In order to understand the temporal variations and species composition of tintinnids, at two stations of the Korea Strait, this study was carried out from January to December 2007 (n=17). Fifty-one species from 22 genera were encountered: 27 neritic species (9 genera) and 24 oceanic species (14 genera). The species composition was different between two stations, and neritic species frequently appeared at St. 1, while oceanic species more frequently appeared at St. 2. According to the frequency in appearance of species, the most dominant species were neritic species such as Stenosemella nivalis and S. pacifica, that appeared in all seasons. Also, Acanthostomella norvegica, Amphorellopsis acuta, Epilpocyloides ralumensis, Protorhabdonella curta and other many oceanic species appeared intensively during the low salinity (${\leqq}33\;psu$) and high water temperature (${\geqq}24^{\circ}C$) period (July~October). The abundance of tintinnids ranged from 0 to 1,845 cells $L^{-1}$. It was higher in the seasons (summer and autumn) of low salinity and high water temperature than in other seasons. The abundance was relatively higher at St. 1 than at St. 2. On the basis of correlation and multiple regression analyses, the tintinnid abundance was not correlated with chi-a, but significantly correlated with water temperature and salinity, suggesting to be the primary abiotic factors influencing the abundance. This study suggests that the complex hydrographic conditions of the study area might influence the temporal distribution and species composition of tintinnids.

We have analyzed a long term data of marine environments, red tide information and meteorology acquired by NFRDI and KMA, in order to understand the characteristics of marine environments in the Narodo coastal waters which is known to be the first outbreak region of Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms. During the period of from 1992 to 2007, Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms have first occurred more often in August. However, the outbreak time of the blooms tended to be earlier annually, and in addition, the surface salinity also had a tendency to increase. Consequently, it suggested that there might be a relationship between the transition of the outbreak time of the blooms and salinity. On the other hand, insolation was relatively rich but precipitation was relatively scarce in Gohung Province, compared to Yeosu or Tongyeong, when Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms first occur in Narodo coastal waters. Average water temperature and salinity in August in Narodo coastal waters were all higher than those in Gamak and Jinhae bays, suggesting that Narodo coastal waters are a region of relatively high water temperature and high salinity. Also, concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll- a were significantly low than those in Jinhae Bay, which is known to be a eutrophicated region, while the overall water quality seemed to be similar to Gamak Bay. The results of PCA(Principal Component Analysis) proved that insolation and water temperature are the most important factors for the outbreak of Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms in Narodo coastal waters while concentrations of COD and dissolved oxygen are secondly important. Furthermore, typhoons also appeared to be one of most important factors for the outbreak of Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms.
To investigate the relationships between ocean environmental characteristics and thechange of the catch, we analyzed various environmental factors such as mean temperature, salinity, current vectors, lunar day and wind vectors from 1995 to 1996 and the catch fluctuation of Hanlim set net from 1994 to 1996. The results are as follow ; 1) The proportion of fishes caught in Hanlim set net is highest for horse mackere1 ($69.2\%$) and is followed by common mackerel ($18.4\%$), hair tail ($5.6\%$), squid ($2.7\%$) and rabbit fish ($1.4\%$) in order. Two peaks in the monthly catch appeared in June and October in the operation period of May- December. 2) The flow direction was northward in flood time and southeastward in ebb time around the Hanlim set net. Thus, the vortical mixing of sea water was active and continued for more than 3 hours. In addition, mean daily temperature was low due to the presence of middle and bottom water in offshore. Increase in salinity or high salinity of sea water provides a favorable condition for catches of fishes. Catches in the first quarter and the last quarter of the moon were larger than that in full moon and the last of the month. In particular, when south or southeasterly wind velocity reaches about 3$\~$6.5 m/s, the possibility of catches increases.
Measurements of volumetric water content and saturation of porous media are very important factors in understanding the physical characteristics of soil, groundwater recharge by rainfall, pollutant movement, and slope failure. To measure such physical parameters, a permittivity method using electromagnetic wave is applied and use is made of the special permittivity response of understand to water and ethanol. In particular, the estimation is required because permittivity is influenced by the nature of the underground environment. In this study, we carried out experiments on the relative dependency of soil density, temperature and salinity of standard sand and granitic weathered soil using FDR-V system (Frequency domain reflectometry with vector network analyzer) within a frequency range of 1 - 18 GHz. The results of the study showed that the dielectric constants of standard sand and granitic weathered soil increased with increased volumetric water content of soil. However, the dependency of soil density was found to be a little low. Changes of dielectric constant with temperature appeared definitely in the real part of 1 GHz. That is, the dielectric constant of real part at 1 GHz of water and standard sand increased with the rise of temperature. However, ethanol showed decreased tendency. The study also showed that dielectric constant increased with increase in salinity at imaginary part of 1 GHz. It could be concluded from this study FDR-V system can adequately measure the physical properties of soil and the degree of salinity concentration of porous media within 1 GHz frequency range using dielectric constant.
