Recent years have witnessed the use of micro shock tube in various engineering applications like micro combustion, micro propulsion, particle delivery systems etc. The flow characteristics occurring in the micro shock tube shows a considerable deviation from that of well established conventional macro shock tube due to very low Reynolds number and high Knudsen number effects. Also the diaphragm rupture process, which is considered to be instantaneous process in many of the conventional shock tubes, will be crucial for micro shock tubes in determining the near diaphragm flow field and shock formation. In the present study, an axi-symmetric CFD method has been applied to simulate the micro shock tube, with Maxwell's slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions. The effects of finite diaphragm rupture process on the flow field and the shock formation was investigated, in detail. The results show that the shock strength attenuates rapidly as it propagates through micro shock tubes.

In the present study, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, together with the equations of the $k-{\varepsilon}$ model of turbulence, were solved numerically in a general body-fitted coordinate system for three-dimensional turbulent flows around the six basic shapes of the magnetically levitated train(MAGLEV). The numerical computations were conducted on the MAGLEV model configurations to provide information on shapes of this type very near the elevated track at a constant Reynolds number of $1.48{\times}10^{6}$ based on the body length. The coordinate system was generated by numerically solving a set of Poisson equations. The convective transport equations were discretized using the finite-analytic scheme which employed analytic solutions of the locally-linearized equations. A time marching algorithm was employed to enable future extensions to be made to handle unsteady and fully-elliptic problems. The pressure-velocity coupling was treated with the SIMPLER-algorithm. Of particular interests were wall effect by the elevated track on the aerodynamic forces and flow characteristics of the six models calculated. The results indicated that the half-circle configuration with extended sides and with smooth curvature of sides was desirable because of the low aerodynamic forces and pitching moment. And it was found that the separation bubble was occured at wake region in near the elevated track.

In the present study, the model-scale Propeller Open Water (POW) tests for the propeller of 176K bulk carrier and 8600TEU container ship were conducted through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. In order to solve the incompressible viscous flow field, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RaNS) equations were employed as the governing equations. The γ-Reθ(gamma-Re-theta) transition model combined with the SST k-ωturbulence model was introduced to describe the laminar-turbulence transition considering the low Reynolds number of model-scale. Firstly, the flow simulation developing over a flat plate was performed to verify the transition modeling, in which the wall shear stresses were compared with experiments and other numerical results. Then, to investigate the effect of the model, the CFD simulation for the POW test was performed and the simulated propeller performance was validated through comparison with the experiment conducted at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO).

Wind loads on low-rise buildings in general and residential homes in particular can differ significantly depending upon the laboratory in which they were measured. The differences are due in large part to inadequate simulations of the low-frequency content of atmospheric velocity fluctuations in the laboratory and to the small scale of the models used for the measurements. The imperfect spatial coherence of the low frequency velocity fluctuations results in reductions of the overall wind effects with respect to the case of perfectly coherent flows. For large buildings those reductions are significant. However, for buildings with sufficiently small dimensions (e.g., residential homes) the reductions are relatively small. A technique is proposed for simulating the effect of low-frequency flow fluctuations on such buildings more effectively from the point of view of testing accuracy and repeatability than is currently the case. Experimental results are presented that validate the proposed technique. The technique eliminates a major cause of discrepancies among measurements conducted in different laboratories. In addition, the technique allows the use of considerably larger model scales than are possible in conventional testing. This makes it possible to model architectural details, and improves Reynolds number similarity. The technique is applicable to wind tunnels and large scale open jet facilities, and can help to standardize flow simulations for testing residential homes as well as significantly improving testing accuracy and repeatability. The work reported in this paper is a first step in developing the proposed technique. Additional tests are planned to further refine the technique and test the range of its applicability.

