  • The barrel distortion makes serious problems in a wide-angle camera employing a lens of a short focal length. This paper presents a low-complexity hardware architecture for a real-time barrel distortion corrector and its implementation. In the proposed barrel distortion corrector, the conventional algorithm is modified so that the correction is performed incrementally, which results in the reduction of the number of required hardware modules for the distortion correction. The proposed barrel distortion corrector has a pipelined architecture so as to achieve a high-throughput correction. The correction rate is 74.86 frames per sec at the operating frequency of 314MHz in a $0.11{\mu}m$ CMOS process, where the frame size is $2048{\times}2048$. The proposed barrel distortion corrector is implemented with 14.3K logic gates.

  • A remote sensing technique to identify trajectories of breaking waves in the surf zone using oblique digital nearshore videos is proposed. The noise arising from white foam induced by wave breaking has hindered accurate remote sensing of wave properties in the surf zone. For this reason, this paper focuses on image processing to remove the noise and wave trajectory identification essential for wave property estimation. The nearshore video imagery sampled at 3 Hz are used, covering length scale(100 m). Original image sequences are processed through image frame differencing and directional low-pass image filtering to remove the noise characterized by high frequencies in the video imagery. The extraction of individual wave crest features is conducted using a Radon transform-based line detection algorithm in the processed cross-shore image timestacks having a two-dimensional space-time domain. The number of valid wave crest trajectories identified corresponds to about 2/3 of waves recorded by the in-situ sensors.

  • Recently the interest in coast area has been increased in the view of management and usage of national territory. Rapid coastal development has caused directly or indirectly coastline changes which may make environmental problems or threaten the nearby residents' livelihood. CORONA was one of the US satellite reconnaissance programs, and it's imagery provides informations about past coastline with high resolution. In this study, we applied rigorous geo-referencing algorithm to CORONA imagery in order to generate the mosaic image of the East coast area of 1969 with 20m accuracy. This old era CORONA mosaic image was compared with SPOT image of 2005, and the coastline changes were analyzed. We were able to ascertain considerable erosion and accumulation in some parts of study area. erosion area which is calculated from imagery is $0.32\;km^2$ from Kosung to Kangnung. Results of coastline change detection can provide useful information for related studies.

  • The 800-kW PM (permanent magnet) synchronous generator is developed as a wind power generator. The matching converter is designed to control the torque and power depending on the wind speed regime. The generator starts to generate the power at the speed of 9 rpm and the rated output is generated at the speed of 25 rpm. The rated output power of an inverter is 750 kW when the PM synchronous generator is delivering 800 kW to the inverter. The inverter is specially designed to perform the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) at the low wind speed regime that is typical wind environment in Korea. The inverter test was done with a 2 MW M-G system at KERI (Korea Electric Research Institute). The M-G set has a 2 MW motor driver and a 38:1 gear to match the speed between the motor and the PM generator. The torque simulating the wind is applied to the PM generator by a DC motor. The test results show the inverter efficiency of $94.3\%$ at the rated power generating condition. The measured values show that the MPPT algorithm is working well. Overall reliability will be verified through the long-term site test.

  • Many studies have been carried out to produce 3D features in the size range between $10{\mu}m\~10,000{\mu}m$, called Meso-scale. If these miniaturized systems have high relative accuracy and good volumetric utilization, it is possible to manufacture more complex and accurate shapes with various materials as well as there are advantages of reducing energy, space and resources. Due to imperfect components and misalignment in assembly, it is necessary to assess the accuracy of the miniaturized system itself to obtain high relative accuracy. Laser interferometers are widely used to measure geometric errors called as quasi-static errors. For miniaturized system, however, it is difficult to install the required accessories such as optics and the measuring range is limited because of the size of the system and also this method is very expensive. Moreover, it is impossible to measure each error component simultaneously. A new system to measure simultaneously multiple geometric errors is proposed using capacitance sensors. Each error was measured using capacitance sensors and a measurement algorithm was mathematically derived. The experiments show that the proposed measurement system can be used effectively to assess the accuracy of miniaturized system at a low cost.