The Asan Bay, which has semi-diurnal tide with macro-tidal range, is affected by both freshwater discharge from the sluice gates in the sea dikes and tidal seawater inputs from the Yellow sea. Understanding water quality change in response to tides is important since tides can impact the short-term variations in physical and chemical water properties as well as the response of biological properties. The diel variations in water quality were seasonally investigated at 2 hour intervals from a fixed station in the Asan Bay. In the results, water temperature and salinity consistently fluctuated in phase or out of phase with tidal height. Especially salinity was positively correlated with tidal height. The concentrations of total suspended solids were higher in the bottom water than in the surface and fluctuated greatly over the tidal cycle recording higher values at low tide than at high tide. Nitrite+nitrate levels also fluctuated out of phase with tidal height and correlated negatively with tidal height. Other nutrients also showed a similar pattern. The pattern was distinct in July when freshwater was discharged before the field sampling. The concentrations of organic materials, total nitrogen and total phosphorus greatly fluctuated over the tidal cycle and were generally out of phase with tidal height. Most materials except particulate organic forms were correlated with salinity indicating that freshwater inputs were sources for the materials similarly to the dissolved inorganic nutrients. The results suggest that water quality (except dissolved oxygen and pH) and nutrients including organic materials was largely affected by tides in the Asan Bay.

Perkinsus sp. has been identified as responsible organism for the decrease in Manil clam production along the west and south coast of Korea. Monthly investigation on infection intensity and pathology of Perkinsus infected Manila clam population was carried out in Komsoe Bay located in the west coast during February and December 1999. About one hundred clams were collected each month for the analysis. Infected clams were incubated in fluid thioglycollate media over a week, stained with iodine solution, digested with 2M NaOH and the number of Perkinsus present in an individual recorded. Histological slides were also prepared from infected clams and their pathologic symptoms were examined using a microscope. Trophozoites of Perkinsus sp. were dominantly distributed on gills and epithelia of digestive glands however a few numbers could be detected at siphons and foot tissues. Heavily infected clams often exhibited white spots on mantle and foot tissues due to the inflammatory reaction of the hemocytes, forming nodules. Trophozoites were also found along the connective tissues of follicles during spawning season indicating that Perkinsus sp. may disturb reproduction of the clam. Total number of Perkinsus sp. in an individual clam varied from none to 9, 550, 000 with a monthly mean of 279, 663 to 2, 198, 558 during the course of study. The number of Perkinsus sp. in the clam was found to lowest durin July and August when unusually low salinity was recorded in this area due to the heavy rain. Highest monthly infection intensity in terms of total number of Perkinsus sp. i clam was observed in February, when water temperature recorded as lowest during the study. Small size of clams with shell length of ten mm or less were not infected with Perkinsus sp. It was concluded that Perkinsus infection in Manila clam is in pa controlled by changes in salinity and clam growth; low salinity environment minimize infection intensity while tile clams get more Perkinsus as they grow.
To investigate the relationships between ocean environmental characteristics, the time-series data of temperature and salinity observed at a station near at Hanlim set net in 1995 and 1996 are analyzed, and the results are as follow ; 1. In hanlim set net, the diurnal range of temperature and salinity variation in summer is very large and the amplitude of short-period fluctuation of temperature and salinity is very large. That is, not only the water of the middle and bottom layers (low temperature and high salinity) but also the coalstal water (high temperature and low salinity) appears alternatively depending on the current direction 2. from the result of mooring for 22 days in Hanlim set net, the mean speed and direction of tidal current in neap tide were 9.1 cm/sec and south westward in ebb time, and 11.6 cm/sec and north or northeastward in flood time, respectively. The highest speed of the current was 15cm/sec in ebb time, and 22.6 cm/sec in flood time. The mean speed and direction of tidal current in spring tide were 10.4 cm/sec, and southwestward in ebb time, and 12.3 cm/sec, and north or northestward in flood time, respectively. The highest speed of the current was 19.4 cm/sec in ebb time, and 20 cm/sec in flood time respectively. The mean speed of the current in flood time was larger than that in ebb time. The velocity vector along the major axis of semidiurnal tide ($M_2$) component was 1.5 times larger than that of diurnal tide ($K_1$), The major directions of two compornants were northwestward and east-southeastward and residiual current were 3.25 cm/sec and northwestward-directed. Result of TGPS Buoy tracer for 3 days between Biyang-Do and Chgui-Do showed that the mean speed was 1.6 knot in ebb time and 1.3 knot in flood time. Direction of tidal was southwestward in ebb time and northeastward in flood time respectively. The maximum current speed was 4.8 knot in ebb time and 3.7 knot in flood time respectively. The mean speed and direction of tidal in of offshore were 1.7 knot and northwestward in flood time. The residual current appeared 0.3 knot northeastward.

