KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) launched a new project to develop the low-temperature geothermal water in the area showing high geothermal anomaly, north of Pohang city, for large-scale space heating. Surface geologic and geophysical surveys including Landsat 1M image analysis, gravity, magnetic, Magnetotelluric (MT) and controlled-source audio-frequency MT (CSAMT), and self-potential (SP) methods have been conducted and the possible fracture zone was found that would serve as deeply connected geothermal water conduit. In 2004, two test wells of 1.1km and 1.5km depths have been drilled and various kinds of borehole survey including geophysical logging, pumping test, SP monitoring, core logging and sample analysis have followed. Temperature of geothermal water at the bottom of 1.5km borehole reached over $70^{\circ}C$ and the pumping test showed that the reservoir contained huge amount of geothermal water. Drilling for the production well of 2 km depth is on going. After test utilization and the feasibility study, geothermal water developed from the production well is going to be provided to nearby apartments.
In recent printed electronics technology, Photo-Sintering, a technique for sintering materials using a light source, has attracted attention as an alternative to time-consuming high-temperature thermal processes. The key principle of this technique is the selective heating of a strongly absorbent thin film, while preventing the heating of the transparent substrate by the light source. Many recent studies have used a flash lamp as the light source, and investigated the material-dependent effect of the width or intensity of the pulsed light. However, the flash lamp for sintering is not suitable for industry yet, because of needing too high power to sinter for a large scale. In energy-saving and large-scale sintering, LED technologies would be very useful in the near future. In this work, we investigated a sintering process for silver nanoparticles using UV-LED array. Silver nanoparticles in ink were inkjet-printed on a $1{\times}1cm$ area of a PET film and photo-sintered by 365 nm UV-LED module. A sheet resistance value as low as $72.6m{\Omega}/sq$ (2.3 - 4.5 times that of bulk silver) was obtained from the UV-LED sintering at 300 mW/cm2 for 50 min.
Background and Objectives : LED(Light emitting diode) is recently introduced as a energy-saving light source in many area including agriculture and environment. In medical field it is known as bright and safe light source in surgical lighting including headlight. This study is aimed to test effectiveness and cost-saving of mountain-climbing headlight in comparison with xenon headlight. Materials and Methods : Internet market-available mountain-climbing headlight was compared with medical xenon headlight regarding heat generation after 30 minutes' usage, intensity of illumination and possible burn to the perioral skin. To get temperature data, 5 cases of tonsillectomy were done with the aid of LED headlight, while another 5 tonsillectomies were done using xenon headlight. Results : The temperatures of all light sources were below 45 degrees Celcius until finish of the surgery without burn or complications. No differences in operation time with both headlights. The maximal intensities of illumination were 24000 Lux for xenon, 20000 Lux for LED. Conclusion : Mountain-climbing headlight could be safe and helpful light source with low cost in simple oral surgery.
Further scaling the semiconductor devices down to low dozens of nanometer needs the extremely shallow depth in junction and the intentional counter-doping in the silicon gate. Conventional ion beam ion implantation has some disadvantages and limitations for the future applications. In order to solve them, therefore, plasma source ion implantation technique has been considered as a promising new method for the high throughputs at low energy and the fabrication of the ultra-shallow junctions. In this paper, we study about the effects of DC bias and base pressure as a process parameter. The diluted mixture gas (5% $PH_3/H_2$) was used as a precursor source and chamber is used for vacuum pressure conditions. After ion doping into the Si wafer(100), the samples were annealed via rapid thermal annealing, of which annealed temperature ranges above the $950^{\circ}C$. The junction depth, calculated at dose level of $1{\times}10^{18}/cm^3$, was measured by secondary ion mass spectroscopy(SIMS) and sheet resistance by contact and non-contact mode. Surface morphology of samples was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. As a result, we could accomplish the process conditions better than in advance.
ZnO nanorods were grown on Au-coated Si substrates by vapor phase transport (VPT) at the growth temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ using a mixture of zinc oxide and graphite powders as source material. Au thin films with the thickness of 5 nm were deposited by ion sputtering. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) was carried out to investigate the optical properties of the ZnO nanorods. Five peaks at 3.363, 3.327, 3.296, 3.228, and 3.143 eV, corresponding to the free exciton (FX), neutral donor bound exciton ($D^{\circ}X$), first order longitudinal optical phonon replica of free exciton (FX-1LO), FX-2LO, and FX-3LO emissions, were obtained at low-temperature (10 K). The intensity of these peaks decreased and their position was red shifted with the increase in the temperature. The FX emission peak energy of the ZnO nanorods exhibited an anomalous behavior (red-blue-red shift) with the increase in temperature. This is also known as an "S-shaped" emission shift. The thermal activation energy for the exciton with increasing temperature in the ZnO nanorods is found to be about 26.6 meV; the values of Varshni's empirical equation fitting parameters are = $5{\times}10^{-4}eV/K$, ${\beta}=350K$, and $E_g(0)=3.364eV$.
