Lubricated Wear Properties of Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites (하이브리드 금속복합재료의 윤활마모특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the lubricated wear properties of Saffil/Al, Saffil/$Al_2O_3/Al$ and Saffil/SiC/Al hybrid metal matrix composites fabricated by squeeze casting method. Wear tests were done on a pin-on-disk friction & wear tester with long sliding distance. The wear properties of the three composites were evaluated in many respects. The effects of Saffil, $Al_2O_3$ particles and SiC particles on the wear behavior of the composites under lubricated conditions were elucidated. Wear mechanisms were analyzed by observing the worn surfaces of the composites. The variation of coefficient of friction (COF) during the wear process was recorded by using a computer. Comparing with the dry sliding condition, all three composites showed excellent wear resistance when lubricated by liquid paraffin. Under intermediate load, Saffil/Al showed best wear resistance among them, and its COF value is the smallest. The dominant wear mechanism of the composites was microploughing, but microcracking also occurred for them to different extent.

  • In the present study, the friction and wear properties of boundary lubricated textured surfaces were investigated. The capability of textured surfaces to feed lubricant into the interface of a sliding contact and to isolate wear partices was studied and related to the properties of the textured surfaces. Well-defined surface textures were produced by lithography and anisotropic etching of silicon wafers. Different widths and distributions of parallel groves were manufactured and subsequently the wafers were PVD coated with thin wear resistant TiN or DLC coatings, retaining the substrate texture. The surfaces were evaluated in reciprocating sliding against a ball bearing steel ball under starved or boundary lubricated conditions.

Under dry sliding condition, the dominant wear mechanism was abrasive wear under mild load and room temperature, and the dominant wear mechanism changed to adhesive wear as load or temperature increased. Molten wear occurred at high temperature. Compared with the dry sliding condition, all three composites showed excellent wear resistance when lubricated by liquid paraffin. Under lubricated condition, Saffil/Al showed the best wear resistance among them, and its COF value was the smallest. The dominant wear mechanism of the composites under lubricated condition was microploughing, but microcracking also occurred to them to different extents.

  • In this work the friction and wear characteristics of the gray cast iron surface processed by broaching method, which is widely used in the machinery industry, were investigated. The broaching process is mainly used for mass production because it has high dimensional accuracy and processing speed, but the defects on surface can be easily generated. In order to improve the tribological characteristics, the approach was to reduce the roughness and hardness of the surface by adding a machining process to the broaching specimen. The secondary machining process using abrasive grains produces low roughness and hardness than broaching because it has high tool accuracy and removes the work hardened surface. The friction coefficient and the wear rate were assessed using a reciprocating-type tribotester to analyze the effects of surface finishing on the tribological properties. The friction tests were conducted under dry and lubricated conditions. The test results showed that the reduction of surface roughness and hardness through secondary machining process in lubricated condition improved the friction and wear characteristics. The reason why the same results did not appear in a dry condition was that wear occurred more rapidly than in lubricated condition. Thus, the positive effect of roughness and hardness of the surface obtained through the secondary machining process was not observed.

Development of Water-lubricated Plastic Bearings (수-윤활용 플라스틱 베어링 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the fabrication process of water-lubricated plastic bearings. Plastic bearings require good mechanical properties and tribological properties as well as elasticity and shock resistance, especially when lubricated in dirty water conditions. In this study, sleeve-type plastic bearings are produced by winding a prepreg sheet, which primary contains nitrile rubber (NBR)-modified epoxy, self-lubricating fillers, and various types of lattice-structured reinforcing fibers such as carbon, Aramid, and polyethylene terephthalate. A thermosetting epoxy is chemically modified with NBR to impart elasticity and low-friction characteristics in water conditions. Experimental investigations are conducted to examine the mechanical and tribological characteristics of the developed bearing materials, and the results are compared with the characteristics of a commercial plastic bearing (Thordon SXL), well known as a water-lubricated bearing. A Thordon bearing (mainly composed of polyurethane) exhibits an extremely low load-bearing capacity and is thus only suitable for medium loading (1~10MPa). The tribological characteristics of the test materials are evaluated through Falex block-on-ring (LFW-1) friction and wear tests. The results indicate that friction exhibited by the carbon-fiber-reinforced NBR-10wt.%-modified epoxy composite material, incorporated with the addition of 20wt.% UHMWPE and 6wt.% paraffin wax, is lower than that of the Thorden bearings, whereas its wear resistance surpass that of Thorden ones. Because of these features, the load carrying capacity of the fabricated composite (>10MPa) is higher than that of the Thorden bearings. These results confirm the applicability of water-lubricated plastic bearing materials developed in this study.

