  • The recent problems such as the rapid increase o electricity consumption, the large variation of electrical loads, and the sitting difficulty for new power plants could become a barrier to stable electrical power supply. Consequently, an electrical load management technology has become important, by which an electricity can be stored during off-peak time and efficiently used during peak time. The technology provides a variety of direct or indirect benefits which include, for utilities, reduction of new power plants, economical electricity production, and improved efficiency and reliability of power system and for consumers, low prices o electricity. The study is to develop a proto-type load management system and its application technology for a peak shaving. In the system, conventional batteries are used as energy storage device.

  • This paper proposes a low-cost, low-power, and high-capacity optical-electrical-optical-type reach extender that can provide 3R frame regeneration and remote management to increase the reach and split ratio with no change to a legacy time division multiple access passive optical network. To provide remote management, the extender gathers information regarding optical transceivers and link status per port and then transmits to a service provider using a simple network management protocol agent. The extender can also apply to an Ethernet passive optical network (E-PON) or a gigabit-capable PON (G-PON) by remote control. In a G-PON, in particular, it can provide burst mode signal retiming and burst-to-continuous mode conversion at the upstream path through a G-PON transmission convergence frame adaptor. Our proposed reach extender is based on the quad-port architecture for cost-effective design and can accommodate both the physical reach of 60 km and the 512 split ratios in a G-PON and the physical reach of 80 km and the 256 split ratios in an E-PON.

  • In this paper a power management unit for solar energy harvesting is proposed. If solar energy is sufficient, Power Management Unit(PMU) directly supplies load with solar energy. By contrast, if solar energy is insufficient to operate sensor nodes, voltage booster(VB) boosts the solar cell's output voltage, and then PMU supplies load with the harvested energy. The designed circuit had been fabricated using a 018um CMOS process. In the first case, the PMU supplies load with more energy than in the second case. In the second case where a VB is used, the PMU operates to supply load with solar energy even when illumination is low and minimum solar cells with very low output voltage are used.

  • The OS has the manager of the overall system operation, and has the exact information of the running system. Power management by the OS may have great impact for the optimization of the power consumption. We implement E-ACPI, an extended ACPI which is designed for an advanced power management of embedded systems. In this paper, we address (i) how we extend the exiting ACPI to E-ACPI, (ii) technical challenges to overcome in implementation, and (iii) flow we port our E-ACPI to an embedded linux system in this paper. Experimental results show that our E-ACPI is very useful and effective in practice.

  • In this thesis, we explain developing processes of the power transmission system for lift truck. Conventional power transmission system had some problems such as spatial constraints or low speed and high torque problem. Because conventional power transmission system was mainly designed for high speed vehicles. In this paper we developed power shift drive axle specialized for $2.0{\sim}3.5$ ton lift truck. Innovative structure of transmission which is built in inside axle, enables to reduce system weight and size by 40% compared to the conventional power transmission system. Also, it is possible to do additional functions such as auto parking system and anti-roll back system.

  • Real time informations from industrial power system in operation can be used for efficient energy conservation, optimal operation of electrical equipments, and expansion planning of apparatus. Requirements for energy conservation and supplied power quality in customers are increasing significantly because of their effects on the production cost and efficiency. Thus, the development of low cost power management system which can can operate in domestic power system properly is substantially requested. In this research, operation software for real time monitoring and control system in customer power system has been developed to achieve the above purposes. The development of the operating software and related technologies are expected to be applied successfully for reducing electricity cost, enhancing power quality, determining facility expansion planning, operating optimal power system, increasing production efficiency, and reducing maintenance cost.

  • The energy consumed by buildings among the total national energy consumption is more than 10% of the total. For this reason, Korea has adopted the zero energy building policy since 2025, and research on the energy saving technology of buildings has been demanded. Analysis of buildings' energy consumption patterns shows that lighting, heating and cooling energy account for more than 60% of total energy consumption, which is directly related to solar power acquisition and window opening and closing operation. In this paper, we have developed a low - power IoT sensor module for window system to transfer acquired information to building energy management system. This module transmits the external environment and window opening / closing status information to the building energy management system in real time, and constructs the network to actively take energy saving measures. The power used in the module is designed as an independent power source using solar power among the harvest energy. The topology of the power supply is a Buck converter, which is charged at 4V to the lithium ion battery through MPPT control, and the efficiency is about 85.87%. Communication is configured to be able to transmit in real time by applying WiFi. In order to reduce the power consumption of the module, we analyzed the hardware and software aspects and implemented a low power IoT sensor module.

  • The use of energy storage systems (ESSs) has become a feasible solution to solve the wind power intermittency issue. However, the use of ESSs increases the system cost significantly. In this paper, an optimal power flow control scheme to minimize the ESS capacity is proposed by using the zero-phase delay low-pass filter which can eliminate the phase delay between the dispatch power and the wind power. In addition, the filter time constant is optimized at the beginning of each dispatching interval to ensure the fluctuation mitigation requirement imposed by the grid code with a minimal ESS capacity. And also, a short-term power dispatch control algorithm is developed suitable for the proposed power dispatch based on the zero-phase delay low-pass filter with the predetermined ESS capacity. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed power management approach, case studies are carried out by using a 3-MW wind turbine with real wind speed data measured on Jeju Island.

  • Power management is a very important issue in portable electronic applications. Portable electronic devices require very efficient power management like LDO to increase the battery life. As the voltage variation of battery power is large in the application of cell phone, camera, laptop, automotive, industry application and so on, battery power is not directly used and LDO is used to supply the power of internal circuit. Besides, LDO can supply DC voltage that is lower than bauer voltage and constant DC voltage that is not related to largely fluctuated battery power. In the study, the power-save mode current and IR-drop characteristics are analyzed from a LDO with on-chip fabricated in 0.18-um CMOS technology.

  • The insatiable desire of consumers to want more and more performance from computer equipment has driven the powers of this equipment to levels that are putting a strain on the thermal management of data centers housing this equipment. Equipment powers have been rising steadily over the past 10 years at a rapid rate. When the industry switched from bipolar to CMOS back in the early 90's industry experts had thought that the low power CMOS technology would resolve all problems associated with power and heat. Little did they know that now the problems associated with the CMOS equipment has surpassed anything installed with the bipolar technologies 10 to 15 years ago. Data centers are being designed with 15 to 20 years life spans and customers we asking how to plan for the power and cooling within these data centers. This paper addresses some of the current issues with cooling of equipment in data centers and describes some of the on-going efforts to under the thermal environment. To set the stage far describing the data center thermal management issues the power trends from the microprocessor to the rack will be described.
