  • The microorganism for ammonia gas removal was isolated from composting product. This was identified as Brevundimonas diminuta by morphological, biochemical characteristics study and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Optimal incubation temperature for cell growth and oxidizing ability of $NH_4-N$ was $30^{\circ}C$ and optimal initial pH was 7. Glucose affected the growth of cell and the removal of $NH4^+$. The growth rate of the isolates were increased when grown in the presence of 0.05-1%(w/v) glucose in the selective medium and lurker increases in glucose concentration to 2% caused significant decreases in the cell growth and oxidizing ability of $NH4^+$.

  • Due to increasing marine pollution there is a great possibility that seaweed is contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). To investigate the effect of processing on PAM removal from Porphyra tenera (laver) contaminated PAH, laver was contaminated with fluoranthene known to have a strong photoinduced toxicity, followed by washings and drying, which are usual processes for dried laver preparation. Sample at each step was collected and its toxicity was evaluated using cultured animal cells as well as analyzing PAH contents. Fluoranthene level in laver was significantly lowered by sequential washings with sea water and distilled water, but not by drying. Fluoranthene content in raw laver right after contamination was 221 ppm and decreased to 130 ppm by washings with seawater plus distilled water while its level was not lurker lowered by drying process. Cytotoxicity and photoinduced cytotoxicity in mammalian cells were significantly elevated in laver extracts containing fluoranthene. Cellular arylhydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH), one of the biomarkers for cellular accumulation of PAH, was greatly induced by laver extract contaminated with fluoranthene. These results suggest that photoinduced toxicity and AHH activity can be used to monitor contamination of seafood by PAHs. Fluoranthene accumulated in laver was efficiently removed by sequential washings with seawater and tap water for 24 hrs and 12 hrs, respectively.

  • One faces four major developmental tasks to achieve in young adulthood, ages between 20 and 40 : intimacy, vocation, marriage and child-rearing. Intimacy is the capacity to commit oneself to concrete affiliations and partnerships and to develop the ethical strength to abide by such commitments, even though they call for significant sacrifices and compromises. Through vocation and marriage young adults become united to networks of persons, find tasks that demand involvement, and gain roles into which they fit and are fitted and which help define their identities. An occupation represents much more than a set of skills and functions : it means a way of life. The extent of vocational choice increases with educational level, and the unconscious factors are frequency the decisive element. The vocational choice stare with fantasy choices in childhood, passes through tentative choices in adolescence, realistic choices in college days, and crystallized choices in post-college days, and finally ends up to the choice of specification. Along with the hazards and the need for realignment of personality functioning, the marriage brings with it new opportunities for self-fulfillment and completion. Motives other than a romantic love gain more importance in the decision to marry and in the choice of a partner. The impulsions to marry are sexual gratification, the desire to propagate, narcissistic gratification, and a need of interdependence. Many factors such as oedipal wishes, sexuality and sexual attractions, socio-economic classes, and geography involve in selection of marriage partner. There are also various motivations to marry a romantic love, the desire for a home of one's own, sexual attractions, the wish for security and a shelter, and the wish for children. The hostile marriage, the marriage on the rebound, the marriage rooted in rescue fantasies, and sado-masochistic marriage are the examples of pathological marriages. A successful marriage will usually both Lead to and require a marked reorganization of the personality structure of each partner that will influence the lurker personality development of each. Many marital problems are largely dependent upon the personality characteristics of one partner which might well create difficulties no manor who was the spouse.

  • Background and Objectives : Quality of life(QOL) is a construct representing physical, mental and social well-being. QOL has been used as a device for measuring the severity of health-related condition and treatment outcomes. As the social welfare system develops, the attention to QOL increases as well. The aims of this study was to examine whether the patients with voice disorder perceived significantly more the effects of voice disorder on QOL than nonpatient group did and if any, identify the sociodemographic risk factors influencing QOL of patients. Materials and Methods : This study asked 113 adults with voice disorders who were enrolled in Voice Clinic in the Department of Otolaryngology, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital between lune 1998 and January 1999 and 111 nonpatients to complete a questionnaire designed to elicit information about the effete of voice disorders on quality of lift. The questionnaire included items concerning sociodemographic areas, voice symptoms, job, effects of voice disorders on QOL domains(work, social, psychological, physical, and communication areas), potential risk factors to exposures, familial and medical history of voice disorders. Results : The sociodemographic characteristics of the patient group are as follows : (1) 75.2% of total patient group were female and the rest were male. (2) Age of total patient group ranged from 20 to 65 years. Hoarseness was the most commonly reported complaints, followed by complaints of high note difficulties during singing and voice fatigue. The patient group perceived effects of voice disorders on the areas of work, social, psychological, physical and communication more adversely than the comparison group did (p<0.05). QOL impairments were evaluated as a function of age, gender, education, and income, controlling other independent effects. The results were that (1) age was significantly associated with work problems and (2) gender and income were significantly associated with psychological problems. Conclusions : The findings indicated that the patients with voice disorders would perceive markedly adverse effect on all QOL domains, that is, work, social, psychological, physical, communicational areas. Therefore, the results of study suggest that lurker investigations about the nature of voice disorders, the prevention, treatment, and coping strategies are needed in the future.

