The output current of the Grid Connected Inverter (GCI) can be polluted with harmonics mainly due to i) dead time in switches, ii) non-linearity of switches, iii) grid harmonics, and iv) DC link fluctuation. Therefore, it is essential to design the robust Harmonic Compensation (HC) technique for the improvement of output current quality and fulfill the IEEE 1547 Total harmonics Distortion (THD) limit i.e. <5%. The conventional harmonic techniques often are complex in implementation due to their i) additional hardware needs, ii) complex structure, iii) difficulty in tuning of parameters, iv) current controller compatibility issues, and v) higher computational burden. In this paper, to eliminate the harmonics from the GCI output current, a novel Digital Lock-In Amplifier (DLA) based harmonic detection is proposed. The advantage of DLA is that it extracts the harmonic information accurately, which is further compensated by means of PI controller in feed forward manner. Moreover, the proposed HC method does not require additional hardware and it works with any current controller reference frame. To show the effectiveness of the proposed HC method a 5kW GCI prototype built in laboratory. The output current THD is achieved less than 5% even with 10% load, which is verified by simulation and experiment.
Battery diagnosis is vital to battery-based applications because it ensures system reliability by avoiding battery failure. This paper presents a novel intelligent battery charger with an online diagnosis function to circumvent interruptions in system operation. The charger operates in normal charging and diagnosing modes. The diagnosis function is performed with the impedance spectroscopy technique, which is achieved by injecting a sinusoidal voltage excitation signal to the battery terminals without the need for additional hardware. The impedance spectrum of the battery is calculated based on voltage excitation and current response with the aid of an embedded digital lock in amplifier in a digital signal processor. The measured impedance data are utilized in the application of the complex nonlinear least squares method to extract the battery parameters of the equivalent circuit. These parameters are then compared with the reference values to reach a diagnosis. A prototype of the proposed charger is applied to four valve-regulated lead-acid batteries to measure AC impedance. The results are discussed.
Gyroscope is a very important core sensor, as a rotation sensor in inertial space, in inertial guidance and navigation system on aeronautics, plane, vessel and so on for civilian and millitary applications. Mechnical gyroscopes, adopting a principle of spinning a top, have been used in many application system. These mechnical gyroscopes need high power consumption, long warming time and complicated peripheral devices. But fiber-optic gyroscopes, based on the Sagnac effect, have novel advantages as small volume. simple scheme, low power consumption and high reliability. So we have developed a Intermediate grade All-fiber Optic Gyroscope, which has open-loop and minimum reciprocal configuration scheme. We have designed feedback circuits for stability of amplitude and phase using four lock-in amplifier(LIA) circuits and also used for noise limitation. This paper describes the scheme of optical part and electronic part and also test results of this all-fiber optic gyroscope. The performance have been achieved as long-term bias drift of $9.54^{\circ}/h$, random walk of $0.0317^{\circ}/\sqrt{h}$ and dynamic range of ${\pm}150\;deg/s$.

An existing infrared (IR) analysis system is generally composed of infrared source, IR focusing lenses, IR detector, and optical chopper. An optical chopper is widely used in combination with lock-in amplifier to improve the signal-to-noise ratio by periodically interrupting incident light beam. During recent years, a few researches on miniaturized optical chopper have been reported to apply to micro-scaled optical systems. In this paper, a micro optical chopper operated by electromagnetic actuation is proposed and applied to a miniaturized micro-scaled optical system operating in IR spectral range. Additionally, the fabrication method of the proposed micro chopper is demonstrated. The proposed micro optical chopper is composed of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane, solenoid, and permanent magnet. The permanent magnet is bonded on the PDMS membrane using an ultraviolet-activated adhesive. The operation of the chopper is based on the attractive and repulsive forces between permanent magnet and solenoid induced by an electrical current flowing through the solenoid. The fabricated micro optical chopper could operate up to 200 Hz of frequency. The maximum operating distance of the chopper with 7mm diameter membrane was $750{\mu}m$ at 100 Hz of frequency.

