  • An optimal power control algorithm based on convex optimization is proposed for base stations in long term evolution networks. An objective function was formulated to maximize the proportional fairness of the networks. The optimal value of the objective function was obtained using convex optimization and distributed methods based on the path loss model between the base station and users. Field tests on live networks were conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results verified that, in a multi-cell multi-user scenario, the proposed algorithm increases system throughputs, proportional fairness, and energy efficiency by 9, 1.31 and 20.2 %, respectively, compared to the conventional fixed power allocation method.

  • Recently, the use of mobile devices has increased, and mobile traffic is growing rapidly. In order to deal with such massive traffic, cognitive radio (CR) is applied to efficiently use limited-spectrum resources. However, there can be multiple communication systems trying to access the white space (unused spectrum), and inevitable interference may occur to cause mutual performance degradation. Therefore, understanding the effects of interference in CR-based systems is crucial to meaningful operations of these systems. In this paper, we consider a long-term evolution (LTE) system using additional spectra by accessing the TV white space, where low-power devices (LPDs) are licensed primary users, in addition to TV broadcasting service providers. We model such a heterogeneous system to analyze the co-existence problem and evaluate the interference effects of LPDs on LTE user equipment (UE) throughput. We then present methods to mitigate the interference effects of LPDs by 'de-selecting' some of the UEs to effectively increase the overall sector throughput of the CR-based LTE system.

  • Physical models, which are often used for water resource management, are difficult to build and operate with input data and may involve the subjective views of users. In recent years, research using data-driven models such as machine learning has been actively conducted to compensate for these problems in the field of water resources, and in this study, an artificial neural network was used to simulate long-term rainfall runoff in the Osipcheon watershed in Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do. For this purpose, three input data groups (meteorological observations, daily precipitation and potential evapotranspiration, and daily precipitation - potential evapotranspiration) were constructed from meteorological data, and the results of training the LSTM (Long Short-term Memory) artificial neural network model were compared and analyzed. As a result, the performance of LSTM-Model 1 using only meteorological observations was the highest, and six LSTM-MLP ensemble models with MLP artificial neural networks were built to simulate long-term runoff in the Fifty Thousand Watershed. The comparison between the LSTM and LSTM-MLP models showed that both models had generally similar results, but the MAE, MSE, and RMSE of LSTM-MLP were reduced compared to LSTM, especially in the low-flow part. As the results of LSTM-MLP show an improvement in the low-flow part, it is judged that in the future, in addition to the LSTM-MLP model, various ensemble models such as CNN can be used to build physical models and create sulfur curves in large basins that take a long time to run and unmeasured basins that lack input data.

  • Expecting the expansion of the elderly population under long-term home care with the coming of the aged society, this study purposed to propose a prevention and self-reliance support model and to get practical implications for minimizing dependency on care benefits and enhancing the effectiveness of prevention and self-reliance support. Research methods employed for this study were: first, reviewing theoretical literature for clarifying the concept of prevention and self-reliance support in providing long-term care benefits for the elderly; second, identifying factors hindering prevention and self-reliance support through analyzing standard long-term care use plans and documents related to long-term care benefits at elderly welfare centers to which the research subjects belonged; and third, surveying care benefit users on factors hindering their use of prevention and self-reliance support and their needs in the use of care benefits. Based on the results of the three types of qualitative research, we proposed directions for prevention and self-reliance support modeling and suggested practical implications for enhancing the effectiveness of prevention and self-reliance support. For this study, we collected documentary materials and conducted in-depth interviews with the participants with the consents and cooperation of managers and professional social workers at day care centers and elderly welfare centers in D City. According to the results of this study, literature review suggested that long-term care prevention and self-reliance support should be provided in a way of 'strengthening user-centered support systems,' which support elderly long-term care beneficiaries' right to lead a life as the subject of their own life. Document analysis found the absence of benefits related to health and medicine and lack of social support systems for prevention and self-reliance support, and the results of in-depth interviews suggested the necessity to strengthen services related to elderly long-term care beneficiaries' prevention and self-reliance, and the keen needs of the long-term care elders for prevention and self-reliance included: ① loneliness, anxiety, fear; ② missing for and worry about children and people; ③ moving, outing; ④ health and medical services, rehabilitation programs; ⑤ desire to use day care; ⑥ inconvenience of house structure; ⑦desire for meal menus; and ⑧ the occurrence of disuse syndrome. Based on these results, we suggested the base of prevention and self-reliance support modeling with three axes: ① strengthening user-centered support systems; ② strengthening support systems connected to health and medicine; and ③ strengthening social support systems.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to improve cell edge users' performance in HetNet (heterogeneous network) systems by cooperatively transmitting signals using remote radio heads (RRHs) located near coverage boundaries, referred to as edge RRHs. The proposed method locates the edge RRHs in specific locations of the cell boundary and provides an efficient operational strategy by adjusting the duty cycle of the edge RRHs and base stations. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by experimental performance based on the system model parameters of the CoMP (coordinated multi-point transmission and reception) scenario, which is discussed in LTE-Advanced (Long Term Evolution - Advanced) standard contributions. When compared with conventional methods, utilization of edge RRHs is especially advantageous for the performance improvement of lower percentile users in terms of average throughput and effectively improves the fairness among users.

  • Japan is a super-aged society where the proportion of the people aged over 65 is exceeded 20%. Therefore, there are many accidents that occur in long-term care facilities in Japan, and there are many civil litigations. The Japanese court has acknowledged in many cases that the long-term facility is responsible for the damage to the elderly who is injured in the facility. The cases can be divided into ① tumbling down, ② wandering, ③ suffocation, ④ bedsore, and ⑤ accidents among the facility-users. In most cases, the court found that the facility violated its obligation to protect their users. This is not only the case where the manager or the employee of the facility violates the obligation to watch and care for the elderly, but in some cases, the failure to maintain the human and material system itself is recognized. The basis for such judgment is whether the facility can predict the possibility of an accident and whether the facility has taken measures to prevent accidents. Also, the Japanese court recognizes the transfer of burden of proof in order to expedite the victims' rights. However, the liability of the facility for damages should not be so heavy that it would be hesitant to allow a person to enter the facility and make a contract.