  • Monitoring the global Gross Primary Pproduction (GPP) is relevant to understanding the global carbon cycle and evaluating the effects of interannual climate variation on food and fiber production. GPP, the flux of carbon into ecosystems via photosynthetic assimilation, is an important variable in the global carbon cycle and a key process in land surface-atmosphere interactions. The Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is one of the primary global monitoring sensors. MODIS GPP has some of the problems that have been proven in several studies. Therefore this study was to solve the regional mismatch that occurs when using the MODIS GPP global product over Korea. To solve this problem, we estimated each of the GPP component variables separately to improve the GPP estimates. We compared our GPP estimates with validation GPP data to assess their accuracy. For all sites, the correlation was close with high significance ($R^2=0.8164$, $RMSE=0.6126g{\cdot}C{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, $bias=-0.0271g{\cdot}C{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$). We also compared our results to those of other models. The component variables tended to be either over- or under-estimated when compared to those in other studies over the Korean peninsula, although the estimated GPP was better. The results of this study will likely improve carbon cycle modeling by capturing finer patterns with an integrated method of remote sensing.

  • In this paper, a gain-adapted speech recognition method in noise is developed in the time domain. Noise is assumed to be colored. To cope with the notable nonstationary nature of speech signals such as fricative, glides, liquids, and transition region between phones, the nonstationary autoregressive (NAR) hidden Markov model (HMM) is used. The nonstationary AR process is represented by using polynomial functions with a linear combination of M known basis functions. When only noisy signals are available, the estimation problem of noise inevitably arises. By using multiple Kalman filters, the estimation of noise model and gain contour of speech is performed. Noise estimation of the proposed method can eliminate noise from noisy speech to get an enhanced speech signal. Compared to the conventional ARHMM with noise estimation, our proposed NAR-HMM with noise estimation improves the recognition performance about 2-3%.

  • Since the application of chemicals in confined spaces under the canopy of an orchard is hazardous work, it is needed to develop an autonomous guidance system for an orchard sprayer. The autonomous guidance system developed in this research could steer the vehicle by tracking an overhead guidance rail, which was installed on an existing frame structure. The autonomous guidance system consisted of an 80196 kc microprocessor, an inclinometer, two interface circuits of actuators for steering and ground speed control, and a fuzzy control algorithm. In addition, overhead guidance rails for both straight and curved paths were devised, and a trolley was designed to move smoothly along the overhead guidance rails. Evaluation tests showed that the experimental vehicle could travel along the desired path at a ground speed of 30 $\sim$ 50 cm/s with a RMS error of 5 cm and maximum deviation of less than 12 cm. Even when the vehicle started with an initial offset or a deflected heading angle, it could move quickly to track the desired path after traveling 2 $\sim$ 3 m. The vehicle could also complete turns with a curvature of 1 m. However, at a ground speed of 50 cm/s, the vehicle tended to over-steer, resulting in a zigzag motion along the straight path, and tended to turn outward from the projected line of the guidance rail.

  • This paper describes a multi-standard LDPC decoder which supports 19 block lengths(576~2304) and 6 code rates(1/2, 2/3A, 2/3B, 3/4A, 3/4B, 5/6) of IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX standard and 3 block lengths(648, 1296, 1944) and 4 code rates(1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6) of IEEE 802.11n WLAN standard. To minimize hardware complexity, it adopts a block-serial (partially parallel) architecture based on the layered decoding scheme. A DFU(decoding function unit) based on sign-magnitude arithmetic is used for hardware reduction. The designed LDPC decoder is verified by FPGA implementation, and synthesized with a 0.13-${\mu}m$ CMOS cell library. It has 312,000 gates and 70,000 bits RAM. The estimated throughput is about 79~210 Mbps at 100 MHz@1.8v.

  • In the recent year, along with the rapid development of LED technology, many applications using LEDs have been researched and indoor positioning is one of them. In particular, previous indoor positioning systems based on visible light communication combine triangulation manner such as AoA, ToA TDoA. But most of them needs transmitting unique ID of each LED panel. In this paper, we propose an non LED-ID based indoor positioning system in which the visible light radiated from LEDs is used to locate the position of receiver. Compared to current indoor positioning systems using LED light, our system has the advantages of simple implementation, low cost and high accuracy. Through the computer simulation, our system can achieve a high estimation accuracy of 3.6cm in average in the $5{\times}5{\times}3m^3$ room.
