  • Rails have residual stresses produced during manufacturing processes. The residual stresses play all important role on brittle fracture, fatigue strength and derailment by producing cracks in the web of rail. The web saw-cut test is a technique developed to measure the bulk longitudinal residual stress level. It is a simple mettled to estimate a stress intensity factor, $_{4}$ for a web crack by using the radii of curvature of the upper and lower portions of a cut rail. But according to this method, $_{4}$ varies along the rail length because the curvatures along tile rail length vary In this paper, tile residual stress was estimated by Finite Element Method and tile web saw-cut method. In addition tile variation of the residual stress with time was investigated.

  • Seven post-tensioned lightweight concrete (LWC) beam specimens were tested under a symmetrical two-point top loading system. The parameters investigated were the amounts of mild longitudinal reinforcement and effective prestressing. The design compressive strength and dry density of the LWC tested were 30 MPa and 1,770 $kg/m^3$, respectively. Similar to post-tensioned normal weight concrete (NWC) beams, the crack propagation and stress increase of the unbonded tendons were significantly affected by the amounts of mild longitudinal reinforcement and effective prestressing. With the increase in the amounts of mild longitudinal reinforcement and effective prestressing, the serviceability and flexural capacity of the beams were enhanced whereas the stress increase in the unbonded tendons decreased. To control the crack width in post-tensioned LWC beams, a minimum amount of mild longitudinal reinforcement specified in ACI 318-08 provision is required. The flexural behavior of post-tensioned LWC beams and stress increase of the unbonded tendons could be rationally predicted by the proposed non-linear two-dimensional analysis. On the other hand, ACI 318-08 flexure provision was too conservative about the post-tensioned LWC beams.

  • It is well recognized that damage resulting from freeze-thaw cycles is a serious problem causing deterioration and degradation of concrete. In general, freeze-thaw cycles change the microstructure of the concrete ultimately leading to internal stresses and cracking. In this study, a new method for one-sided stress wave velocity measurement has been applied to evaluate freeze-thaw damage in concrete by monitoring the velocity change of longitudinal and surface waves. The freeze-thaw damage was induced in a $400{\times}350{\times}100mm$ concrete specimen in accordance with ASTM C666 using s commercial testing apparatus. A cycle consisted of a variation of the temperature from -14 to 4 degrees Celsius. A cycle takes 4-5 hours with approximately equal times devoted to freezing-thawing. Measurement of longitudinal and surface wave velocities based on one-sided stress wave velocity measurement technique was made every 5 freeze-thaw cycle. The variation of longitudinal and surface wave velocities due to increasing freeze-thaw damage is demonstrated and compared to determine which one is more effective to monitor freeze-thaw cyclic damage progress. The variation in longitudinal wave velocity measured by one-sided technique is also compared with that measured by the conventional through transmission technique.

  • Experimental studies are investigated for RC column retrofitting under cyclic load. Design considerations are jacketing of steel plate of carbon fiber with epoxy bonding, use of unbonded plate, additional concrete grouting, ratio of additional longitudinal steel reinforcement and longitudinal configuration of additional ties. Investigated results are 1) jacketing and additional reinforcements are effective for strengthening, 2) use of additional grouting is less effective with respect to increased section. Future studies are needed to evaluate the requirements about additional reinforcements for member stress level, 3) bond between original and additional grout concrete.

  • In this paper an experimental approach of the relocation plastic hinging zones of nine reinforced concrete exterior beam-column subassemblages under cyclic loads was tried. The main parameters of the testing program were location of the plastic hinge, difference of the special reinforcement, inclined or intermediate layers of longitudinal reinforcement, applied maximum shear stress. The conclusions presented herein are based on the limited texts conducted. Inclined or intermediate layers of longitudinal reinforcement and extra top and bottom steel in the beam over a specific legnth can be used to move the beam plastic hinging zone away from the column face. But, for the use of intermediate layers of longitudinal reinforcement, sheat reinforcement detail need further investigation.

  • This paper estimates the residual longitudinal strength of a damaged double hull VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) under combined vertical and horizontal bending moments using Smith's method. The damage estimated in this study occurred due to collision or grounding accidents. The effects of the randomness of the yield stress, plate thickness, extent of damage, and the combination of these three parameters on the ultimate hull girder strength were investigated. Random variables were generated by a Monte Carlo simulation and applied to the double hull VLCC described by the ISSC (International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress) 2000 report.

  • Effective shear modulus of continuous fiber reinforced polymeric composites is measured using a modified Iosipescu Shear Test(IST) and compared with data obtained by finite element analyses that a concept of unit cell is. It is found that the numerical results of the longitudinal shear modulus give a good agreement with experimental data at lower fiber volume fraction. In this paper, both the distance and stress transfer between the fibers are discussed as the major factors.

  • In this paper bolt-tightened Langevin type vibrator was designed using longitudinal-torsional vibration. These two vibrations make rotary displacement at the end of the vibrator. ANSYS was used to determine shape and dimension of the vibrator in addition to resonant frequency, displacement and stress distribution. This kind of vibrator can be applied for a brakeless and gearless rotary motor which has high torque at low speed.

  • High-speed railway bridges subject to effect of statical loads by temperature change as well as dynamic loads by interaction between vehicle load which run specially fast and behavior of bridges, If suitable longitudinal expansion by temperature change of bridge does not happened, it can cause unhealthy condition for the parts of bridges as well as can generate addition stress to bridges, For these reason, Analysis and Estimation of data about behavior of bridges occupies important factor in that estimate the remaining life of bridges and select the maintenance, repair and retrofit. In this paper, Analysis for the long-term behavior of bridges using Longitudinal displacement and Temperature data that is actuality measured data to the bridges of Seoul-Busan high speed railroad test section has been made.

  • The study summarized in this paper is concerned with the buckling of longitudinal bars in reinforced concrete columns with numerical analysis method. The objectives of this study are (1) to investigate the stress transfer mechanism between concrete and reinforcement and (2) to propose a modeling equation. The results give an acceptable agreement between the proposed modeling equation and published computer packages as follows; (1) the proposed equation is a possible of strain softening of concrete and buckling of reinforcement. (2) the buckling of longitudinal bar is mainly influenced by spacing of hoop and location of the bar
