  • This numerical study focuses on the analysis of fume particle dispersion characteristics over the surface of target workpiece in laser micro-hole machining process. The effects of oblique stagnation flow over fume generating machining point are examined by carrying out a series of three-dimensional random particle simulations along with probabilistic particle generation model and particle drag correlation of low Reynolds number. Present computational model of fume particle dispersion is found to be capable of assessing and quantifying the fume particle contamination in precision hole machining which may influenced by different types of air flow patterns and their flow intensity. The particle size dependence on dispersion distance of fume particles from laser machining point is significant and the effects of increasing flow oblique angle are shown quite differently when slot blowing or slot suction flows are applied in micro-hole machining.

  • A numerical study on the quantitative analogy between the fully developed turbulent flow in a straight square duct rotating about an axis perpendicular to that of the duct and that in a stationary curved duct of square cross-section is carried out. In order to clarify the similarity of the two flows, dimensionless parameters K(sub)TR=Re(sup)1/4/√Ro and Rossby number, Ro, in a rotating straight duct flow were used as a set corresponding to K(sub)TC=Re(sup)1/4/√λ and curvature ratio, λ, in a stationary curved duct flow so that they have the same dynamical meaning as those of the fully developed laminar flows. For the large values of Ro or λ, it is shown that the flow field satisfies the asymptotic invariance property, that is, there are strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as flow patterns and friction factors for the same values of K(sub)TR and K(sub)TC.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics over Micro Aerial Vehicle(MAV) in low Reynolds number regime are numerically studied using 3-D unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver with single partitioning method for multi-block grid. For more efficient computation of unsteady flows, this flow solver is parallel-implemented with MPl(Message Passing Interface) programming method. Firstly, MAV wing with not complex geometry is considered and then, we analyze aerodynamic characteristics over full MAV configuration varying the angle of attack. Present computational results show a better agreement with the experimental data by MACDL(Micro Aerodynamic Control and Design Lab.), Seoul National University. We can also find the conceptually designed MAV by MACDL has the static stability.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics for two-dimensional cyclic motion profile of flapping airfoil in low Reynolds number flows are investigated. Plunging motion and lead-lag motion in the two dimensional space with different plunging and lead-lag amplitudes are combined to cyclic motion profile and the flow around the airfoil is simulated. Present result shows that the improved aerodynamic efficiencies for a given flapping airfoil by adding periodic lead-lag motion of airfoil rather than the pure plunging case. The thrust coefficient and lift coefficient are compared with each cycle during the flapping period and aerodynamic characteristics are obtained on upstroke motion and downstroke motion.

  • A theoretical and numerical investigation is performed on the flow in a micronozzle for precision-controlled seal dispenser. The working fluid is a highly viscous epoxy used as sealant in producing LCD panels, which contains a number of tiny solid spacers. Flow analysis is conducted in order to achieve the optimal design oj internal geometry of a nozzle. A simplified design analysis methodology is proposed for predicting the flow in the nozzle based on the assumption that the Reynolds number is much less than O(1). The parallel numerical computations are performed by using a CFD package FLUENT. Comparison discloses that the theoretical model gives a good prediction on the distribution of pressure and wall shear stress in the nozzle. However, the theoretical model has a difficulty in predicting the maximum wall shear stress as found in a limited region near edge by numerical computation. The theoretical and numerical simulations provide the good guideline for designing a dispensing micronozzle.

  • In this study, the flow and combustion characteristics of flat flame burner with twirler were investigated. There are several factors that define the characteristics of burner. Among them, the experiments was focused on swirl effect by four types of twirler in terms of flow structure, distribution of temperature and emission characteristics. In PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) experiment, the less of swirl number, axial flow is dominant at the center. As swirl number increases, the flow develops along the burner tile and backward flow becomes stronger at center. From the combustion characteristics, as long as combustion load increases, blow-off limit was improved. But at the higher swirl number, the limit is decreased. At swirl number 0, the temperature is shown typical distribution of long flame burner. but swirl number increases, the temperature distribution is uniform in front of round tile. Therefore, the temperature distribution is coincided with flow structure. As excess air ratio increases, NO concentrations are high. But high swirl number gives rise to become low NO concentrations. The flame characteristics are comprised in wrinkled laminar-flame regime according to turbulence Reynolds number(Rel) and Damkohler number(Da).

