  • Sliding friction between a spherical pin of 8mm in diameter and flat (disk) substrates coated with vacuum-deposited thin film was measured under ultra high vacuum pressure for various materials, various rates of film supply (8~210 nm/min), various sliding velocities (1.5~67.0 mm/s). It was found that the most effective lubrication was obtained when the adhesion between $Si_3N_4$ pin and SUS440C disk was high and that between $Si_3N_4$ pin and $Si_3N_4$ disk was low. When In film was used as a lubricant between $Si_3N_4$ pin and stainless steel disk, the friction coefficient had a value as low as 0.04. In this case, the normal load W and the sliding speed V were expressed as 10N and 24 mm/s for $10^{-6}Pa$. The dependence of $\mu$ on the thickness h of the Ag film, which was used as a lubricant between $Si_3N_4$ pin and SUS440C (Q) disk was expressed as $\mu$=0.12 for W=10N and V=24mm/s when the film was thicker than 100nm. A brief discussion on these relations is presented from the viewpoint of the real contact area.

  • It is a time to introduce a concept of lubrication to space systems. Minimum amount of lubricant should be supplied to a contact interface instead of preparing too much lubricant on surfaces of the earth. In situ controllable lubrication method is wanted to overcome unexpected tribo-troubles in space. Tribo-coating, which forms a thin solid film in nm-scale by vacuum deposition during friction, is a promising lubrication method for space.

  • The steel wire or steel bar processing process applied to the manufacture of various bolts and power transmission shafts was improved by applying in-line phosphate film treatment technology. By applying a polymer lubricant for a non-reactive metal forming process and a non-reactive non-phosphorus lubricating coating agent, the film formation for each process time was comparatively analyzed and reviewed. Compared to the nine processes applied previously, the in-line phosphate film treatment technology applied with only two processes has been effectively improved in terms of reduction of treatment time, reduction of facility installation area, prevention of water pollution due to wastewater, and non-use of ozone-depleting substances. In addition, it was found that it can have an important effect on productivity improvement and price competitiveness from the simplification of quality control and process control as well as improvement of the working environment.

  • An experimental investigation is carried out to Study the cavitation in a journal bearing with pressurized lubricant supply. Visual observations are performed at various shaft speeds and supply pressure levels. Oil film pressure is measured at various shaft speeds under the submerged condition. Results from visual observations show that the extent of cavitation is reduced as supply pressure increases. The film pressure measurements indicate the occurrence of a negative pressure loop upstream of the cavitation region and a constant cavitation Pressure through the cavitation region.

  • In the present study, we developed a numerical analysis software to predict performance of tilting-pad thrust bearings. The finite element method was adopted to compute lubricant film pressure and temperature. Three-dimensional heat transfer equations were solved simultaneously for the lubricant film, pad, and runner. Groove temperature was assumed with two different models. From application of the software to a thrust bearing, it has been seen that the three-dimensional analysis predicts higher temperature than the average temperature analysis. It has also been found that the groove model with a hot-oil-carry-over factor predicts higher temperature.

  • The effects of high viscosity polybutene lubricant on the asperity contacts between a flat washer and a ball were tested using three balls/two flat washers rotational apparatus. The asperity contacts were dependent on the ratio of EHD flim thickness (h) and surface roughness($\sigma$). The viscosity-pressure coefficient of lubricant gave a significant effect on the film thickness and thereby on h/$\sigma$ ratio.

  • The static and dynamic performances of a floating ring journal bearing with central circumferential grooves at the inner and outer films are obtained numerically with isothermal lubrication theory. Elrod algorithm implementing Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson cavitation boundary condition is adopted to predict cavitation regions in the inner and outer films more accurately than conventional analyses using half Sommerfeld or Reynolds conditions. The pressure drop in the circumferential groove of the inner film due to the rotation of the journal and ring is taken into account. It is shown that the lubricant supply pressure has significant influence on the load capacity and dynamic coefficients of the bearing. When the supply pressure is low and the journal speed is high, the pressure drop results in severe starvation of lubricant in the inner film and varies the overall performance of the bearing remarkably.

  • Hydrogenated Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were Prepared by the radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF PECVD) method on silicon substrates using methane $(CH_4)$ and hydrogen $(H_2)$ gas for the application to solid lubricant of MEMS devices. We have checked the influence of varying RF power on tribological properties of DLC film. We have checked their performance as two kinds of method such as FFM (Friction Force Microscope) and BOD (Ball-on Disk) measurement. The friction coefficients and the contact number of cycles to steady state decreased as the increase of RF power with FFM and BOD measurement, respectively.

  • The subsurface stress field beneath the roller due to the lubricant film pressure acting on the roller surface has been calculated. Main purpose of this study in view of engineering is to prove the validity of the numerical profile roller presented by Koo et al who obtained the lubricant film pressure by elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis on the cam-roller mechanism. The stress field for the numerical profile roller was compared with the one for the existing dub-off profile roller.

  • Gas foil bearings (GFBs) enable small- to medium-sized turbomachinery to operate at ultra-high speeds in a compact design by using ambient air or process gas as a lubricant. When using air or process gas, which have lower viscosity than lubricant oil, the turbomachinery has the advantage of reduced power loss from bearing friction drag. However, GFBs may have high Reynolds number, which causes turbulent flows due to process gas with low viscosity and high density. This paper analyzes gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) with high Reynolds numbers and studies the effects of turbulent flows on the static and dynamic performance of bearings. For comparison purposes, air and R-134a gas lubricants are applied to the GFJBs. For the air lubricant, turbulence is dominant only at rotor speeds higher than 200 krpm. At those speeds, the journal eccentricity decreases, but the film thickness, power loss, and direct stiffness and damping coefficients increase. On the other hand, the R-134a gas lubricant, which that has much higher density than air, causes dominant turbulence at rotor speeds greater than 10 krpm. The turbulent flow model predicts decreased journal eccentricity but increased film thickness and power loss when compared with the lamina flow model predictions. The vertical direct stiffness and damping coefficients are lower at speeds below 100 krpm, but higher beyond that speeds for the turbulent model. The present results indicate that turbulent flow effects should be considered for accurate performance predictions of GFJBs with high Reynolds number.
