  • The surface geometry of o-diiodobenzene (ODIB) adsorbed on silver colloid surfaces has been studied. This molecule is standing up on 1 day old colloid surfaces, while it is lying down or standing up on 1 month old colloid surfaces. The surface geometry of ODIB is affected by the atomic scale surface roughness of colloid used. The SERS intensity of ODIB for lying down geometry is much more strong than that for standing up. This may be mainly due to that the distance from surface to the center of the molecule in lying down geometry is shorter than that in standing up.

  • Lying is nuisance to all, and all liars knows it is nuisance but still keep on lying. Sometime people are in confusion how to escape from or how to detect the liar when they lie. In this research we are aiming to establish a dynamic platform to identify liar by using video analysis especially by calculating the ratio of changes in their appearance when they lie. The platform will be developed using a machine learning algorithm along with the dynamic classifier to classify the liar. For the experimental analysis the dataset to be processed in two dimensions (people lying and people tell truth). Both parameter of facial appearance will be stored for future identification. Similarly, there will be standard parameter to be built for true speaker and liar. We hope this standard parameter will be able to diagnosed a liar without a pre-captured data.

  • The mathematical proof for establishing some new inequalities involving arithmetic, geometric, harmonic means for the arguments lying on the paths of triangular wave function (linear) and new parabolic function (curved) over the interval (0, 1) are discussed. The results representing an extension as well as strengthening of Ky Fan Type inequalities.

Comparison of Abdominal Oblique Muscle Activity During Leg Raising in Hook-lying Position According to Surface Conditions (Hook-lying 자세에서 한쪽 다리 들기시 지지면의 안정성에 따른 복사근의 근활성도 비교)

  • To improve trunk stability, various exercise protocols were introduced into the clinical field. Trunk and lumbar stability exercises on unstable surfaces are especially recommended to improve lumbar stability. The purpose of this study was to compare abdominal oblique muscle activity during leg raising in hook-lying position among 3 different type of surface conditions (on floor (F), vestibular board (VB), and foam roll (FR)). Sixteen able-bodied volunteers, who had no medical history of lower extremity or lumbar spine disease, were recruited for this study. Surface electromyography (EMG) activity was recorded from the internal and external oblique muscles of both sides. The normalized EMG activity was compared using a one-way repeated ANOVA. The results showed that the EMG activities of the internal oblique and external oblique of the lifted leg side during straight leg raising significantly increased under the FR condition when compared to the F condition. There was no significant difference of the EMG activity in abdominal oblique muscles between the VB and the FR conditions. The EMG activity of the internal oblique of supported leg side during the straight leg raising was significantly greater under the FR condition than the VB and F conditions (p<.05). The composition ratio of EMG activity of internal oblique muscles during straight leg raising was significantly increased under the FR condition. Therefore, straight leg raising exercise on foam roll in hook lying position could be beneficial to improve trunk and lumbar stability.

Effects of Lumbar Stabilization Using Pressure Biofeedback Unit During Hip Abduction in Side-Lying in Patients With Low Back Pain

  • Background: Lumbar stabilization (LS) improve the thickness of the quadratus lumborum (QL) muscle and muscle activity of the gluteus medius (GM) muscle during hip abduction in a side-lying position in patients with low back pain (LBP). Objects: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of LS on muscle thickness of QL and muscle activity of GM during hip abduction in side-lying in patients with LBP. Methods: The study included 32 patients with LBP, who were randomly divided into the control group and experimental group, each with 16 patients. All subjects performed $35^{\circ}$ preferred hip abduction (control group) and $35^{\circ}$ hip abduction with LS (experimental group) during side-lying. An ultrasonography and a surface electromyography were used to measure the thickness of the QL muscle, and the muscle activities of the GM muscle respectively. Independent t-test was used to compare the muscle thickness of the QL and the muscle activity of the GM muscle, respectively. Results: Anterio-posterior diameter in the muscle thickness of QL muscle was decreased significantly in hip abduction with LS more than in preferred hip abduction (p<.001), but medio-lateral diameter in the muscle thickness of QL muscle was not significantly different between in preferred hip abduction and in hip abduction with LS (p=.06). The muscle activity of GM was increased significantly in hip abduction with LS more than in preferred hip abduction (p<.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that hip abduction with LS could be recommended as a hip abduction for LS and a prevention unwanted compensatory pelvic lateral tilting movement.