  • To investigate the effect of sea tangle on immune function in normal and diabetic states, 10-week old ICR mice were feed control(C) and sea tangle(5) diets containing 5%(w/w) cellulose and 13.6%(w/w) dry sea tangle for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, three quarters of mice(CD and SD) were made diabetic by intramuscular injection of streptozotocin(150mg/kg bw). On the 4th day after diabetes was apparent by urinary glucose, one third of diabetic mire(CDG and SDG) were treated with glipizide(20mg/kg bw) and the other third(CDM and SDM) with metformin (500mg/kg bw) orally. Spleen weights of diabetic mice with no hypoglycemic drug treatment appeared to be higher in the sea tangle group(SD) than in control(CD), but were not different when drugs were administered. Data on splenocyte proliferation stimulated by lipopolysaccaride from Salmonella abortus equi(0.l$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) showed that sea tangle increased mitogen response in normal mice(C group vs S group) and appeared to have the same effect in diabetic mice with or without drug treatment. Splenocyte proliferation induced by concanavalin A(0.1$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) also showed similar results, although there were not statistically significant. Concentration of interleukin-2(IL-2) released from splenocytes of the S group seemed higher than from the C group, but the IL-2 concentrations were not different among six diabetic groups. Results of fatty acid compositions of splenocyte phospholipids showed that diabetes reduced arachidonic acid/linoleic acid ratios and that sea tangle intake and glipizide treatments increased contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids. It is concluded that dietary sea tangle has a positive effect on splenocyte proliferation under normal condition and could have the same effect under diabetic conditions. IL-2 appears to be one of factors mediating the effect but involvement of membrane fatty arid changes and other unknown factors needs lurker Investigation. (Korean J Nutrition 31(6) : 973-980, 1998)

  • The purpose of this study was to collect basic data on the prevention of and education about diabetes mellitus for the nutritional management of a diabetes mellitus risk group. The study which took place in Kangbukgu, Seoul, involved a diabetes mellitus risk group (DMR $\geq$ 110 mg/dL, 61), of males and females, aged 36 to 68 years, and a group of healthy people as a control group ( < 110 mg/dL, 183), using luting blood sugar (FBS) levels. The proportion of people in the abnormal range was higher in the DMR than that of control group for total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (HDL-C), total protein, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and creatinine. Particularly with respect to serum protein the proportion in the DMR in abnormal range (p < 0.05) was significantly higher than that of the control group. The proportion in the DMR with a family history of disease was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.01). Using body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR) and relative body weight (RBW), the obesity indices in the DMR was higher than that of the control group. Comparing the DMR and the control group with respect to dietary habits, it seems that the DMR had more undesirable dietary habits than the control group. When the intake of each nutrient for the DMR and the control group was compared to the Korean recommended dietary allowances (RDA), the proportion of excess intake and deficient intake in the DMR was higher than that of the control group. The DMR showed a greater undesirable dietary intake pattern as compared to that of the control group, based on the RDA. With respect to the dietary diversity score (DDS) and the mean adequacy ratio (MAR) for quality estimation of the overall flood intake, the DMR showed a feater undesirable pattern than the control group. According to the above results, the DMR tended to have more undesirable eating habits when compared to the control group. Therefore, to provide a more efficient nutritional education program for the DMR we must conduct lurker studies on eating habits, so as to provide systematic nutritional management based on theme differences between the DMR and the control group.

  • Online communities are getting more popular with the development of information technology. It is essential that community members participate actively and share their contents or opinions continuously for the success and growth of online communities. However, it is revealed that most of members just take the role of passive observer. They are lurking community information and contents without any contribution. In this sense, this study focuses on explore lurking behavior of online community members. This study investigates the effect of the characteristics of online community, community members, and personal traits on user's lurking intention. Member familiarity and community identity have a strong positive effect on de-lurking intention, while the perception of usefulness and ease of use for communities and member expertise have a negative effect on de-lurking intention. Interestingly, users with a low level of self-esteem have higher level of motivation of participation than those with a high level of self-esteem. Finally, this study proposes several strategies to enhance information and contents sharing in online communities.

  • The vertical soil pressure developed in the granular layer of asphalt pavement system is influenced by various factors, including the wheel load magnitude, the loading speed, and asphalt pavement temperature. This research observed the distribution of vertical soil pressure in pavement supporting layer by investigating measured data from soil pressure gage in the KHC Test Road. The existing specification of subbase and subgrade compaction was also evaluated with measured vertical pressure. The finite element analysis was conducted to verify the accuracy of results with measured data because it can maximize research capacity without significant field test. The test data was collected from A5, A7, A14, and A15 test sections at August, September, and November 2004 and August 2005. Those test sections and test data were selected because they had best quality. The size of influence area was evaluated and the vertical pressure variation was investigated with respect to load level, load speed, and pavement temperature. The lower speed, higher load level, and higher pavement temperature increased the vertical pressure and reduced the area of influence. The finite element result showed the similar trend of vertical pressure variation in comparison with measured data. The specification of compaction quality for subbase and subgrade is higher than the level of vertical pressure measured with truck load so that it should be lurker investigated.