  • Mechanical surface treatment is an excellent approach widely used to modulate and improve the performance and service life of bearings, gears, and frictional joints. The main purpose of this study is to investigate and compare the effect of ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) and wonder process craft (WPC) on the surface and tribological properties of SUJ2 bearing steel. The surface roughness and hardness of the untreated and treated (UNSM- and WPC-treated) specimens were measured and compared. Their tribological properties were evaluated using a micro-tribometer under grease-lubricated and dry conditions against itself. Surface hardness measurement results revealed that both the UNSM- and WPC-treated specimens had a higher hardness than that of the untreated specimen. The surface roughness of the untreated specimen was reduced after UNSM and WPC treatments. Abrasive wear mode was observed on the surface of the specimens worn under grease-lubricated conditions, while adhesive wear mode was found on the surface of the specimens worn in dry conditions. According to the tribological test results, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the untreated specimens were reduced by the application of both the UNSM and WPC treatments under grease-lubricated and dry conditions.

Characteristics of the major tribological parameters in boundary lubrication (경계윤활에서의 주요 Tribological 인자의 특성)

  • Machines that normally operate under fluid film lubricated condition also experience surface damage. This is largely due to the failure of the lubricant film which leads to boundary lubrication. Thus, it is important to have a good understanding of boundary lubrication behavior. In this paper the major tribological parameters that influence the boundary lubrication properties are evaluated. It is shown that disk roughness, hardness and normal load affect the friction and wear of metals in boundary lubrication. Also, the mechanism of surface damage is attributed to abrasion and wear particle interaction.

  • Friction and wear tests were conducted with several different ceramics sliding against ceramic and metal couples with and without lubricant in a two disk type sliding machine. The purpose was to know the tribological properties of ceramics. With very different physical and chemical properties of ceramics compared to metal, the tribological properties of ceramics should be defined in detail. Among them, the wear and friction with same or different couple is very important. Also the lubrication of ceramic is one of the major area to be studied. From this research, SiC, SI$_{3}$N$_{4}$ and ZrO$_{2}$ were slid against SiC, AISI 4340 and bronze under various sliding condition. It was found that the friction and wear of ceramics are strongly dependent on the sliding condition. For unlubricated sliding against SiC, ZrO$_{2}$ shows low wear and friction coefficient over wide lange of load, but with lubricated sliding, SiC shows better performance whatever lubricants were used. Also the effect of lubricant depended upon the material properties of sliding pairs. The general tribological properties of ceramics were not correlated with chattering and noise at low load but it could be reduced or avoided effectively by using lubricants. SiC and Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ slid against SiC have transition from mild to severe wear at high load but ZrO$_{2}$-SiC and SiC-steel have not. Wear debris formed on the contact area of SiC couples was main cause of the initiation of transition. At high speed, only ZrO$_{2}$ sliding against SiC has transition of wear by low thermal conductivity.

Tribological Characteristics of Paraffin Liquid Oil with Nanodiamond and Effects of Surface Hardness on Wear Properties (나노다이아몬드를 첨가한 오일의 트라이볼로지 특성 및 이에 미치는 표면 경도의 영향)

  • Nanodiamond was dispersed in paraffin liquid oil to investigate the effects of nanodiamond at the marginally lubricated condition. Scuffing test and immediate loading sliding wear test were conducted using the fabricated nanodiamond oil. As a result, dispersion of nanodiamond in oil leads to increase in scuffing life, and nanodiamond contents affects the scuffing life. In case of immediate loading sliding wear test, the result was different according to hardness of specimen. If hardness of specimen was low, abrasion of nanodiamond occurred actively. If hardness of specimen was increased, however, nanodiamond can act as a spacer or rolling between contacting surfaces.

Friction, Wear and Scuffing Life of Piston Rings With Several Coating for Low Friction Diesel Enging (다양한 박막을 증착한 디젤 엔진용 피스톤링과 실린더 블록의 마찰 마멸 및 스커핑 수명 평가)

  • Wear and scuffing tests were conducted using friction and wear measurement of piston rings and cylinder blocks in low friction diesel engine. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing in boundary lubricated sliding condition were measured using the reciprocating wear tester. The cylinder blocks were used as reciprocating specimens, and the piston rings with several coatings were used as fixed pin. Several coatings were used such as DLC, TiN, Cr-ceramic and TiAlN in order to improve the tribological characteristics. From the tests wear volume of piston ring surfaces applied various coatings were compared. During the tests coefficients of friction were monitored. Test results showed that DLC coatings showed good tribological properties. TiN and Cr-ceramic coated rings showed good wear resistance properties but produced high friction.
