In river design, consideration of bed shear stresses is necessary to secure stability of levee and floodplain. In this study distributions of bed shear stresses in compound open channels are analyzed through numerical simulation for various width and depth. LES solver in OpenFOAM is applied to 12 cases of compound channel shapes considering secondary flow which effects distributions of bed shear stresses. By the results time averaged velocity distributions, secondary currents, and distributions of bed shear stresses are analyzed. Overall distributions of bed shears in floodplain show that higher shear stresses are seen in left of floodplain and the shears decrease toward right of floodplain. However, high local variations in shear stresses are shown due to the secondary flow effects. In shallow floodplain, bed shear stresses show low value below 0.8 times of averaged bed shear. In deep floodplain, bed shear stresses show high value over 1.2 - 1.4 times of averaged bed shear.

The analysis for unsteady flow is necessary to design the hydraulic structures affected by water level and discharge changes through time. The numerical model has been generally used for unsteady flow analysis, however it is difficult to acquire field data to calibrate and validate the numerical model. Even though it is possible to collect field data for some case, high cost and labor are required and sometimes it is considered that the confidence of measured data is very low. In this case, the experimental data for unsteady flow can be used to calibrate and validate the numerical model as an alternative. Therefore, the discharge-supply system which could generate various type of unsteady flow hydrograph was developed in this study. Also, the accuracy of the unsteady flow hydrograph generated by developed dischargesupply system in the experiment was evaluated by comparing with target hydrograph. Accuracy errors and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) were analyzed for the rectangular-type hydrograph with sudden changes of flow, triangular-type hydrograph with short peak time, and bell-type flood hydrograph. As a result, the generating error of the discharge-supply system for the rectangular-type hydrograph was about 59% which was maximum error among various types. Also, it was represented that RMSE for the triangular-type hydrographs with single and double peaks were approximately corresponding to 10%. However, RMSE for the bell-type flood hydrograph was lower than 2%.
This study establishes a conceptual model to analyze heavy rainfall events in Korea using multi-functional transport satellite-1R satellite images. Three heavy rainfall episodes in two major synoptic types, such as synoptic low (SL) type and synoptic flow convergence (SC) type, are analyzed through a conceptual model procedure which proceeds on two steps: 1) conveyer belt model analysis to detect convective area, and 2) cloud top temperature analysis from black body temperature (TBB) data to distinguish convective cloud from stratiform cloud, and eventually estimate heavy rainfall area and intensity. Major synoptic patterns causing heavy rainfall are Changma, synoptic low approach, upper level low in the SL type, and upper level low, indirect effect of typhoon, convergence of tropical air in the SC type. The relationship between rainfall and TBBs in overall well resolved areas of heavy rainfall. The SC type tended to underestimate the intensity of heavy rainfall, but the analysis with the use of water vapor channel has improved the performance. The conceptual model improved a concrete utilization of images and data of satellite, as summarizing characteristics of major synoptic type causing heavy rainfall and composing an algorism to assess the area and intensity of heavy rainfall. The further assessment with various cases is required for the operational use.

To optimize the shape of the electrostatic precipitator for the removal of particulate matter in subway environments, the wind-tunnel experiments were carried out to characterize collection efficiency and ozone emission rate. As a standardized parameter, power consumption divided by the square of flow velocity, was increased, the $PM_{10}$ collection efficiency increased. If the standardized parameter is higher than 1.0 due to high power consumption or low flow velocity, increase in thickness of electrodes from 1 to 2 mm, or increase in distance of collection plates from 5 to 10 cm did not change the $PM_{10}$ collection efficiency much. Increase in thickness of high-voltage electrodes, however, can cause decrease in $PM_{10}$ collection efficiency by 28% for low power consumption and high flow velocity. The ozone emission rate decreased as distance of collection plates became wider, because the ozone emission rate per unit channel was constant, and the number of collection channels decreased as the distance of collection plates increased. When the distance of collection plates was narrow, the ozone emission rate increased with the increase of the thickness of electrodes, but the difference was negligible when the distance of collection plates was wide. It was found that the electrostatic precipitator having a thin high-voltage electrodes and a narrow distance of collection plates is advantageous. However, to increase the thickness of high-voltage electrodes, or to increase the distance of collection plates is needed, it is necessary to increase the applied voltage or reduce the flow rate to compensate reduction of the collection efficiency.

