  • To analyze the effects of compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio on buckling behavior of columns, 36tied reinforced concrete columns with hinged ends were tested. The 100mm square cross section was used and the amount of eccentricity was 10mm. The compressive strengths of column specimens with slenderness ratios of 15, 30 and 50 were 202, 513 and 752 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The longitudinal steel ratio of columns with bending about a section diagonal and about a principal axis were 2.85%(4-D10). The ratio of ultimate load capacity to that of short column with the same eccentricity was much decreased at high slenderness ratio with increasing the compressive strength of concrete. And the lateral displacement of column at the ultimate load was decreased as the strength was increased. These are due to that at high slenderness ratio, the load capacity and behavior of column are affected by flexural rigidity. And, it was also found that for the same quantity of confining steel and level of axis load, there is little difference between the flexural strength for bending about a section diagonal and for bending about principal axis.

  • Experimental studies are investigated for RC column retrofitting under cyclic load. Design considerations are jacketing of steel plate of carbon fiber with epoxy bonding, use of unbonded plate, additional concrete grouting, ratio of additional longitudinal steel reinforcement and longitudinal configuration of additional ties. Investigated results are 1) jacketing and additional reinforcements are effective for strengthening, 2) use of additional grouting is less effective with respect to increased section. Future studies are needed to evaluate the requirements about additional reinforcements for member stress level, 3) bond between original and additional grout concrete.

  • Unlike concrete bridge, steel bridge resists external force by forming thin plate. Thus, because steel girder bridge has big slenderness ratio, buckling is a major design factor. Plate girder consists of flange and web plate. Because of economic views, web plate that resists shear forces is made by more thinner plate. Thus, web plate has much risk for buckling. The objective of this study is to analyze the buckling behaviors of plate girder and to present the proper reinforcement location of longitudinal stiffeners. Various parametric study according to the change of web height, transverse stiffeners and load condition are examined.

  • Fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete(RC) and steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) beams has been experimentally investigated. Fatigue behavior influenced by longitudinal reinforcement ratio, volume and type of steel fiber, strength of concrete and load ratio $P_{u}/P_{o}$. It can be observed from experimental results that addition of steel fiber to reinforced concrete beam reduces crack widths and increases stiffness, and thus enhances the behavior in serviceability limit states also for high cyclic fatigue loading.

  • This study deals with the quasi-static tests on steel reinforced concrete composite columns with single embedded steel or multiple members. For the design of bridge piers, the composite section needs to have low steel ratio for cost savings because the dimension of the pier section is usually large. There is lack of design guidelines for these composite columns with low steel ratio, but the design provisions for the normal reinforced concrete column can be used for the design because of the low steel ratio. It is necessary to provide the design provisions in terms of the strength limit state and seismic performance by the detail requirements on the longitudinal steel and the transverse steel. The test parameters in this study were determined considering the current design provisions on RC columns. Through the quasi-static tests, the seismic performance of the composite columns were discussed.

  • This paper is a part of a research program to develop a new design method for reinforced concrete bridge columns under seismic loading. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the relationship between ductility and confinement steel amount and to propose a design equation for reinforced concrete bridge columns. Computer program NARCC was used for parametric study, which was proved to provide good and conservative analytical result especially for deformation capacity and ductility factor compared with test result. A total of 7,200 reinforced concrete columns confined with spirals or perfect circular hoops were selected by combination of variables such as section diameter, aspect ratio, concrete compressive strength, yielding strength of longitudinal and confinement steel, longitudinal steel ratio, axial load ratio, and confinement steel ratio. Based on the parametric study a new design equation for confinement steel amount considering ductility demand was proposed, which can be used in the new seismic design method, i.e. ductility-based seismic design, for RC bridge columns.

  • Results of an experimental investigation on the behavior and ultimate shear capacity of 27 reinforced concrete Transfer (deep) beams are summarized. The main variables were percent longitudinal(tension) steel (0.28 to 0.60%), percent horizontal web steel (0.60 to 2.40%), percent vertical steel (0.50to 2.25%), percent orthogonal web steel, shear span-to-depth ratio (1.10 to 3.20) and cube concrete compressive strength (32 MPa to 48 MPa).The span of the beam has been kept constant at 1000 mm with100 mm overhang on either side of the supports. The result of this study shows that the load transfer capacity of transfer (deep) beam with distributed longitudinal reinforcement is increased significantly. Also, the vertical shear reinforcement is more effective than the horizontal reinforcement in increasing the shear capacity as well as to transform the brittle mode of failure in to the ductile mode of failure. It has been observed that the orthogonal web reinforcement is highly influencing parameter to generate the shear capacity of transfer beams as well as its failure modes. Moreover, the results from the experiments have been processed suitably and presented an analytical model for design of transfer beams in high-rise buildings for estimating the shear capacity of beams.

  • Seismic performance and retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) two-column piers widely used at roadway bridges in Korea was experimentally evaluated. Ten two-column piers that were 400 mm in diameter and 2,000 mm in height were constructed. These piers were subjected to hi-directional cyclic loadings under a constant axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Test parameters were the confinement steel ratio, loading pattern, lap splice of longitudinal reinforcing bars, and retrofitting method. Specimens with lap-spliced longitudinal bars were retrofitted with steel jacket, pre-stressing steel wire, and steel band. Test result showed that while the specimens subjected to bi-directional lateral cyclic loadings which consisted of two main amplitudes in the transverse axis and two sub amplitudes in longitudinal axis, referred to as a T-series cyclic loadings, exhibited plastic hinges both at the top and bottom parts of the column, the specimens subjected to bi-directional lateral cyclic loadings in an opposite way, referred to as a L-series cyclic loadings, exhibited a plastic hinge only at the bottom of the column. The displacement ductility of the specimen under the T-series loadings was bigger than that of the specimen under the L-series loadings. Specimen retrofitted with pre-stressing steel wires exhibited poor ductility due to the upward shift of the plastic hinge region because of over-reinforcement, but specimens retrofitted with steel jacket and steel band showed the required displacement ductility. Steel band can be an effective retrofitting scheme to improve the seimsic performance of RC bridge piers, considering its practical construction.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study on the shear strength of high strength concrete beams with steel fibrous. In general, the shear strength of reinforced concrete beams is affected by the compressive strengths of concrete( c), the shear span-depth ratio(a/d), the longitudinal steel ratio($\rho$ $\omega$), and shear reinforcement. An experimental investigation of the shear strength of high strength concrete beams with steel fibrous was conducted. In each series the shear span-depth ratio(a/d) was held constant at 1.5, 2.8, or 3.6, while concrete strengths were varied from 320 to 520, to 800kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. To verify the proposed equations the experimental results were compared with those from other researches such as equation of ACI code 318-95 or equation of Zsutty. To deduce equation for shear strength from experimental data carried out MINITAP program. According to the experimental results, the addition of steel fibrous has increased the deflection and strain at failure load, improving the brittleness of the high strength concrete.
