Operating characteristics of a loop heat pipe (LHP) having a bypass line was investigated experimentally. The LHP had a sintered metal wick as a capillary structure and methanol as a working fluid. The sintered metal wick was made of stainless steel of which the average pore size was 5 ${\mu}m$and porosity of 47%. A bypass line of a small diameter was attached between the vapor escape passage and the liquid reservoir. The dimension of the flat evaporator was $50(L){\times}40(W){\times}30(H)$ mm and that of the condenser was $50(L){\times}40(W){\times}11(H)$ mm. Wall and pipe material of the LHP was stainless steel and heating area was 35(W) mm${\times}$35(L) mm. The inner diameters of vapor and liquid transport lines were 4.0 mm and 2.0 mm, and the lengths of the two lines were both 0.5 m. The LHP was tested for three different tilt angles of horizontal, favorite tilt, and adverse tilt. The thermal load range was up to 290 W at the condenser above evaporation position. Furthermore, the effect of a bypass line on the start-up transient as well as steady-state operation was presented and discussed.
A small-scale loop heat pipe with polypropylene wick was fabricated and tested for its thermal performance. The container and tubing of the system was made of stainless steel and several working fluids were used to see the difference in performance including methanol, ethanol, acetone, R134a, and water. The heating area was 35 mm ${\times}$ 35 mm and there were nine axial grooves in the evaporator to provide a vapor passage. The pore size of the polypropylene wick inside the evaporator was varied from 0.5 m to 25 m. The size of condenser was 40 mm (W) ${\times}$ 50 mm (L) in which ten coolant paths were provided. The inner diameter of liquid and vapor transport lines were 2.0 mm and 4.0 mm, respectively and the length of which were 0.5 m. The PP wick LHP was operated with methanol, acetone, and ethanol normally. R134a was not compatible with PP wick and water was unsuitable within operating limit of $100^{\circ}C$. The minimum thermal load of 10 W (0.8 W/cm2) and maximum thermal load of 80 W (6.5 W/cm2) were achieved using methanol as working fluid with the condenser temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ with horizontal position.

Design optimization process and results of Loop Heat Pipe(LHP) using Tabu Search have been presented in this study. An objective of optimization is to reduce a mass of the LHP with satisfying operating temperature of a Lithium Ion battery onboard an aircraft. The battery is assumed to be used as power supply of air borne high energy laser system because of its high specific energy. The analytical models are based on a steady state mathematical model and the design optimization is performed using a Meta Model and Tabu Search. As an optimization results, the Tabu search algorithm guarantees global optimum with small computation time. Due to searching by random numbers, initial value is dominant factor to search global optimum. The optimization process could reduce the mass of the LHP which express the same performance as an published LHP.
Thermal performance and flow patterns inside the closed loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP) were experimentally investigated. For investigating the effect of working fluids, CLPHP was filled with various working fluids including methanol, acetone and ethanol. The thermal resistance was calculated by temperatures in evaporator and condenser and flow patterns were visualized by a digital camera. The thermal resistances for all fluids were decreased as the heat increases. Flow patterns change from static slug to elongated slug flows, bulk circulation and annular flows as the heat increases. Dry-out occurs after annular flows. For reasonable comparison of thermal performances, normalized CHF, Kutateladze number (Ku), was compared. Even though ethanol has smallest CHF, Ku of ethanol is similar with that of methanol. In addition, acetone has the highest Ku that means CLPHP with acetone provides the higher thermal performance compared with CLPHP with other fluids.
In performing a series of in-situ thermal response tests, the effective thermal conductivities of six vertical closed-loop ground heat exchangers were experimentally evaluated and compared one another, which were constructed in a test bed in Wonju. To compare thermal efficiency of the ground heat exchangers in field, the six boreholes were constructed with different construction conditions: grouting materials (cement vs. bentonite), different additives (silica sand vs. graphite) and the shape of pipe-sections (general U-loop type vs. 3 pipe-type). From the test results, it can be concluded that cement grouting has a higher effective thermal conductivity than bentonite grouting, and the efficiency of graphite better performs than silica sand as a thermally-enhancing addictive. In addition, a new 3 pipe-type heat exchanger provides less thermal interference between the inlet and outlet pipe than the conventional U-loop type heat exchanger, which results in superior thermal performance. Based on the results from the in-situ thermal response tests, a series of economic analyses have been made to show the applicability of the new addictives and 3 pipe-type heat exchanger.

A ground loop heat exchanger for the ground source heat pump system is the important equipment determining the thermal performance and initial cost of the system. The length and performance of the underground heat exchanger is dependent on ground thermal conductivity, operation hours, ground loop diameter, grout, ground loop arrangement, pipe placement and design temperature. In this study we find out heat exchanger length with various design factor.

In the present study, the cooling package using the heat pipe has been developed to improve the thermal performance in the point of cooling characteristics of the electronic chip placed to the subrack being readily assembled and disassembled in ATM switching system. As the preliminary experiments, the cooling performances between a conventional way using a cooling fin and a proposed method applying the heat pipe are compared and analyzed. The cooling performance at a simulated electronic component packaging a heat pipe module is approximately achieved up to $5.0W/cm^2$ heat flux and the allowable temperature at the heated chip is sustained in the range within $70^{\circ}C$. From the results, it is confirmed that temperature oscillations are also settled by inserted wick in the evaporator section. From the user's viewpoint, the method to assemble and disassemble the heat pipe easily has been devised.
The heat flux on a chip is rapidly increasing with decreasing the size of one. It is necessary to properly cool the high heat flux chip. One of the promising cooling methods is to apply CPL heat pipes with porous materials, for example PVA, polyethylene, and powder sintered metal plate and with microchannels in the evaporator. A small scale CPL heat pipe with PVA as wick was designed and manufactured. Since the height difference between the evaporator and the condenser is a crucial parameter in the CPL heat pipes, the performance of the heat pipes depending on the parameter was investigated. The parameter is higher the performance is better. However, the improvement rate of the performance does not increase the increase rate of the height. In addition to, the parameter effect depending on heat input was investigated.

Performance of heat exchanger was evaluated to heat exchanger using oscillating heat pipe for waste heat recovery of low temperature. Oscillating heat pipe used in this study was formed to the closed loop of serpentine shapes using copper tubes. Heat exchanger was formed to shell and tube type and composed of low finned tube. R-22 and R-141b were used to the working fluids of tube side and their charging ratio was 40%. And, water was used to the working fluid of shell side. As the experimental parameters, the inlet temperature difference of heating and cooling part of secondary fluid and the mass velocity of secondary fluid were used. The mass velocity of secondary fluid was changed from 90 kg/$m^2s\; to\;190 kg/m^2$s from the experimental results, heat recovery rate was linearly increased to the increment of the mass velocity of secondary fluid and the inlet temperature difference of secondary fluid. Finally, the performance of heat exchanger was evaluated by using $\varepsilon$-NTU method. It was found that NTU was about 1.5 when effectiveness was decided to 80%.
