A Ni-W thin-film was synthesized by electrodeposition, and its corrosion resistance and electrical surface conductivity were investigated. Amount of tungsten in the Ni-W thin-film increased linearly with current density during the electrodeposition, and crack-free and low-crystalline Ni-21 at.%W coating layer was obtained. Corrosion resistances of the Ni-W thin-films were examined with an anodic polarization method and a storage test in a strong sulfuric acid solution. As a result, the Ni-21 at.%W thin-film exhibited the greatest corrosion resistance, and maintained the electrical surface conductivity even after the severe corrosion test, which could be applicable as a surface treatment for advanced metallic bipolar plates in fuel cell or redox flow battery systems.

Nanodiamond films were deposited on Si substrate by introducing a time dependent on/off modulation of $CH_4\;and\;O_2$ flows in a vertical-type microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system. Surface morphology and diamond quality of the film were investigated as a function of the on/off modulation time interval. The diamond nucleation density on the substrate was enhanced under low temperature and low pressure condition. In addition, the diamond nucleation density was enhanced by increasing the on/off modulation time interval. Enhanced diamond quality was noticeable under the condition of a longer on/off modulation time interval. It was suggested that the nanodiamond nuclei formed the cluster formation.

ZnTe films have been grown on (100) GaAs substrate with two representative problems. The one is lattice mismatch, the other is thermal expansion coefficients mismatch of ZnTe /GaAs. It claims here, the relationship of film thickness and defects distribution with (100) ZnTe/GaAs using hot wall epitaxy (HWE) growth was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It analyzed on the two-sort side using TEM with cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). Investigation into the nature and behavior of dislocations with dependence-thickness in (100) ZnTe/ (100) GaAs hetero-structures grown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This defects range from interface to 0.7 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was high density, due to the large lattice mismatch and thermal expansion coefficients. The defects of low density was range 0.7$\mu\textrm{m}$~1.8$\mu\textrm{m}$. In the thicker range than 1.8$\mu\textrm{m}$ was measured hardly defects.

Carbon films was grown on Si substrates using the method of electrolysis for methanol liquid. Deposition parameters for the growth of the carbon films were current density for the electrolysis. methanol liquid temperature and electrode spacing between anode and cathode. We examined electrical resistance and the surface morphology of carbon films formed under various conditions specified by deposition parameters. It was clarified that the high electrical resistance carbon films with smooth surface morphology are grown when a distance between the electrodes was relatively wider. We found that the electrical resistance in the films was independent of both current density and methanol liquid temperature for electrolysis. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistance in the low resistance carbon films was different from one obtained in graphite.

The ICP-CVD (inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition) process was applied to the deposition of $TiB_2$ films. For plasma generation, 13.56 MHz r.f. power was supplied to 2-turn Cu coil placed inside chamber. And the gas mixture of $TiCl_4,\;BCl_3,\;H_2$ and Ar was used for $TiB_2$ deposition. $TiB_2$ films with high hardness (<40 GPa) were obtained at extremely low deposition temperature $(250^{\circ}C)$, and the films hardness increased with ICP power and gas flow ratio of $TiCl_4/BCl_3$. The film structure was changed from (100) preferred orientation to random orientation with increasing RF power. It is supposed that the enhanced hardness of films was caused by a strong Ti-B chemical bonding of stoichiometric $TiB_2$ films and film densification induced by high density plasma.

Hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon (${\mu}c-Si:H$) films have attracted much attention as materials of the bottom-cells in Si thin film tandem photovoltaics due to their low bandgap and excellent stability against light soaking. However, in PECVD, the source gas $SiH_4$ must be highly diluted by $H_2$, which eventually results in low deposition rate. Moreover, it is known that high-rate ${\mu}c-Si:H$ growth is usually accompanied by a large number of dangling-bond (DB) defects in the resulting films, which act as recombination centers for photoexcited carriers, leading to a deterioration in the device performance. During film deposition, Si nanoparticles generated in $SiH_4$ discharges can be incorporated into films, and such incorporation may have effects on film properties depending on the size, structure, and volume fraction of nanoparticles incorporated into films. Here we report experimental results on the effects of nonoparticles incorporation at the different substrate temperature studied using a multi-hollow discharge plasma CVD method in which such incorporation can be significantly suppressed in upstream region by setting the gas flow velocity high enough to drive nanoparticles toward the downstream region. All experiments were performed with the multi-hollow discharge plasma CVD reactor at RT, 100, and $250^{\circ}C$, respectively. The gas flow rate ratio of $SiH_4$ to $H_2$ was 0.997. The total gas pressure P was kept at 2 Torr. The discharge frequency and power were 60 MHz, 180 W, respectively. Crystallinity Xc of resulting films was evaluated using Raman spectra. The defect densities of the films were measured with electron spin resonance (ESR). The defect density of fims deposited in the downstream region (with nonoparticles) is higher defect density than that in the upstream region (without nanoparticles) at low substrate temperature of RT and $100^{\circ}C$. This result indicates that nanoparticle incorporation can change considerably their film properties depending on the substrate temperature.