  • Insect and birds in nature flap their wings to generate fluid dynamic forces that are required for the locomotion. Most of the previous published papers discussed mainly on the effect of flapping parameters such as flapping frequency and amplitude on the thrust at a fixed Reynolds number. However, it is not much known on the values of the flapping parameters that the flapping wing requires to generate the thrust at the low Reynolds number flow. In this paper, the onset of the thrust generation is investigated using the lattice Boltzmann method. The wake patterns and velocity profiles behind a flat plate in heaving oscillation are investigated for the heaving amplitude of 0.5C. The time-averaged thrust coefficient value is investigated by changing the reduced frequency from 0.125 to 3.0 for three values of heaving amplitude (h/C=0.25, 0.325, 0.50). It is also found that the critical Strouhal number over which the flat plate starts to produce the thrust is around 0.1 and the thrust is an exponential function of the Strouhal number.

  • Heat transfer and pressure drop measurements are made on low integral-fin tubes in turbulent water flow condition. The integral-fin tubes investigated in this paper are nominally 19mm in diameter. Eight tubes have been used with trapezoidally shaped integral-fins having fin density from 748 to 1654 fpm and 10, 30 grooves. Plain tube having same diameter as finned tube is also tested for comparison. Experiments are carried out using R-11 as working fluid. The refrigerant condensates at a saturation state of $30^{\circ}C$ on the outside tube surface cooled by coolant. The amount of noncondensable gases present in the test loop is reduced to a negligible value by repeated purging. For a given heat input to the boiler and given cooling water flow rate, all test data are taken on steady state. The heat transfer loop is used for testing single long tubes and cooling water is pumped from a storage tank through filters and flowmeters to the horizontal test section where it is heated by steam condensing on the outside of the tube. The pressure drop across the test section is measured by means of pressure gauge and manometer. Each tube tested is cleaned with sodium dichromate pickling solution and well rinsed with water prior to installation in the test section. The results obtained in this study is as follows : 1. Based on inside diameter and nominal inside area, heat transfer of finned tube is enhanced up to 4 times as that of a plain tube at constant Reynolds number and up to 2 times at constant pumping power. 2. Friction factors are up to 1.6~2.1 times those of plain tube. 3. At a given Reynolds number, Nusselt number decrease with increasing pitch to diameter. 4. The constant pumping power ratio for low integral-fin tubes increase directly with the effective area to the nominal area ratio, and with the effective area diameter ratio.

  • A laboratory experiment is conducted is to investigate the behaviour of a low-mass-ratio and high aspect ratio flexible cylinder under vortex-induced vibration (VIV). A flexible cylinder with aspect ratio of 100 and mass ratio of 1.17 is towed horizontally to generate uniform flow profile. The range of Reynolds number is from 1380 to 13800. Vibration amplitude, in-line and cross-flow frequency response, amplitude trajectory, mean tension variation and hydrodynamic force coefficients are analyzed based on the measurement from strain gauges, load cell and CCD camera. Experimental results indicate that broad-banded lock-in region is found for the cylinder with a small Strouhal number. The frequency switches in the present study indicates the change of the VIV phenomenon. The hydrodynamic force responses provide more understanding on the VIV of a low mass ratio cylinder.

  • The movements of small particles distributed uniformly in a steady flow in rectangular chambers having inlets and outlets were simulated numerically. Low Reynolds number turbulent model with a two-equation ($k-{\varepsilon}$) which describes the turbulent characteristics was applied to predict the air flow pattern and particles movements under the condition of the various locations and size of ducts. The calculation results show that the prediction of recirculation zone and stagnation point of flow is important to determine the particles behavior according to the design change. These results will be useful in designing the rectangular chambers for collective protection.
