 87~246$\times$4.6~21.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Ascospores of one cell were hyaline, ellipsoid to ovoid in shape, and 10.2~14.6$\times$4.7~7.2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. The range of temperature for mycelial growth was from 5 to 3$0^{\circ}C$, and the optimum was $25^{\circ}C$. This is the first report on the sclerotinia rot of L. sibiricus caused by Sclerotinia sclerotioum in Korea.

Leaf blight of kudzu ( Pueraria lobata ) was found in Jeonbuk province in 2002. The main symptoms appeared as leaf blight and showed yellowing and wilting. The causal pathogen of the leaf blight was isolated from symptomed kudzu leaf and produced white to cream, usually floccose mycelium. It readily formed reddish orange mycelium on PDA. It produced typical microconidia and macroconidia. The microconidia were the reniform. The macroconidia were wide, slightly curved, usually 3 to 4 septate and size was 45 ∼ 85 ${\times}$ 5 ∼ l0$\mu\textrm{m}$. The pathogen produced chlamydospore singly on short hyphal branches within 2 to 3 weeks, which was hyaline, globose, and smooth walled. The pathogen was, therefore, identified as Fusarium solani based on cultural and morphological characters. This is the first report on the leaf blight of kudzu caused by Fusarium solani in Korea.
