  • The variations of temperature and velocity fields in a Hele-Shaw convection cell (HSC) were investigated using a holographic interferometry and 2-D PIV system with varying Rayleigh number. To measure quasisteady changes of temperature field, two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry; double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves can be eliminated effectively using digital image processing technique and the reconstruction images are clear, but transient flow structure cannot be reconstructed clearly. On the other hand, transient convective flow can be reconstructed well using the real-time method. However, the fringe patterns reconstructed by the real-time method contain more noises, compared with the double-exposure method. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow structure at high Rayleigh numbers. The periodic flow pattern at high Rayleigh numbers obtained by the real-time holographic interferometer method is in a good agreement with the PIV results.

  • Nanoimprint lithography(NIL) is becoming next generation lithography of significant interest due to its low cost and a potential patterning resolution of 10nm or less. Success of the NIL relies on the adequate conditions of pressure, temperature and time. To have the adequate conditions for NIL, one has to understand the polymer flowing behavior during the imprinting process. In this paper, an analytical approach of polymer flow in thermal NIL was performed based on the squeeze flow with partial slip boundary conditions. Velocity profiles and pressure distributions of the polymer flow were obtained and imprinting forces and residual thickness were predicted with the consideration of the slip velocity between the polymer and the mold/substrate. The results show that the consideration of the slip is very important for investigating the polymer flow in Thermal NIL.

  • This paper deals with flow characteristics on the air entrainment and the energy dissipation in nappe flow over the stepped drop structure. Nappe flow occurred at low flow rates and for relatively large step height Dominant flow features include an air pocket, a free-falling nappe impact and a subsequent hydraulic jump on the downstream step. Air entrainment occurred from the step edge, through a free-falling nappe impact and a hydraulic jump. Most energy was dissipated by nappe impact and in the downstream hydraulic jump. It was related with the step height and the overflow depth, but not related with step slope. The stepped drop structure was found to be effcient for water treatment and energy dissipation associated with substantial air entrainment.

  • Uniformity of velocity is quite important design points of a vertical laminar flow type clean room. In the present paper, flows in a room with a bottom pannel are numerically simulated by using a low-Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model, and a new flow model of the pannel are suggested. Resistance coefficient of the pannel and size of the exhaust channel show considerable effects on flow pattern and uniformity of flow on the bottom. Reflection coefficient also has important roles. A possibility to obtain the uniform and unidirectional flow is tested by adjusting the distribution of resistance coefficient of the pannel. Such a numerical simulation of the flow will be a good method to get optimun design parameters.

  • The flow at the impeller exit is important to validate engineering design and numerical analysis of pumps. However, it is not easy to measure the flow at the impeller exit and evaluate the impeller performance since there is usually strong interaction between the impeller and the volute casing. We installed axisymmetric collector instead of the volute casing, so there is no interaction between the impeller and casing. A 3-hole Cobra probe is used to investigate the flow at impeller exit and vaneless diffuser region for design and on design flow rate. For a single suction centrifugal pump of low specific speed, the flow field such as velocity, flow angle, and total pressure are measured by traversing the probe across the vaneless diffuser. These data can be used for performance prediction, desist and numerical analysis of pumps.

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-impingement jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. To study the flow characteristics especially in the jet flow region, three different distributions of mass flow rate at 5-jet exits were assumed. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) A periodical fully developed flow was observed from the third protrusion. This was also observed from previous experimentally by Whidden at al. The Nessult number at the protrusion surface increased mildly as going downstream. 2) The low Reynolds number turbulence model of Launder and Sharma was found to be adequate for the prediction of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of two dimensional multi-jet configuration. 3) The Nusselt number at the protrusion surface was nearly proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number.

