A low power contrast enhancement algorithm for OLED displays is proposed in this work. The proposed algorithm increases the contrast of the image based on a linear transformation function, while reducing the power consumption of OLED displays. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm extends the global contrast enhancement to local contrast enhancement using the block-based transformation function. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the power consumption, while enhancing the contrast of an input image.

In this paper, an advanced histogram equalization algorithm for contrast enhancement is presented. Histogram equalization is the most popular algorithm. Global histogram equalization is simple and fast, but its contrast enhancement power is relatively low. Local histogram equalization, on the other hand, can enhance overall contrast more effectively, but the complexity of computation required is very high. In this paper, a low pass filter type mask is used to get a sub-block histogram equalization function to more simply produce the high contrast. The low pass filter type mask is realized by partially overlapped sub-block histogram equalization (POSHE). With the proposed method. the computation overhead is reduced by a factor of about one hundred compared to that of local histogram equalization while still achieving high contrast.
This paper presents the image contrast enhancement technique suitable for local dimming backlight of small-sized mobile display while achieving the reduction of the power consumption. In addition to the large-sized TFT-LCD, small-sized one has adopted LED for backlight. Since, conventionally, LED was mounted on the side edge of a display panel, global dimming method has been widely used. However, recently, new advanced method of local dimming by placing the LED to the backside of the display panel and it raised the necessity of sub-blocked processing after partitioning the target image. When the sub-blocked image has low brightness, the supply current of a backlight LED is reduced, which gives both enhancement of contrast ratio and power consumption reduction. In this paper, we propose simple and improved image enhancement algorithm suitable for the small-sized mobile display. After partitioning the input image by equal sized blocks and analyzing the pixel information in each block, we realize the primary contrast enhancement by independently processing the sub-blocks using the information such as histogram, mean, and standard deviation values of luminance(Y) component. And then resulting information is transferred to each backlight control unit for local dimming to realize the secondary contrast enhancement as well as reduction of power consumption.

In thin-film transistor liquid-crystal displays (TFT-LCDs), which are most commonly used in mobile devices, the backlight accounts for about 70% of the power consumption. Therefore, most low-power-related studies focus on realizing power savings through backlight dimming. Image compensation is performed to mitigate the visual distortion caused by the backlight dimming. Therefore, popular techniques include pixel compensation for brightness recovery and contrast enhancement, such as histogram equalization. However, existing pixel compensation techniques often have limitations with respect to blur owing to the pixel saturation phenomenon, or because contrast enhancement cannot adequately satisfy the human visual system (HVS). To overcome these, in this study, we propose a novel dimming technique to achieve both power saving and HVS-awareness by combining the pixel compensation and histogram specifications, which convert the original cumulative density function (CDF) by designing and using the desired CDF of an image. Because the process of obtaining the desired CDF is customized to consider image characteristics, histogram specification is found to achieve better HVS-awareness than histogram equalization. For the experiments, we employ the LIVE image database, and we use the structural similarity (SSIM) index to measure the degree of visual satisfaction. The experimental results show that the proposed technique achieves up to 15.9% increase in the SSIM index compared with existing dimming techniques that use pixel compensation and histogram equalization in the case of the same low-power ratio. Further, the results indicate that it achieves improved HVS-awareness and increased power saving concurrently compared with previous techniques.
A new electrode structure in a plasma display panel was designed in a way to increase the bright room contrast ratio (BRCR). The area of the black matrix pattern to get a low reflection from the panel surface was enlarged using the new electrode design concept. The electrical characteristics such as firing voltage, voltage margin and power consumption were measured. The luminance of the panel was measured and the luminous efficiency was calculated. It was found that the new electrode structure was very effective to enhance the BRCR.

In this study, the power enhancement potential of a Rankine power cycle by transcritical operation was investigated by comparing the power of an HFC-134a subcritical cycle with that of an HFC-125 transcritical cycle, for a low-grade heat source with a temperature of about $100^{\circ}C$. For a fair comparison using different working fluids, each cycle was optimized by three design parameters from the viewpoint of power. In contrast to conventional approaches, the working fluid's heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics were considered in the present approach, with the aim of ensuring a more realistic comparison. The results showed that the HFC-125 transcritical cycle yields 9.4% more power than does the HFC-134a subcritical cycle under the simulation conditions considered in the present study.

Thermal imaging is mainly used in military equipment required for night observation. In particular, technologies of uncooled thermal imaging detectors are being developed as applied to low-cost night observation system. Many system integrators require different specifications of the uncooled thermal imaging camera but their development time is short. In this approach, EOSYSTEM has developed a small size, TEC-less uncooled thermal imaging camera module with $32{\times}32mm$ size and low power consumption. Both domestic detector and import detector are applied to the EOSYSTEM's thermal imaging camera module. The camera module contains efficient infrared image processing algorithms including : Temperature compensation non-uniformity correction, Bad/Dead pixel replacement, Column noise removal, Contrast/Edge enhancement algorithms providing stable and low residual non-uniformity infrared image.

Solid-state fault current limiters (SSFCL) in power systems are alternative devices to limit prospective short circuit currents from reaching lower levels. Fault current limiters (FCL) can be classified into two categories: R-type (resistive) FCLs and L-type (inductive) FCLs. L-type FCL uses an inductor to limit fault level and is more efficient in suppressing voltage drop during a fault. In contrast, R-type FCL is constructed with a resistance and is more effective in consuming the acceleration energy of generators during a fault. Both functions enhance the transient stability of the power system. In the present paper, a novel SSFCL is proposed to enhance power system transient stability and power quality. The proposed SSFCL uses both functions of an L-type and R-type FCL. SSFCL consists of four diodes, one self-turn-off IGCT, a current-limiting by-pass inductor (L), and a variable resistance parallel with an inductor for improvement of power system stability and prevention of over-voltage across SSFCL. The main advantages of the proposed SSFCL are the simplicity of its structure and control, low steady-state impedance, fast response, and the existence of R-type and Ltype impedances during the fault, all of which improve power system stability and power quality. Simulations are accomplished in PSCAD/EMTDC.

In this study, we have investigated highly efficient nanoscale surface corrugated light emitting diodes (LEDs) for the enhancement of light extraction efficiency (LEE) of nitride semiconductor LEDs. Nanoscale indium tin oxide (ITO) surface corrugations are fabricated by using the conformal nanoimprint technique; it was possible to observe an enhancement of LEE for the ITO surface corrugated LEDs. By incorporating this novel method, we determined that the total output power of the surface corrugated LEDs were enhanced by 45.6% for patterned sapphire substrate LEDs and by 41.9% for flat c-plane substrate LEDs. The enhancement of LEE through nanoscale surface corrugations was studied using 3-dimensional Finite Different Time Domain (FDTD) calculation. From the FDTD calculations, we were able to separate the light extraction from the top and bottom sides of device. This process revealed that light extraction from the top and bottom sides of a device strongly depends on the substrate and the surface corrugation. We found that enhanced LEE could be understood through the mechanism of enhanced light transmission due to refractive index matching and the increase of light scattering from the corrugated surface. LEE calculations for the encapsulated LEDs devices also revealed that low LEE enhancement is expected after encapsulation due to the reduction of the refractive index contrast.