Silicon nitride films were deposited at $100^{\circ}C$ by using the catalytic chemical vapor deposition technique. The source gas mixing ratio, $R_N=[NH_3]/[SiH_4]$, was varied from 10 to 30, and the hydrogen dilution ratio, $R_H=[H_2]/[SiH_4]$, was varied from 20 to 100. The breakdown field strength reached a maximum value at $R_N=20$ and $R_H=20$, whereas the resistivity decreased in the same sample. The relative permittivity had a positive correlation with the breakdown field strength. The capacitance-voltage threshold curve showed an asymmetric hysteresis loop, which became more squared as $R_H$ increased. The width of the hysteresis window showed a negative correlation with the slope of the transition region, implying that the combined effect of $R_N$ and $R_H$ overides the interface defects while creating charge storage sites in the bulk region.
Geothermal heat pump systems use the earth as a heat source in heating mode and a heat sink in cooling mode. These systems can be used for heating or cooling systems in farm facilities such as greenhouses for protected horticulture, cattle sheds, mushroom house and etc. A horizontal type means that a geothermal heat exchanger is laid in the trench buried in 1.2 to 1.8 m depth. Because a horizontal type has advantages of low installation, operation and maintenance costs compared to a vertical type, it is easy to be adopted to agriculture. In this study, to heat and cool farm facilities and obtain basic data for practical application of horizontal geothermal heat pump system in agriculture, a horizontal geothermal heat pump system of 10 RT was installed in greenhouse. Heating and cooling performance of this system was estimated. The horizontal geothermal heat pump used in this study had heating COP of 4.57 at soil temperature of $14^{\circ}C$ with depth of 1.75m and heating COP of 3.75 at soil temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ with the same depth. The cooling COP was 2.7 at ground temperature at 1.75m depth of $25.5^{\circ}C$ and 2.0 at the temperature of $33.5^{\circ}C$.
Popular techniques for producing hydrogen by converting methane include steam reforming and catalyst reforming. However, these are high temperature and high pressure processes limited by equipment, cost and difficulty of operation. Low temperature plasma is projected to be a technique that can be used to produce high concentration hydrogen from methane. It is suitable for miniaturization and fur application in other technologies. In this research, the effect of changing each of the following variables was studied using an AC GlidArc system that was conceived by the research team: the gas components ratio, the gas flow rate, the catalyst reactor temperature and voltage. Results were obtained for methane and hydrogen yields and intermediate products. The system used in this research consisted of 3 electrodes and an AC power source. In this study, air was added fur the partial oxidation reaction of methane. The result showed that as the gas flow rate, the catalyst reactor temperature and the electric power increased, the methane conversion rate and the hydrogen concentration also increased. With $O_2/C$ ratio of 0.45, input flow rate of 4.9 l/min and power supply of 1 kW as the reference condition, the methane conversion rate, the high hydrogen selectivity and the reformer energy density were 69.2%, 32.6% and 35.2% respectively.

Superconducting proximity effects of Nb/Si(111) were investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy(STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy(STS). A highly-doped($0.002\;{\omega}{\diamondsuit}cm$) Si wafer pieces were used as substrate and Nb source was thermally evaporated onto the atomically clean silicon substrate. The temperature of the silicon sample was held at $600^{\circ}C$ during the niobium deposition. And the sample was annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes additionally. Volmer-Weber growth mode is preferred in Nb/Si(111) at the sample temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. With proper temperature and annealing time, we can obtain Nb islands of lateral size larger than Nb coherence length(~38nm). And outside of the islands, bare Si($7{\times}7$) reconstructed surface is exposed due to the Volmer-Weber Growth mode. STS measurement at 5.6K showed that Nb island have BCS-like superconducting gap of about 2mV around the Fermi level and the critical temperature is calculated to be as low as 6.1K, which is lower than that of bulk niobium, 9.5K. This reduced value of superconducting energy gap indicates suppression of superconductivity in nanostructures. Moreover, the superconducting state is extended out of the Nb island, over to bare Si surface, due to the superconducting proximity effect. Spatially-resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy(SR-STS) data taken over the inside and outside of the niobium island shows gradually reduced superconducting gap.
This paper presents the temperature-pressure characteristics of a new SMH actuator using a Peltier module. The SMH actuator is characterized by its small size, low weight, noiseless operation, and compliance similar to that of the human body. The simple SMH actuator, consisting of the plated hydrogen-absorbing alloys as a power source, Peltier elements as a heat source, and a cylinder with metal bellows as a functioning part has been developed. To improve the thermal conductivity of the hydrogen-absorbing alloy, an assembly of copper pipes has been used. It is well known that hydrogen-absorbing alloys can reversibly absorb and desorb a large amount of hydrogen, more than about 1000 times of their own volume. The hydrogen equilibrium pressure increases when hydrogen is desorbed by heating of the hydrogen-absorbing alloys, whereas by cooling the alloys, the hydrogen equilibrium pressure decreases and hydrogen is absorbed. The new special metal hydride (SMH) actuator uses the reversible reaction between the heat energy and mechanical energy of a hydrogen absorbing alloys. The desirable characteristics of SMH actuator, which makes it suitable for the uses in medical and rehabilitation applications, have been also studied. For this purpose, the characteristics of the new SMH actuator for different temperature, pressure, and external load were explored.