Influence of Hip Abduction Velocity and Position on the Onset Times of Gluteus Medius and Tensor Fascia Latae Relative to Quadratus Lumborum in Healthy Subject: A Pilot Study

  • PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of hip abduction velocity and position change on the relative onset times of the gluteus medius, the tensor fascia latae, and the quadratus lumborum in healthy subjects. METHODS: For this study, 15 healthy young adults were recruited. The subjects were asked to move their hip joints up to 35 degrees of abduction at a speed of $70^{\circ}/sec$ and $17.5^{\circ}/sec$ in the supine and side-lying positions. Electromyography data was collected for the gluteus medius, tensor fascia latae, and quadratus lumborum to determine the onset times. RESULTS: There were significant differences between the fast speed ($70^{\circ}/sec$) and the slow speed ($17.5^{\circ}/sec$) in hip abduction in a supine position and in a side-lying position, relatively. The onset time of the gluteus medius was faster than that of the tensor fascia latae and the quadratus lumborum in the side-lying position at the speed of $70^{\circ}/sec$ and $17.5^{\circ}/sec$. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study indicated that hip abduction in a side-lying position is an effective method to recruit the gluteus medius earlier than the tensor fascia latae and the quadratus lumborum. Thus, the exercise position is considered necessory in the purpose of rehabilitation for gluteus medius muscle strengthening program.

Effect of Contralateral Hip Adduction on Muscle Thicknesses of Lumbar Stabilizers and Pelvic Lateral Tilting During Hip Abduction in Side-lying (옆으로 누운 자세에서 고관절 외전시 반대 측 고관절 내전이 요추안정화 근육 두께와 골반 외측 경사에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of contralateral hip adduction (CHA) on thickness of lumbar stabilizers during hip abduction in side-lying. Twenty healthy subjects without back pain were recruited for this study. The thickness of transverse abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO) and quadratus lumborum (QL) were measured by ultrasonography. Pelvic lateral tilting motion was measured using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. Measurements were performed at rest position (RP), $35^{\circ}$preferred hip abduction (PHA) and $35^{\circ}$abduction with $10^{\circ}$contralateral hip adduction (CHA) in side-lying at the end of expiration. During the measurements, subjects were asked to maintain steady trunk alignment without hand support. Thickness of TrA and IO was significantly greater in CHA than in PHA and RP conditions. There was no significant difference in thickness of TrA and IO between PHA and RP conditions. Medio-lateral (M-L) thickness of QL was not significant between PHA and CHA conditions. Anterio-posterior (A-P) thickness of QL in PHA and CHA significantly decreased compared to RP condition. Angle of pelvic lateral tilting was significantly decreased in CHA compared to PHA condition. In conclusion, CHA can be recommended for increasing trunk stability without compensatory pelvic motion during hip abduction exercise in side-lying.

Biomechanical Analysis of Sitting Up from a Lying Posture in Stroke Patients (뇌졸중 환자의 누운 자세에서 앉기 동작의 생체 역학적 분석)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to suggest an effective method of daily life movement training for stroke patients by comparison and analysis of the biomechanic characteristics of sitting up from a lying posture in stroke patients and healthy elderly participants. Methods: Fifteen stroke patients and 15 age-matched elderly participants were included in the study. The movement of sitting up from a lying posture was divided into three stages, and the differences in muscle activity in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), and rectus femoris (RF) during the movement were analyzed. Results: Subjects in the experimental group showed slower speed than those in the control group. In the neck joint, the change of angle in movement showed a larger decrease at all stages in the experimental group than in the control group; the movement also decreased in stages I and II in the upper trunk joint. The movement also showed a statistically significant decrease in stage II in the lower trunk, pelvic, and hip joints. The SCM showed higher activity in the control group than in the experimental group, showing a statistically significant difference; the RA showed high activity in the experimental group. The RF showed higher activity in the control group than in the experimental group, showing a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: From the results obtained above, increasing movements in the neck, pelvic, and hip joints and strengthening of lower body muscles are required in order to improve the ability for getting up from a lying posture in stroke patients.

Grazing Behaviour of Jersey and Guernsey Heifers in Sub-Humid Tropical Conditions of Kenya

  • The behaviour of 5 Jersey and 5 Guernsey heifers, grazing on natural vegetation in a sub-humid tropical environment in Kenya, was studied during the dry (January and February) and wet (April and May) seasons in 1999. The heifers grazed for 12 hours daily in both seasons. Observations on feeding, standing, lying and ruminating were done chronometrically, at five-minute intervals, between 0600 and 1800 h. During the dry season, the average feeding, standing, lying and ruminating times per 12 h period for Jerseys was 8.0, 3.13, 0.87, and 1.40 respectively, while those for Guernseys were 8.6, 3.26, 0.4, and 1.35 respectively. In the wet (green) season, the mean feeding, standing, lying and ruminating times for Jerseys were found to be 7.54, 3.07, 1.39, and 1.27 respectively, and for Guernseys were 8.42, 3.10, 0.48, and 0.44 respectively. In both seasons Guernseys spent more time feeding (p<0.05) in comparison with the Jerseys. It was also observed that lying occurred more often in Jerseys than the Guernseys (p<0.05) in both seasons. During the wet season, Jerseys ruminated longer (p<0.05) than the Guernseys. The health status of the animals was determined by examining the respiratory frequency, heart rate, rectal temperature, haemoglobin erythrocytes and leucocytes of the experimental animals. All the clinical and physiological parameters were within the normal physiological range of healthy cattle. It was concluded that there are differences in grazing behaviour between Jerseys and Guernseys in the sub-humid tropical environment of Kenya and Jerseys seem to be more adapted to the tropical climatic conditions.