Applicability of the pressure gradient method which is formulated based on pressure gradient is verified against turbulent flow analysis. In the pressure gradient method, pressure gradient instead of pressure itself is obtained using continuity constraint. Since correct pressure gradient is found only when mass conservation is satisfied, pressure gradient method can reflect physics of flow field properly The pressure gradient method is formulated with semi-staggered grid system which locates each primitive variables on the same grid point but evaluates pressure gradient in-between. This grid system ensures easy programming and reflection of correct physics in analysis. For verifying applicability of this method, the pressure gradient method is applied to turbulent flow analysis with low Reynolds number $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model. Turbulent flows include fully developed channel flow, backward-facing step flow, and conical diffuser flow. Prediction results show that the pressure gradient method can be applied to turbulent flow analysis. However, the pressure gradient method requires somewhat long computation time. Proper way to find optimum under-relaxation factor, $\gamma$, is also need to be developed.
This study aims at validating simulations of the forced and freely vibrating cylinders at Reynolds number of approximately 500 in order to identify the capability of the CFD code, and to establish the analysis process of the vortex-induced vibration (VIV). The direct numerical and large eddy simulations were employed to resolve the various length scales of the vortices, and the morphing technique was used to consider a motion of the circular cylinder. For the forced vibration case, both in- and anti-phase VIV processes were observed regarding the frequency ratio. Namely, when the frequency ratio approaches to unity, the synchronization/lock-in process occurs, leading to substantial increases in drag and lift coefficients. This is strongly linked with the switch in timing of the vortex formation, and this physical tendency is consistent with that of Blackburn and Henderson (J. Fluid Mech., 1999, 385, 255-286) as well as force coefficients. For the free oscillation case, the mass and damping ratio of 50.8 and 0.0024 were considered based on the study of Blackburn et al. (J. Fluid Struct., 2000, 15, 481-488) to allow the direct comparison of simulation results. The simulation results for a peak amplitude of the cylinder and a shedding mode are reasonably comparable to that of Blackburn et al. (2000). Consequently, based on aforementioned results, it can be concluded that numerical methods were successfully validated and the calculation procedure was well established for VIV analysis with reasonable results.
In this study, five different Gochujang (a traditional Korean sauce prepared using fermented red pepper paste) sauces were heated at $100^{\circ}C$ for 5 min using a continuous ohmic heating system. Ohmic heating yielded greater reduction in microbial counts (90-95% reduction) than did conventional heating (65-75% reduction). The sterilization effect of the continuous ohmic heater increased with increasing sample flow rate and decreasing Reynolds number inside the pipe. Low-viscosity samples had higher electrical conductivity and were better suited for ohmic heating than were high-viscosity samples. The color and texture were also satisfactorily maintained after ohmic heating. Compared with conventional heating, ohmic heating provided rapid and uniform heating, which is more suitable for aseptic thermal processing of viscous foods.
The gridless (or meshfree) methods, such as MPS, SPH, FPM an so forth, are feasible and robust for the problems with moving boundary and/or complicated boundary shapes, because these methods do not need to generate a grid system. In this study, a gridless solver, which is based on the combination of moving least square interpolations on a cloud of points with point collocation for evaluating the derivatives of governing equations, is presented for two-dimensional unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes problem in the low Reynolds number. A MAC-type algorithm was adopted and the Poission equation for the pressure was solved by successively in the moving least square sense. Some weighing functions were tested in order to investigate the up-winding effect for the convection term. Some typical problems were solved by the presented solver for the validation and the results obtained were compared with analytic solutions and the numerical results by conventional CFD methods, such as FVM.

An experimental investigation was conducted to enhance the heat/mass transfer for impingement/effusion cooling system when the initial crossflow was formed. For the improvement of heat transfer, the circular guide is installed on the injection hole. At the fixed jet Reynolds number of 10,000, the measurements were carried out for blowing ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.5. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate are measured using a naphthalene sublimation method. The result presents that the circular guide protects the injected jet from the initial crossflow, increasing the heat/mass transfer. The heat transfer of stagnation region is hardly changed regardless of the blowing ratio. The secondary peak is obviously formed by flow transition to turbulent flow. At high blowing ratio of 1.5, the circular guide produces $26{\sim}30%$ augmentation on the averaged heat/mass transfer while the case without circular guide leads to the low and non-uniform heat/mass transfer. With the increased heat/mass transfer, the installation of circular guide is accompanied by the increase of pressure loss in the channel. However, the pressure drop caused by the circular guide is lower than that for other cooling technique with the circular pin fin.

Steady state turbulent airflow and unsteady characteristics of generation, transportation, and recovery behavior of contaminate particles in the simplified 2 dimensional Vertical Laminar Flow (VLF) type clean room was numerically simulated using the low Reynolds number k-over bar.epsilon- turbulent model. Characteristics of airflow in VLF type clean room are greatly affected by the recirculation zone around working surface. The recirculation zone must be considered at the time of clean room design because the recirculation zone whose area increases with increment of inlet velocity exerts bad influence upon the performance of clean room in terms of particle contamination. The location of maximum particle concentration changes from the location of particle source to the recirculation zone, while averaged particle concentration is reduced exponentially with time. Recovery time of clean room with spontaneous particle generation source is inversely proportional to inlet velocity. We introduce nondimensionalized recovery time through the dimensional analysis, which can indicates the general performance of clean room with design structure change. It was identified that .tau. is independent of inlet velocity and background concentration. Therefore .tau. can be the simple factor to compare the different structure of clean room in terms of dynamic response to contamination and becomes larger with better structure of clean room.
