Characterization of Long-term Trends of Rainfall and Stream Flow in South Korea (한반도 강수량과 유량의 장기 추세 분석)

  • 기후변화에 따른 강수변화특성 연구는 장기 강수의 추세변화가 가용수자원과 관련된 여러 문제들과 밀접하게 연관되어 있기 때문에 중요하다. Mann-Kendall 검정을 사용하여 한반도의 월별 및 년 강수량과 유량의 추세검증분석을 수행하였다. 한반도 강우특성의 장기추세는 총강우량 증가, 총 강우일수 감소 그리고 80mm 이상 강우일수 증가로 요약될 수 있다. 강수자료의 추세분석에서는 강수량의 증가와 강우일수의 감소 그리고 호우일수의 증가를 볼 수 있었지만 MK 검정결과 $90\%$$95\%$ 유의성을 가진 증가나 감소의 추세성을 보이지는 않았다. 이는 강수량의 증가로 인한 유량의 증가 추세가 유량자체의 변동 특성보다 크지 않으므로 유량자료의 추세에서 통계적 유의성을 가지는 어떠한 경향성을 찾을 수 없음을 나타낸다.

Microbiological Identification of Medical Probiotic Bisspan Strain (의약용 프로바이오틱 비스판균의 미생물학적 동정)

  • Beneficial bacteria, which have been used for medical purpose and for medicines for treating intestinal disorders, include strains of Bifidobacterium sp., Lactobacillus sp., Enterococcus sp., Clostridium butyricum, Lactobacillus sporogenes, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus polyfermenticus and the like. Bacillus polyfermenticuss SCD with is commonly called as Bispan strain has been appropriately used for the treatment of long-term intestinal disorders, since the live strains in the form of active endospores can successfully reach the target intestine. In this study, the identification and characterization of Bispan strain was done using SEM observation, API 50CHB kits, isoprenoid quinone analysis, and fatty acid analysis. These results suggest that Bispan strain is very similar to Bacillus subtilis.

  • In this study, we assessed on quality of mortar using the steel slag powder as binder. Then we investigated properties of mortar in the long term using steel slag for fine aggregate. As a result of experiment, quality of the mortar using steel slag powder appeared too low compared with using only OPC and compressive strength of specimen using the steel slag fine aggregate have similar using crush sand.

  • Optical microscopy of recently living and cleared material of the fucoid, Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis, revealed novel aspects of its interaction with the ascomycete Mycophycias ascophylli (Cotton) Kohlmeyer and Kohlmeyer (previously Mycosphaerella ascophylli Cotton). Most host cells are associated with hyphae by lateral attachment of cell walls. Hyphae form extensive networks throughout the host thallus and show considerable differentiation in the various host tissues. In the base of epidermal cells, hyphae form multicellular rings around each host cell to produce a continuous network. In medullary regions, long, relatively unbranched and longitudinally aligned hyphae occur, with radial branches extending into cortical regions. Scattered in the inner cortex of host tissue are numerous multicellular nodes of smaller, polygonal to irregular shaped cells with five or more radiating arms of hyphae. Individual hyphal cells show a variety of specializations including swellings and appressoria-like attachments to some host cells. These observations provide the morphological basis for the mutualistic symbiosis supported by recent experimental work. We conclude that this association is best described by the term “symbiotum.”

  • A long-term nationwide nonpoint-source pollution monitoring program was initiated by the Ministry of Environment Republic of Korea (ME) in 2007. Monitoring devices including rain gauges, flow meters, and automatic samplers were installed in monitoring sites to collect dynamic runoff data in 2008-2009. More than 10 rainfall events with three or more antecedent dry days were monitored per year. More than 10 samples were collected and analyzed per event. So far, five land use types (single family, apartments, education facilities, power plants, and other public facilities) have been monitored 23 to 24 times each. Characterization of the runoff from different land use types will aid unit load estimation in Korea and hopefully in other countries with similar land use. The monitoring results will be reported regularly at national and international levels.

  • Better understanding of in-situ mechanical behavior of pavement foundations is very important to predict long-term effects on the system performance of transport infrastructure. In order to do that, resilient stiffness characterization of geomaterals is needed to properly adopt such mechanistic analysis under both traffic and environmental loadings. In this paper, in situ monitoring data from KHC test road was used to analyze the non-linearity of stress conditions under traffic and moisture loadings. Then, the predicted non-linear response using finite element method with a selected constitutive model of foundation geomaterials are verified with the field data.

Effect of Dilation on the Mechanical Characterization of Vascular Prostheses

  • The purpose of this study has been to investigate the effect of dilation on the some mechanical properties of several types of warp-knitted vascular grafts. The structures of warp knit vascular grafts used in the experiments were reverse locknit, locknit, and Tricot. Various mechanical properties of these grafts were determined using devices developed for the purpose. Clinical data obtained were compared with experimental results of warp knit vascular grafts. The most important mechanical properties are found to be creep extension, bursting strengths, and compliance. Preliminary results indicate that vascular grafts are non-compliant and exhibit creep which is predictive of the long term dilation that has been noted in the clinical results. It is found that there is a positive correlation between experimental data and clinical results for at least the grafts tested.

  • In this study, the pressure vessel piping with corrosion used during long term were investigated from the time-frequency analysis method. The damage of piping could be evaluated the attenuation factor by ultrasonic parameters such as center frequency and echo waveform. Based on NDE analysis by time-frequency analysis method, it should also be possible to evaluate from various damages and defects in piping members.

  • A new vacuum packaging process in wafer level is developed for the surface micromachining devices using glass silicon anodic bonding technology. The inside pressure of the packaged device was measured indirectly by the quality factor of the mechanical resonator. The measured Q factor was about 5$\times10^4$ and the estimated inner pressure was about 1 mTorr. And it is also possible to change the inside pressure of the packaged devices from 2 Torr to 1 mTorr by varying the amount of the Ti gettering material. The long-term stability test is still on the way, but in initial characterization, the yield is about 80% and the vacuum degradation with time was not observed.

  • Polymeric composite insulators are used for outdoor insulation. However, our knowledge about their long-term performance in an outdoor environment is still very limited. The electrical stress caused the surface of these insulators to become degradation. In order to evaluate the tracking resistance of polymer insulators, we performed the tracking wheel test which is recommended by CEA LWIWG-01. And the flashover voltage tests were conducted for understanding electrical characteristics after tacking wheel test. Also, these insulators are studied by characterization methods such as contact angle measurement, SEM, etc.
