  • A systematic study of the role of transfer films on friction properties was performed with various temperatures in the brake system. An NAO friction material specimens containing 9 ingredients were tested using a pad-on-disk type friction tester A new method of measuring the transfer film thickness was developed by considering the electrical resistance of the transfer film using a 4-point probe technique. The properties of transfer film such as surface morphology and film distribution vaied according to the relative amount of graphite and magnesium oxide. By using SEM, it was possible to obtain information about the chemical composition of the transfer film. Results showed that there detected a threshold value of the relative amount of a two active materials to maintain a certiain thickness of a transfer film. Results also showed that formation of friction layer generated on the friction surface was strongly affected by chemical action of two ingredients during sliding due to chemical reaction of solid lubricants at different interface temperature. The results suggested that no apparent relationship between transfer film thickness and the average friction coefficient was founded and friction characteristics were affected more by the property of the solid lubricant and abrasive in the material.

  • Active magnetic bearing has been adopted to support the rotor by electomagnetic force without mechanical contact and lubrication process. A property of the control system for magnetic bearing is improved in accordance with making higher system gain. If the control system has integral part, an excessive overshoot response is shown by making higher integral gain. Therefore, this paper suggests a PID control system in order to eliminate the overshoot at the first stage and improve response characteristics to an impact disturbance at the status of levitation. The control gain was obtained by LQR design method which has the structure of I-PD control system in the state space. The PID control system containing prefilter has the same structure as the I-PD control system. Therefore, the PID control system adopted is able to be tuned by LQR design method. Finally, this paper shows the effect of the prefilter on the active magnetic bearing system through response experiments for levitation responses.

  • The machinability of cast iron is closely related to its microstructural property. In this study, the effect of graphite mophology and matrix microstructure on machinability in several commercial cast irons(GC 25, GCD 45, GCD 50, GCD 70, GCD HSMo, GCMP) was investigated. To estimate the machinability, turning test was carried out under conditions of spindle speed 80m/min, depth of cut 0.25mm, feed 0.16mm/rev and cutting distance 1 km. Thrust force in turning test decreases in the order of GCMP, GCD 70, GCD 50, GC 25, GCD 45 and GCD HSMo. i.e. machinability increases in this order. The superior machinability of GC 25 is caused by flake type graphite which acts as chip braker and provides lubrication during machining. Consequently, soft ferritic cast irons exhibit superior machinability compared with pearlitic cast irons.

  • A deoxidized low-phosphorous (DLP) copper was processed by accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) for ultra grain refinement and high strengthening. Two copper sheets 1 mm thick, 30 mm wide and 300 mm long are first degreased and wire-brushed for sound bonding. The sheets are then stacked to each other, and roll-bonded by about 50% reduction rolling without lubrication at ambient temperature. The bonded sheet is then cut to the two pieces of same dimensions and the same procedure was repeated to the sheets up to eight cycles (${\varepsilon}{\sim}6.3$). TEM observation revealed that ultrafine grains were developed after the 4th cycle, and their size decreased at higher cycles. Tensile strength of the copper increased with the equivalent strain, and it reached 547 MPa which was 3 times higher than that of the initial material. It is concluded that the ARB process is an effective method for high strengthening of the DLP copper.

  • WC-CrC-Ni coatings were prepared by nine processes of the Taguchi program with three levels for the four spray parameters: spray distance, flow rates of hydrogen and oxygen, and powder feed rate. The optimal coating process (OCP) was oxygen flow rate of 38 FMR, hydrogen flow rate of 53 FMR, powder feed rate of 25 g/min, and spray distance of 7 inches. Hardness of 1150 Hv and porosity of 1.2 %, were obtained by OCP; these are better results compared with the highest 1033 Hv and the lowest 1.5 % porosity obtained by nine processes of the Taguchi program. Friction coefficient of the WC-CrC-Ni coating decreased from $0.36{\pm}0.07$ at $25^{\circ}C$ to $0.23{\pm}0.07$ at $450^{\circ}C$. These values were smaller than those of the EHC (electrolytic hard chrome) plating at both temperatures due to lubrication from the oxide debris. The wear trace and wear depth of the coating are smaller than those of the EHC at both temperatures. Pitting was not found in the WC-CrC-Ni coating sample, while it did appear in the EHC sample.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the case study of tribological failure analysis on the gear damages, oil leakage, and sealant sealing in a manual transmission of front engine and front wheel drive vehicle. The manual transmission is to change the speed range and direction of the engines depending on the driving conditions by friction driving forces with input and output gear system. The material property and surface roughness of the gears are strongly related to the gear noise and micro-vibration, oil leakage and wear, which may decrease the real contact area of the gear and the strength of the oil film thickness between the driving gear and driven one. The O-ring damage of speedometer driven gear and bad sealant sealing of oil pan may produce oil leakage through the contact surfaces, which cause the oil shortage and seizure on the sliding surfaces of the transaxle gears. In the failure case study, the proper repair working and good lubrication are very important for the long life of the transaxle without any tribological failures and oil leakage.