Nickel chloride coated protein chip plate was developed by using a spin coating method. The ability of histidine tagged protein adsorption was investigated at various solvents. The surface of plate has a large aggregated nickel complex with high density in water. However, the surface of plate has a very small size of aggregated nickel complex with low density in isopropanol. The ability of protein adsorption decreased as increasing the size of alkyl chain in various alcohol solvents. The mechanism on the ability of protein adsorption at the plate surface is discussed.
Titanium is widely used in dentistry for its low density, high strength, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. But it has a tendency of surface damage under circumstance of friction and impact for its low hardness of the surface. Coating is one of methods fir increasing surface hardness. Its effect is to improve surface physical characteristics without change of titanium. Diamond-like carbon and titanium nitride are known for its high hardness of the surface. So that this study was aimed at the wear test and the cytotoxicity test of the commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy which were deposited by diamond-like carbon film or titanium nitride film to acertain improvement of the surface hardness and the biocompatibility. A disk (25mm diameter, 2mm thickness) was made of commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy and these substrates were deposited by diamond-like carbon film or titanium nitride film. Diamond-like carbon film was deposited by the method of radiofrequency plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition and titanium nitride film was deposited by the method of reactive arc ion plating. Then these substrates were tested about wear characteristics by the pin-on-disk type wear tester in which ruby ball was used as a wear causer under the load of 32N, The fracture cycles were measured by rotating the substrates until their films were fractured. The wear volume was measured after 150 cycles and 3,000 cycles using surface profiler. The cytotoxicity test was peformed by the method of the MTT assay. The results were as follows : 1. In the results of the wear volume test, commercially pure titanium and titanium alloy which were coated by diamond-like carbon film or titanium nitride aim had higher resistance against wear than the substrates which were not coated by any films (P<0.05). 2. In the results of the fracture cycle test and the wear volume test, diamond-like carbon film had higher resistance against wear than titanium nitride film (P<0.05). 3. In both coatings of diamond-like carbon aim and titanium nitride film, Ti-6Al-4V alloy had higher resistance against wear than commercially pure titanium (P<0.05) 4. In the results of the cytotoxicity test, diamond-like carbon film and titanium nitride film had little cytotoxicity as like commercially pure titanium or Ti-6Al-4V alloy (P>0.05).

Aluminum alloys have poor corrosion resistance compared to the pure aluminum due to the additive elements. Thus, anodizing technology artificially generating thick oxide films are widely applied nowadays in order to improve corrosion resistance. Anodizing is one of the surface modification techniques, which is commercially applicable to a large surface at a low price. However, most studies up to now have focused on its commercialization with hardly any research on the assessment and improvement of the physical characteristics of the anodized films. Therefore, this study aims to select the optimum temperature of sulfuric electrolyte to perform excellent corrosion resistance in the harsh marine environment through electrochemical experiment in the sea water upon generating porous films by variating the temperatures of sulfuric electrolyte. To fabricate uniform porous film of 5083 aluminum alloy, we conducted electro-polishing under the 25 V at $5^{\circ}C$ condition for three minutes using mixed solution of ethanol (95 %) and perchloric (70 %) acid with volume ratio of 4:1. Afterward, the first step surface modification was performed using sulfuric acid as an electrolyte where the electrolyte concentration was maintained at 10 vol.% by using a jacketed beaker. For anode, 5083 aluminum alloy with thickness of 5 mm and size of $2cm{\times}2cm$ was used, while platinum electrode was used for cathode. The distance between the two was maintained at 3 cm. Afterward, the irregular oxide film that was created in the first step surface modification was removed. For the second step surface modification process (identical to the step 1), etching was performed using mixture of chromic acid (1.8 wt.%) and phosphoric acid (6 wt.%) at $60^{\circ}C$ temperature for 30 minutes. Anodic polarization test was performed at scan rate of 2 mV/s up to +3.0 V vs open circuit potential in natural seawater. Surface morphology was compared using 3D analysis microscope to observe the damage behavior. As a result, the case of surface modification presented a significantly lower corrosion current density than that without modification, indicating excellent corrosion resistance.

When the low heavy oil is using as fuel oil to the diesel engine, some problems such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance and heat resistance are happened in diesel engine's internal material, especially the adhesive wear of piston ring groove was occurred as a important problem. Therefore to prevent adhesive wear of its groove, the surface of its groove used to be electroplated with Chrominum and for its Chromium electroplating, Fe anode is being used until nowadays because of its Special shape. However in case of using Fe anode, there were some problems such as deterioation of solution, property of Chromium film, and condition of coation. In this paper Pb anode electroplated withPb to the steel plate was investigated for its Chromium electroplating for Pb's high corrosion resistance in acid solution, and Pb anode is not dissolved compared with Fe anode and deterioration degree of solution in case of Pb anode is smaller than that of Fe anode and also property of Chromium film was better than that of Fe anode. Moreover it was known that the optimum cathodic current density for Pb electroplating to steel plate as insoluable anode for Chromium coating of piston ring groove is 30mA/$cm^2$ by experimental results obtained.
