The influences of sensitization on localized corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel, were investigated, using micro-dropletcell techniques. Micro-droplet cell allows one to align the micro-electrode to the desired spot of the working electrode and measure directly local current with the potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization and a.c. impedance. Micro-electrochemical tests were carried out inside of the grain and on grain boundaries separately. It was found that sensitization decreased the pitting potential, increasing corrosion current density around grain boundaries. Galvanic current density was also measured between grain and grain boundaries.
Unforeseen failures of boilers in power plants may affect the continuation of electricity generation. Main failures in boilers are influenced by the tube material, tube position, boiler service temperature and pressure, and chemical composition of the feed water and coal. This investigation was intended to find answers on the causes and mechanism of failure of the fire-side boiler water-wall tubes, due to perforation and corrosion. The tube conformed to the material requirements in terms of its chemical composition and hardness. Microscopic examination showed ferrite and pearlite indicating no changes in its microstructure due to the temperature variation. SEM test showed a single layer and homogenous film density particularly on the area far from perforation. However, layers of corrosion product were formed on the nearby perforation area. EDX showed that there were Na, Ca, S, and O elements on the failed surface. XRD indicated the presence of Fe2O3 oxide. The failure mechanism was identified as a result of significant localized wall thinning of the boiler water wall-tube due to oxidation.
The cavity formed by the ultrasonic generation in the fluid with the application of water cavitation peening collides into the metal surface. At this time, the surface modification effect such as the work hardening presents by the compressive residual stress formed due to the localized plastic deformation. In this investigation, the water cavitation peening technology in the distilled water with the lapse of time was applied to 5052-O aluminum alloy for aluminum ship of a high value. So, the optimum water cavitation peening time on the effect for surface hardening and anti-corrosion property was investigated. Consequently, the water cavitatin peening time on excellent hardness and corrosion resistance characteristic presented 3.5 min. and 5.0 min, respectively. The surface hardness in the optimum water cavitation peening time was improved approximately 45% compared to the non-WCPed condition. In addition, corrosion current density was decreased.
In this study, the characteristics of the experimentally produced high N-high Cr bearing stainless steels are discussed as a part of applications of materials for FGD (Fuel Gas Desulfurization) system of thermal power plants or for power plants using seawater as coolant. Corrosion resistance of developed alloys is especially investigated in detail. Corrosion characteristics of vacuum melted cast are shown to be superior to that of air melted one. From the viewpoint of CPT, It is estimated that the differences of corrosion resistance are $21.8^{\circ}C{\sim}24.6^{\circ}C$ at PRE 40 and $8^{\circ}C{\sim}12.4^{\circ}C$ at PRE 50, and the gaps becomes bigger as the PRE values are lower. In the evaluation of corrosion resistance in alloy A2501, Z3101, and A3301 according to Cr concentration, alloy A3301 shows a deviation from the general tendency in chloride solutions. It has relatively high PRE value as 48.6, but it has relatively poor pitting resistance. It is, however, difficult to observe a specific phase except ferrite in microstructure analysis and neither detects special phase such as sigma phase.

Under the long-term effect of corrosive environment, many cold-formed steel (CFS) structures have serious corrosion problems. Corrosion leads to the change of surface morphology and the loss of section thickness, which results in the change of instability mode and failure mechanism of CFS structure. This paper mainly investigates the elastic local buckling behavior of corroded CFS columns. The surface morphology scanning test was carried out for eight CFS columns accelerated corrosion by the outdoor periodic spray test. The thin shell finite element (FE) eigen-buckling analysis was also carried out to reveal the influence of corrosion surface characteristics, corrosion depth, corrosion location and corrosion area on the elastic local buckling behaviour of the plates with four simply supported edges. The accuracy of the proposed formulas for calculating the elastic local buckling stress of the corroded plates and columns was assessed through extensive parameter studies. The results indicated that for the plates considering corrosion surface characteristics, the maximum deformation area of local buckling was located at the plates with the minimum average section area. For the plates with localized corrosion, the main buckling shape of the plates changed from one half-wave to two half-wave with the increase in corrosion area length. The elastic local buckling stress decreased gradually with the increase in corrosion area width and length. In addition, the elastic local buckling stress decreased slowly when corrosion area thickness was relatively large, and then tends to accelerate with the reduction in corrosion area thickness. The distance from the corrosion area to the transverse and longitudinal centerline of the plate had little effect on the elastic local buckling stress. Finally, the calculation formula of the elastic local buckling stress of the corroded plates and CFS columns was proposed.