  • In this research, DLC thin films are produced as several hundred nm thickness by PE-CVD method. And then these thin films are estimated tribological characteristics to find out useful possibilities as a protecting film for high-quality function and life extension at MEMs by mechanical properties observation . These are measured thickness and residual stress of DLC coating. Compared after measuring friction coefficient, adhesion force, hardness, cohesive force of coating films. As results all test, we can decide several conclusions. First, friction coefficient decreased, as the load increased. otherwise, friction coefficient increased, as thickness of coating film increased under low load$(1\~50mN)$. Secod, adhesion force increased as thickness of coating films. Third, hardness of coating film is affected by substrate coating film when it is less than thickness of 300nm and it has general hardness of DLC coating film when it is more than thickness of 500nm. Fourth, cohesive force of coating film is complexly affected by hardness, adhesion force, residual stress, etc.

  • Although wear resistance of material improves with increasing its hardness, it is known that the wear resistance of steel is varied with hardness of counter material. In this context, wear properties of steel must be depended on the difference of hardness between the testpiece and the counter material. In this study, using the pin-on-disc type wear machine, annealed carbon steels were tested against ahoy tool steels with various levels of hardness. Then the changes of wear properties of carbon steel according to the hardness of counter material were investigated and the morphology of worn surface after test were evaluated. The results indicate that if there are no remarkable difference of hardness between them, wear resistance of carbon steel in running-in wear decreases with increasing the hardness of counter material. However, its wear properties at the range of high sliding speed have no relation with hardness of counter material. It is clear that wear properties is influenced by the formation of oxide of steel on their worn surface during wear.

  • The microstructure and mechanical properties of a copper alloy sheet processed by differential speed rolling (DSR) were investigated in detail. A copper alloy with thickness of 3 mm was rolled to a 50% reduction at ambient temperature without lubrication and with a differential speed ratio of 2.0:1. For comparison, conventional rolling (CR), in which the rolling speeds of the upper and lower rolls is 2.0 m/min, was also performed under the same rolling conditions. The shear strain of the sample processed by CR showed positive values at the positions of the upper roll side and negative values at the positions of the lower roll side. On the other hand, the sample processed by the DSR showed zero or positive shear strain values at all positions. However, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-rolled copper alloys did not show such significant differences between the CR and the DSR. The samples rolled by the CR and the DSR exhibited a typical deformation structure. In addition, the DSR processed samples showed a typical rolling texture in which {112}<111>, {011}<211> and {123}<634> components were developed at all positions. Therefore, it is concluded that the DSR was very effective for the introduction of a uniform microstructure throughout the thickness of the copper alloy.

  • The circles deform into various shape during deformation, the major and minor axes of which indicate the direction of the major and minor principal strains. Likewise, the measured dimensions are used to determine the major and minor principal strain magnitudes. This circular grid technique of measuring strains can be used to diagnose the causes of necking and fracture in industrial practice and to investigate whether these defects were caused by material property variation, changes in lubrication, of incorrect press settings. In non-axisymmetric deep drawing, three modes of forming regimes are found: draw, stretch, plane strain. The stretch mode for non-axisymmetric deep drawing could be defined when the major and minor strains are positive. The draw mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is negative, and plane strain mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is zero. Through experiments the draw mode was shown on the wall and flange are one of a drawn cup, while the plane strain and the stretch mode were on the punch head and the punch corner area respectively, We observed that the punch load of elliptical deep drawing was decreased according to increase of die corner radius and the thickness deformation of minor side was more large than major side.