  • Variations of temperature and velocity fields in a Hele-Shaw Convection Cell (HSC) were measured using a holographic interferometry and PIV technique with varying Rayleigh number. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow at high Rayleigh numbers. Two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry, double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed to measure the temperature field variations of HSC convective flow. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves can be eliminated and reconstruction images are clear, but transient flow structure cannot be observed clearly. On the other hand, transient flow can be observed and reconstructed well using the real-time method. PIV results show that flow inside the HSC is periodic and the oscillating state is well matched with the temperature field results. The holographic interferometry and PIV techniques employed in this study are useful for analyzing the unsteady convective thermal fluid flows.

  • The method to consider gravity effect on the performance of a condenser is developed, and a simple condenser having 'nU' type two circuits is analyzed. Each circuit has the same length and inlet air-side operational conditions. The only difference between two circuits is the direction of refrigerant flow, which is exactly opposite each other between the upper 'n' type circuit and the lower 'U' type circuit. It is shown that the gravity makes the distribution of refrigerant flow uneven in the two circuits at lower refrigerant flow rates; heat transfer rate also becomes uneven. Moreover, much of the refrigerant exists as liquid state in the circuit having low refrigerant flow rate, which will make the cycle balance unstable in the refrigeration cycle system like a heat pump.

  • For improving water quality and hish habitat environment the targeted instream flows added to the field measurement of low flow at each reach along Wonju Cheon are calculated by depth, velocity, and the present lower channel width with considering the landscape, aquatic environment, and natural ecological function. Target instream flow increasing ranged from $0.03m^3/s$ of upstream to $0.90m^3/s$ of downstream according to the proposed depths of 0.10m to 0.30m and velocity of 0.2m/s. The methods for target instream flow increasing are base flow increasing by watershed management, non polluted discharge inflow from valley and combined sewer by sewerage system modification, and discharges from upstream reservoirs and detention basins near-by stream. The possible increasing flow rates are $0.19m^3/s$ to $3.42m^3/s$ which are 1.4 to 2.5 times of low flow to be measured which are the equivalent targeted instream flows along Wonju Cheon. The BOD-based water quality improvement are analyzed by QUAL2E. The habitat suitability indices by PHABSIM of Zacco temmincki as target species at middle stream of Wonju Cheon improve significantly by low flow increasing, which is very important to improve water quality and fish habitat.

  • Objectives: Exercise with partially restricted blood flow is a low-load, low-intensity resistance training regimen which may have the potential to increase muscle strength in the obese, elderly and frail who are unable to do high-load training. Restricted blood flow exercise has also been shown to affect blood vessel function variably and can, therefore, contribute to blood vessel dysfunction. This pilot study tests the hypothesis that unilateral resistance training of the leg extensors with partially restricted blood flow increases muscle strength and decreases vascular autoregulation. Methods: The subjects were nine normotensive, overweight, young adult African-Americans with low cardiorespiratory fitness who underwent unilateral training of the quadriceps' femoris muscles with partially restricted blood flow at 30% of the 1-repetition maximum (1-RM) load for 3 weeks. The 1-RM load and post-occlusion blood flow to the lower leg (calf) were measured during reactive hyperemia. Results: The 1-RM load increased in the trained legs from $77{\pm}3$ to $84{\pm}4 kg$ (P < 0.05) in the absence of a significant effect on the 1-RM load in the contralateral untrained legs (P > 0.1). Post-occlusion blood flow decreased significantly in the trained legs from $19{\pm}2$ to $13{\pm}2mL{\cdot}min^{-1}{\cdot}dL^{-1}$ (P < 0.05) and marginally in the contralateral untrained legs from $18{\pm}2$ to $16{\pm}1mL{\cdot}min^{-1}{\cdot}dL^{-1}$ (P = 0.09). Changes in post-occlusion blood flow to the skin overlying the trained and the contralateral untrained muscles were not significant. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that restricted blood flow exercise, which results in significant gains in muscle strength, may produce decrements in endothelial dysfunction and vascular autoregulation. Future studies should determine whether pharmacopuncture plays a role in treatments for such blood vessel dysfunction.
