  • Programmed PWM(Pulse Width Modulated) generation techniques eliminating several low order harmonics have been widely used in the inverter circuit which produces minimum current ripple, reduced torque pulsation and thereby improves overall system performance. However, the applications of the programmed PWM technique are limited to CVCF(Constant Voltage Constant Frequency) applications and various motor drives. Although the programmed PWM produces a lower harmonic distorted waveform than the carrier modulated PWM, real-time programming is not possible because of the complicated calculation required for the gating signal. In this paper, a new programmed PWM technique named TAM (time averaging model) is developed to compensate for the demerits of the conventional programmed PWM technique with moderate harmonic distortion. Computer simulations are performed to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • this paper a new PAM-PWM Inverter using IGBT Is described. The output waveforms in the proposed PAM-PWM inverter are investigated both theoretiically and experimentally. The line-voltage waveform is composed of fundamental component and the sidebands of carrier frequency. The lower order harmonics are not included In the output waveform. As each inverter arm does not operate during two-thirds period, the heats, generated in the devices are reduced. That is the size of the inverter system can be minimized because of the reduction In the heat dissipating equipemnt.

  • Active power filters can be cost-effective for use in practical systems with the insertion of a few passive elements in shunt or series configuration. The resulting hybrid filters can be designed to provide dominant lower order harmonic elimination and reactive power support by the passive elements so that the burden on the active filter counterpart is reduced. In this paper, the rate reduction in the shunt active filter is estimated when it is connected in parallel with suitable passive tuned harmonic filters. The active filtering system is based on an appropriate control scheme. The simulation and the experimental results of the shunt active filter, along with the estimated value of reduction in rating, show that the hybrid shunt filtering system is quite effective in compensating for the harmonics and reactive power, in addition to being cost-effective.

  • A novel hybrid carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) scheme that combines unipolar and dipolar modulations is proposed for single-phase three-level rectifiers, which are widely applied in railway traction drive systems. The proposed CBPWM method can satisfy the volt-second balancing principle in the complete modulation index region through overmodulation compensation. The modulation scheme features two modulation modes: unipolar and dipolar. The operation range limits of these modulation modes can be modified by changing the separation coefficient. In comparison with the traditional unipolar CBPWM, the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme can provide advantageous features, such as lower high-order harmonic distortion of the line current and better utilization of switching frequency. The separation coefficient value is optimized to achieve the maximum utilization of these advantages. The experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme.

  • The V/F slip frequency constant control methods are used for driving induction motor with load commutated current source inverter, that is. constant V/F and slip frequency driving is used to load commutate the inverter below the critical frequency, while constant voltage and variable frequency and slip frequency driving are used in above the critical region. In order to applicate the load commutated current source inverter to the general use, speed control range of induction noter is selected to two times at rated frequency. Therefore, economical application is possible because of the maximum reduction of the condenser of the inverter output port. The use of the proposed force commutated circuit improves the false operation of force commutated circuit and inverter commutation failure which are produced by the influence of the lower-order harmonics of the conventional load commutated current source inverter at starting.

  • This paper proposes a double line voltage synthesis (DLVS) strategy for three-to-five phase direct matrix converters. In the proposed strategy, the input and expected output voltages are divided into 6 segments and 10 segments, respectively. In addition, in order to obtain the maximum voltage transfer ratio (VTR), the input line voltages and "source key" should be selected reasonably according to different combinations of input and output segments. Then, the corresponding duty ratios are calculated to determine the switch sequences in different segment combinations. The output voltages and currents are still sinusoidal and symmetrical with little lower order harmonics under unbalanced or distorted input voltages by using this strategy. In addition, the common mode voltage (CMV) can be suppressed by rearranging some of the switching states. This strategy is analyzed and studied by a simulation model established in MATLAB/Simulink and an experimental platform, which is controlled by a DSP and FPGA. Simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility and validity of the proposed DLVS strategy.

  • Cogging torque has a negative impact on the operation of permanent magnet machines by increasing torque ripple, speed ripple, acoustic noise and vibration. In this paper Magnet Shifting Method has been used as a tool to reduce the cogging torque in inset Line Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (LSPMSM). It has been shown that Magnet Shifting Method can effectively eliminate several lower-order harmonics of cogging torque. In order to implement the method, first the expression of cogging torque is studied based on the Fourier analysis. An analytical expression is then introduced based on Permanent Magnet Shifting to reduce cogging torque of LSPMS motors. The method is applied to some existing machine designs and their performances are obtained using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The effect of magnet shifting on pole mmf (magneto motive force) distribution in air gap is discussed. The side effects of magnet shifting on back-EMF, core losses and torque profile distortion are taken into account in this investigation. Finally the experimental results on two prototypes 24 slot 4 pole inset LSPMS motors have been used to validate the theoretical analysis.

  • In this paper, carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM), space vector PWM (SVPWM) and reduced switching losses PWM (RSLPWM) for the three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter are introduced. In the case of the neutral point (NP) potential (NPP) offset, an asymmetric disposition PWM (ASPDPWM) strategy is proposed, which can output PWM sequences correctly and suppress the lower order harmonics of the inverter effectively. An NPP balance strategy based on carrier based PWM (CBPWM) is analyzed. A hybrid modulation strategy combining RSLPWM and the NPP balance based on CBPWM is proposed, and hysteresis control is adopted to switch between the two modulation strategies. An experimental prototype of the three-level NPC inverter is built. The effectiveness of the hybrid modulation is verified with a resistance-inductance load and a permanent magnetic synchronous motor (PMSM) load, respectively. The experimental results show that reduced switching losses and an acceptable NPP can be effectively achieved in the hybrid modulation strategy.

  • In variable speed driving system of three phase induction motor controlled by an inverter, because of the switching of semiconductor devices in inverter, an appreciable amount of harmonic components of voltage waveform can cause the motor to generate losses, torque ripple, acoustic noise and oscillation of semiconductor devices. • Predicting precise specifications of differential mixed-signal circuits is a difficult problem, because analytically derived correlation between process variations and conventional specifications exhibits the limited prediction accuracy due to the phase unbalance, for most self-tests. This paper proposes an efficient prediction technique to provide accurate specifications of differential mixed-signal circuits in a system-on-chip (SoC) based on a nonlinear statistical nonlinear regression technique. A spectrally pure sinusoidal signal is applied to a differential DUT, and its output is fed into another differential DUT through a weighting circuitry in the loopback configuration. The weighting circuitry, which is employed from the previous work [3], efficiently produces different weights on the harmonics of the loopback responses, i.e., the signatures. The correlation models, which map the signatures to the conventional specifications, are built based on the statistical nonlinear regression technique, in order to predict accurate nonlinearities of individual DUTs. In production testing, once the efficient signatures are measured, and plugged into the obtained correlation models, the harmonic coefficients of DUTs are readily identified. This work provides a practical test solution to overcome the serious test issue of differential mixed-signal circuits; the low accuracy of analytically derived model is much lower by the errors from the unbalance. Hardware measurement results showed less than 1.0 dB of the prediction error, validating that this approach can be used as production test.