The aim of this study was to provide basic data in managing the project that was carried out on Bulgwangcheon in a nature-friendly way to improve the conditions around the areas, which was brought to completion in 2002, based on changes in ecological characteristics. For this propose, this study examined documents related to the project, compared physical and enviromnental changes before and after the project was conducted and analyzed changes in the stream ecosystem. The result showed that in areas that effluent water was often observed, especially when it rained, the river wall was washed away and vegetation was found damaged. As for actual vegetation, this study compared planting coverage of each section of the research area and actual vegetation charts. The results indicated that Lespedeza spp., Aster koraiensis among mixed seeds that were planted in the reservoir path were almost swept away while Festuca arundinacea dominated the areas. Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorns and Salix gracilistyla which had been planted in a small number were also almost washed out though a small number of them were left to form a colony. After examining the topography and structure of the plant community, this study found that areas where mixed seed were planted had changed into two types of vegetation: First type of area is dominated by P and R which are usually raised in apron with abundant floating particles. The second type of area is dominated by dry gramineous plant such as F and A. Areas around low flow channel where Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Salix gracilistyla planting construction method is applied was washed away with the width of low flow channel reduced. Though P, M and S formed a small community in some areas around the low flow area, they were in small number and in composition of simple plant species. Two ways were suggested in this study to manage the stream in an ecological way. First, adequate revetment construction methods should be applied by monitoring the flow of the stream as well as considering the flood control of urban streams. Second, target vegetation communities that are suitable for the environment of the stream should be chosen and be plantedconstantly with high density. At the same time, ornamental native plants shouldn't be planted as they have been and disturbing vegetation should be removed.

A multiple production .epsilon. equation model was developed in the low Reynolds number $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model with the aids of DNS data. We derived the model theoretically and avoided the use of empirical correlations as much as possible in order for the model to have generality in the prediction of complex turbulent flow. Unavoidable model constants were, however, optimized with the aids of DNS data. All the production and dissipation models in the $\varepsilon$ equation were modified with damping functions to satisfy the wall limiting behavior. A new $f_{\mu}$ function, turbulent diffusion and pressure diffusion model for the k and .epsilon. equations were also proposed to satisfy the wall limiting behavior. By, computational investigation on the plane channel flows, we found that the multiple production model for .epsilon. equation could improve the near wall turbulence behavior compared with the standard production model without the complicated empirical modification. Satisfication of the wall limiting conditions for each turbulence model term was found to be most important for the accurate prediction of near wall turbulence behaviors.
Fluid muds commonly occur in estuarine environments, but their ancient examples have rarely been studied in terms of depositional characteristics and processes. Cores of estuarine channel deposits of the Early Cretaceous McMurray Formation, Alberta, Canada show various mudstone layers that possess depositional characteristics of high clay-concentration flows. These mudstone layers are examined in detail through microscopic observation of thin sections and classified into three microfacies (<1 to 25 mm thick) on the basis of sedimentary texture and structures. Structureless mudstone (Microfacies 1) consists mainly of clay particles and contains randomly dispersed coarser grains (coarse silt to fine sand). This microfacies is interpreted as being deposited by cohesive mud flows, i.e., fluid muds, which possessed sufficient strength to support suspended coarser grains (quasi-laminar plug flow). Silt-streaked mudstone (Microfacies 2) mainly comprises mudstone with dispersed coarse grains and includes very thin, discontinuous silt streaks of coarse-silt to very-fine-sand grains. The texture similar to Microfacies 1 indicates that Microfacies 2 was also deposited by cohesive fluid muds. The silt streaks are, however, suggestive of the presence of intermittent weak turbulence under the plug (upper transitional plug flow). Heterolithic laminated mudstone (Microfacies 3) is characterized by alternation of relatively thick silt laminae and much thinner clay laminae. It is either parallel-laminated or low-angle cross-laminated, occasionally showing low-amplitude ripple forms. The heterolithic laminae are interpreted as the results of shear sorting in the basal turbulent zone under a cohesive plug. They may represent low-amplitude bed-waves formed under lower transitional plug flows. These three microfacies reflect a range of flow phases of fluid muds, which change with flow velocities and suspended mud concentrations. The results of this study provide important knowledge to recognize fluid-mud deposits in ancient sequences and to better understand depositional processes of mudstones.