Factors to cause accidents were investigated through a systematic analysis of leakage accidents in welded LP-gas cylinder between 199 and 1999. As a result It was showed that most of leakage accident occurred at the pin-hole due to the localized corrosion on welded zone in cylinder. Accordingly, in this paper, we suggested that the problems of heat treatment condition in two-piece welded cylinder and substitute proposal for preventing the tearing of T zone in three-piece welded cylinder. Furthermore, corrosion rate on the weldment and base metal of welded LP-gas cylinder was evaluated using the electrochemical tests in acid rain and $3.5\%NaCl$ solution, Also, the poor adhesion and defects of film which was produced by electrostatic powder spray painting, while the LP-gas cylinder was manufactured, were analyzed using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy). And we proposed a optimum coating thickness of the cylinder.
This paper presents a study on the effects of localized steel-concrete bond degradation on the flexural behaviour of RC beams. A finite element analysis is undertaken to complete the experimental analysis. The first part deals with an experimental study on beams where bond was removed by using plastic tube at different locations and for various lengths. The flexural behaviour was studied at global scale (load-deflection) and local scale (moment-curvature). The second part, a numerical study using a simplified special finite element (rust element) modelling the rust layer occurring between reinforcement and concrete with corrosion was conducted in order to find the relation between the degree of corrosion and the degradation of the steel-concrete bond. The computed value of the corrosion degree corresponding to the total degradation of bond has been used in a second time to model the tests, in order to evaluate the influence of the loss of bond, the steel cross section reduction, and the combination of both. The results enable to evaluate the influence of the different corrosion effects on the flexural behaviour, according to the length and the location of the corroded zone.
The corrosion behaviors of twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels with different alloying elements (Cu, Al, Si) in a neutral aqueous environment were investigated in terms of the characteristics of the corrosion products formed on the steel surface. The corrosion behavior was evaluated by measuring potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. For compositional analysis of the corrosion products formed on the steel surface, an electron probe x-ray micro analyzer was also utilized. This study showed that the addition of Cu to the steel contributed to the increase in corrosion resistance to a certain extent by the presence of metallic Cu in discontinuous form at the oxide/steel interface. Compared to the case of steel with Cu, the Al-bearing specimen exhibited much higher polarization resistance and lower corrosion current by the formation of a thin Al-enriched oxide layer. On the other hand, Si addition (3.0 wt%) to the steel led to an increase in grain size, which was twice as large as that of the other specimens, resulting in a deterioration of the corrosion resistance. This was closely associated with the localized corrosion attacks along the grain boundaries by the formation of a galvanic couple with a large cathode-small anode.

In this study, we investigated the corrosion damage characteristics of steel for offshore wind turbine tower substructure using an accelerated electrochemical test. The galvanostatic corrosion test method was employed with a conventional 3 electrode cell in natural sea water, and the steel specimen was served as a working electrode to induce corrosion in an accelerated manner. Surface and cross-sectional image of the damaged area were obtained by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The weight of the specimens was measured to determine the gravimetric change before and after corrosion test. The result revealed that the steel tended to suffer uniform corrosion rather than localized corrosion due to active dissolution reaction under the constant current regime. With increasing galvanostatic current density, the damage depth and surface roughness of surface was increased, showing approximately 25 times difference in damage depth between the lowest current density ($1mA/cm^2$) and the highest current density ($200mA/cm^2$). The gravimetric observation showed that the weight loss was proportionally increased with increment of current density that has 75 times different according by experimental conditions. Consequently, uniform corrosion of the steel specimen was conveniently induced by the electrochemically accelerated corrosion technique, and it was possible to control the extent of the corrosion damage by varying the current density.