We researched the fauna restoration of 5 urban streams in Ulsan established as ecological streams by improving water quality and river environment. The fauna inhabitation were compared according to the conditions of geometrical feature such as river width, low-water channel width, ect and water quality, water volumn, inland and forceland. The Mugeo cheon has clearly shown the fauna restoration effects resulting from supplying sustainable maintenance water and wastewater treatments. In the Yaksa cheon, on the other hand, the restoration effects were low due to the inflow of wastewater and sledges in some part of stream ever though the improvement of water quality. The Yeocheon cheon was found to have disadvantage on the ecological inhabitations due to supplying the maintenance water with highly concentrated salinity. The fauna restoration effect of the Meongjeong cheon was low due to the inflow of wastewater to the down stream. Therefore by supplying the maintenance water and improving the connection to the Taehwa river at the estuary, better restoration effects could be observed. In the Cheokgwa cheon, which is almost a natural river, the ecological integrity of the fauna population has been maintained quite well. It was concluded that the project to transform urban streams into ecological streams should focus on not only keeping water volume and quality but also maintaining favorable conditions for the migration and settlement of animal species close to the natural state.

Seawater desalination is a technology through which salt and other constituents are removed from seawater to produce fresh water. While a significant amount of fresh water is produced, the desalination process is limited by the generation of concentrated brine with a higher salinity than seawater; this imposes environmental and economic problems. In this study, characteristics of seawater from three different locations in South Korea were analyzed to evaluate the feasibility of crystallization to seawater desalination. Organic and inorganic substances participating in crystal formation during concentration were identified. Then, prediction and economic feasibility analysis were conducted on the actual water flux and obtainable salt resources (i.e. Na2SO4) using membrane distillation and energy-saving crystallizer based on multi-stage flash (MSF-Cr). The seawater showed a rather low salinity (29.9~34.4 g/L) and different composition ratios depending on the location. At high concentrations, it was possible to observe the participation of dissolved organic matter and various ionic substances in crystalization. When crystallized, materials capable of forming various crystals are expected. However, it seems that different salt concentrations should be considered for each location. When the model developed using the Aspen Plus modular was applied in Korean seawater conditions, relatively high economic feasibility was confirmed in the MSF-Cr. The results of this study will help solve the environmental and economic problems of concentrated brine from seawater desalination.
The present study was designed to clarify aspects of the annual reproductive cycle of the fresh water mitten crab, Eriocheir japonicus inhabiting Sumjin river, and to determine the adequate conditions of temperature, photoperiod and salinity on the gonadal maturation and breeding of adult female crabs. Based on the seasonal changes of GSIs and gonadal histology of adult crabs, the annual reproductive cycle could be divided into 4 periods as follows: previtellogenesis period (from September to October) when GSIs were low value and ovaries had oocytes in previtellogenesis stage and meiotic prophase stage; maturing period (from November to March of the next year) when GSIs increased gradually and ovarian oocytes accumulated yolk globules; spawning period (from April to June) when high value of GSI of female was kept and ovigerous female appeared; resting period (from July to August) when GSIs decreased rapidly, and vitellogenic oocytes degenerated. Gonadal maturation was influenced by water temperature, but not photoperiod and salinity. GSI more increased in experimental regime of $18^{\circ}C$ than that of $10^{\circ}C$ regardless of photoperiod conditions (12L12D and 15L9D). However, in $26^{\circ}C$ regime of both photoperiod conditions, the value of GSI was not changed, and vitellogenic oocytes were not observed. Spawning was considerably influenced by water temperatures and salinities regardless of photoperiods. Vitellogenic female crabs did not spawn at $10^{\circ}C$ in any salinity conditions. However, at $18^{\circ}C$ and $26^{\circ}C$, over a half of rearing female crabs spawned in condition of 30% sea water (salinity 9.6%o) and 60% sea water (salinity 19.2%o), while no female spawned in freshwater condition (salinity 0.0%o).