Denitrification in streams is of great importance because it is essential for amelioration of water quality and accurate estimation of $N_2O$ budgets. Denitrification is a major biological source or sink of $N_2O$, an important greenhouse gas, which is a multi-step respiratory process that converts nitrate ($NO_3{^-}$) to gaseous forms of nitrogen ($N_2$ or $N_2O$). In aquatic ecosystems, the complex interactions of water flooding condition, substrate supply, hydrodynamic and biogeochemical properties modulate the extent of multi-step reactions required for $N_2O$ flux. Although water flow in streambed and residence time affect reaction output, effects of a complex interaction of hydrodynamic, geomorphology and biogeochemical controls on the magnitude of denitrification in streams are still illusive. In this work, we built a two-dimensional water flow channel and measured $N_2O$ flux from channel sediment with different bed geomorphology by using static closed chambers. Two independent experiments were conducted with identical flume and geomorphology but sediment with differences in dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The experiment flume was a circulation channel through which the effluent flows back, and the size of it was $37m{\times}1.2m{\times}1m$. Five days before the experiment began, urea fertilizer (46% N) was added to sediment with the rate of $0.5kg\;N/m^2$. A sand dune (1 m length and 0.15 m height) was made at the middle of channel to simulate variations in microtopography. In high- DOC experiment, $N_2O$ flux increases in the direction of flow, while the highest flux ($14.6{\pm}8.40{\mu}g\;N_2O-N/m^2\;hr$) was measured in the slope on the back side of the sand dune. followed by decreases afterward. In contrast, low DOC sediment did not show the geomorphological variations. We found that even though topographic variation influenced $N_2O$ flux and chemical properties, this effect is highly constrained by carbon availability.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon growth from cyclopentadiene (CPD) pyrolysis was investigated using a laminar flow reactor operating in a temperature range of 600 to $950^{\circ}c$. Major products from CPD pyrolysis are benzene, indene and naphthalene. Formation of observed products from CPD is explained as follows. Addition of the cyclopentadienyl radical to a CPD $\pi$-bond produces a resonance-stabilized radical, which further reacts by one of three unimolecular channels: intramolecular addition, C-H bond $\beta$-scission, or C-C bond $\beta$-scission. The intramolecular addition pathway produces a 7-norbornenyl radical, which then decomposes to indene. Decomposition by C-H bond $\beta$-scission produces a biaryl intermediate, which then undergoes a ring fusion sequence that has been proposed for dihydrofulvalene-to-naphthalene conversion. In this study, we propose C-C bond $\beta$-scission pathway as an alternative reaction channel to naphthalene from CPD. As preliminary computational analysis, Parametric Method 3 (PM3) molecular calculation suggests that intramolecular addition to form indene is favored at low temperatures and C-C bond $\beta$-scission leading to naphthalene is predominant at high temperatures.
This paper presents the numerical simulation results of heat transfer and friction loss for a rotating two-pass duct with the airfoil-guide vanes in the turning region. The Kriging model is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of flow field and heat transfer with shear stress transport turbulent model. To improve the heat transfer performance, angle and location of the airfoil-guide vanes have been selected as design variables. The optimization problem has been defined as a minimization of the objective function, which is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weight factor. The airfoil-guide vanes in the turning region keep the high level of heat transfer while the friction loss has a low value. By comparing the presence or absence of airfoil-guide vanes, it is shown that the airfoil-guide vanes exhibited the best heat transfer performance to improve the blade cooling except the first passage.