We present how to optimize the operation condition including frequency of the orthogonal fluxgate sensor in this paper. The orthogonal fluxgate sensor was fabricated with a Co-based amorphous wire with 10 mm long and 100 ${\mu}m$ in the diameter and a 270-turn pickup coil wound on the amorphous wire. In order to investigate the frequency dependence of the sensitivity, output spectra of the sensor which was connected by using a coaxial cable with various lengths of 0.5-5 m were measured with a RF lock-in amplifier. The maximum sensitivities were obtained at different frequencies according to coaxial cable lengths. It was found that the optimal operation frequencies, at which maximum sensitivities were appeared, were almost identical to the frequencies of impedance resonance. The maximum sensitivity and optimal operation frequency were 1.1 V/Oe (${\approx}$ 11000 V/T) and 1.25 MHz respectively.

In this work, we used PWM sampling for demodulation of a fiber-optic interferometric current transformer. The interference signal from a fiber-optic CT is sampled with PWM triggers that produce a 90-degree phase difference between two consecutively sampled signals. The current-induced phase is extracted by applying an arctangent demodulation and a phase unwrapping algorithm to the sampled signals. From experiments using the proposed demodulation, we obtained phase measurement accuracy and a linearity error, in AC current measurements, of ~2.35 mrad and 0.18%, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed method was compared with that of a lock-in amplifier demodulation, which showed only 0.36% difference. To compare the birefringence effects of different fiber-optic sensor coils, a flint glass fiber and a standard single-mode fiber were used under the same conditions. The flint glass fiber coil with a Faraday rotator mirror showed the best performance. Because of the simple hardware structure and signal processing, the proposed demodulation would be suitable for low-cost over-current monitoring in high voltage power systems.
The modulated LII technique has been suggested for the measurement of axial velocity profiles of laminar diffusion flames. The theoretical background is explained based on the blackbody radiation and LII signal. Experimentally, soot particles in ethylene diffusion flames are heated by a modulated Ar-ion laser beam. LII signals and their phase angles are measured using a lock-in amplifier at the different flame heights and the axial flow velocities are obtained from the measured phase angle delay informations. The measured velocities are similar to those from LDV measurements under the same operating conditions. The effects of laser power, LII signal wavelength, and modulation frequencies are not sensitive to the velocity measurement. However, the choice of an optical chopper blade type could affect the measurement result. The use of a 6/5 chopper blade showed the better result that is. possibly due to the square shape of modulated laser beam. This study successfully demonstrated that axial flow velocities of laminar diffusion flames can be measured by a new technique utilizing LII signal, which does not need particle seeding unlikely to LDV or PIV techniques.

For application of carbon nano-tube (CNT) as a counter electrode materials of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), the electrochemical behavior of CNT electrode was studied, employing cyclic-voltammetry (C-V) and impedance spectroscopy. Fabrication of CNT-paste and formation of CNT-counter electrode for characteristic measurement have been carried out using ball-milling and doctor blade process, respectively. Unit cell for measurements was assembled using Pt electrode, CNT electrode, and iodine-embedded electrolyte. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used for structural investigation of CNT powder and electrode. Sheet resistance of electrode was measured with 4-point probe method. Electrochemical properties of electrode, C-V and impedance spectrum, were studied, employing potentiogalvanostat (EG&G 273A) and lock in amplifier (EG&G 5210). As a results, the sheet resistance of CNT electrode is almost similar to that of F-doped SnO2 (FTO) coated glass substrate as approximately 10 ohm/sq. From C-V and impedance spectroscopy measurements, it was found that CNT electrode has high reaction rate and low interface reaction resistance between CNT surface and electrolyte. These results provides that CNT electrode were superior to that of conventional Pt electrode. Particularly, the reaction rate in the CNT electrode is about thrice high than Pt electrode. Therefore. CNT electrode is to be good candidate material for counter electrode in DSSC.
This paper proposes a magnetoelectric (ME) composite transducer structure consisting of a magnetostrictive H-type Fe-Ni fork substrate and piezoelectric PZT plates. The fork composite structure has a higher ME voltage coefficient compared to other ME composite structures due to the higher quality (Q) factor. The ME sensitivity of the fork structure reaches 12 V/Oe (i.e., 150 V/cm Oe). The fork composite with two PZT plates electrically connected in series exhibits over 5 times higher ME voltage coefficient than the output of the rectangle structure in the same size. The experiment shows the composite of a Fe-Ni fork substrate and PZT plates has a significantly enhanced ME voltage coefficient and a higher ME sensitivity relative to the prior sandwiched composite laminates. By the use of a lock-in amplifier with 10 nV resolution, this transducer can detect a weak magnetic field of less than $10^{-12}$ T. This transducer can also be designed for a magnetoelectric energy harvester due to its passive high-efficiency ME energy conversion.
