A Case Study of Community-based Service Learning Outcomes (지역사회기반학습 수업 운영 사례와 효과 연구)

  • This paper presents a case study and online-offline (hybrid) course structure for project-oriented community-based service learning in order to solve real-world problems for society. It examines social issues and conduct student projects to develop solutions that can generate sustainable value. This course helps students to use their major knowledge to assess and solve the problems faced by the local community. The outcomes of this course conducted via online lectures and offline project activities are discussed. The operation of this blended type of social problem-solving course is also stated.

Validity Verification of ARCS Evaluation Models for Promoting University Students' Learning Motivation (대학생의 학습동기 촉진을 위한 ARCS 평가모형의 타당화 검증)

  • Due to the lack of learning motivation, there is a need to seek ways to facilitate learning incentives because it's causing drop out and maladjustment of university life. This study is to examine whether the ARCS evaluation model developed by Keller (1983) is a valid model for evaluating the motivation level of local university students sample 276(male 116, female 157) in the Republic of Korea. To analyze the data, average statistic, one-way ANOVA and confirmative factor analysis were used. The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, the level of motivation per ARCS factor has demonstrated the highest relevance factor. Second, the level of motivation by the ARCS for the 1st and 3rd graders was appropriate. Differences in 'attention' and 'relevance' have only been observed for each year, and the 1st grade group was found to be larger than the 2nd grade cohort. Third, construct validity and convergent validity were obtained for measuring the level of motivation. The results of the verification of the variables also showed that the AVE and CR were met, and the model fit well was satisfactory. Based on the finding results, discussion and implication for further research were suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop New-IT internship and to search for the way to reduce quality mismatch and unemployment ratio and to ultimately enhance its effectiveness of university-industry collaboration(UIC) in the field of information technology in Korea. To achieve the goal of this study, we tried to come up with more job creation than working on educational collaboration between university and industry. The survey based on the reaction of companies and interns participating in IT internship program promoted by MKE(Ministry of Knowledge and Economy) shows that intern experience helped them to get jobs and longer intern period gave them to find job more easily. Intern companies preferred to local college students majoring in special technology area related to regional innovation industry cluster. It also found that intern companies wanted to hire interns who had some project experiences and theoretical knowledges. IT Internship program affected students good images about small and medium enterprises(SME) after finishing internship.

Analyses of Female Engineering Education Programs Abroad (해외 여성 공학교육 프로그램의 분석)

  • Women engineering education programs in the United States, Europe and Australia were analyzed. From 1970s, these countries focused on the low representation of women in engineering, and carried out extensive research and programs. Numerous studies identified the causes of low representation as low interests in mathematics and science during K-12 years, classroom environments which treat women differently (often referred as chilly climate), and the masculine culture in engineering. Comprehensive approaches were taken in the development of the programs: the programs utilized the schools and universities as well as various local institutes, and the programs were designed not only for female students from elementary to graduate levels, but also for parents, teachers, professors, and school administrators. In order to adopt these programs in Korea, the problems that Korean female engineering students are facing in the education environment must be investigated first. Then, unified efforts to change the educational system, environments and culture are needed by all in engineering fields, along with nation-wide policies and funding.

  • The world has witnessed the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic. Mainstream and social media are playing an important role in Covid-19 pandemic prevention. This research explores awareness, communication channels and effectiveness of communication in the Covid-19 pandemic in rural areas of Thua Thien Hue province, Central Vietnam. Primary information was collected from 181 respondents, who are farmers, non-farmers and students. Secondary information was collected from reports and statistical data. Television, word of mouth and local loudspeakers are the main channels of mainstream media while social media mentions the role of Facebook and Zalo to transfer Covid-19 pandemic information. Mainstream media is still the main channel of farmers and old people while non-farmers and young people tend to access information through social media. Communication has significantly contributed to improving awareness and action of rural people in the Covid-19 epidemic prevention.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of self-efficacy moderated by social support in the influence of local children's center cultural program commitment on career awareness and development of children and adolescents using Local Children Centers' Services. For this purpose, the questionnaires of local children's center cultural program commitment, career awareness and development, social support, and self-efficacy was conducted to 190 elementary school students in the 3rd grade and middle and high school in 22 children's centers in N city. The statistical packages were SPSS PC+ 25.0 and SPSS MACRO. The main results are as follows: First, cultural program commitment had positive correlation with self-efficacy, social support, career awareness and career development. Also, self-efficacy had a positive correlation with social support, career awareness and career development, and social support had a positive correlation with career awareness and career development. Second, the hypothesis model was supported that cultural program commitment positively affects career awareness mediated by self-efficacy moderated by social support. In other words, the more they participated and commited in cultural programs, the more self-efficacy increased leading to more career awareness. Also, the more social support was felt, the more the positive influence of cultural program commitment on self-efficacy increased. The Recognition Characteristics of Science Gifted Students on the Earth System based on their Thinking Style (과학 영재 학생들의 사고양식에 따른 지구시스템에 대한 인지 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze recognition characteristics of science gifted students on the earth system based on their thinking style. The subjects were 24 science gifted students at the Science Institute for Gifted Students of a university located in metropolitan city in Korea. The students' thinking styles were firstly examined on the basis of the Sternberg's theory of mental self-government. And then, the students were divided into two groups: Type I group(legislative, judicial, global, liberal) and Type II group(executive, local, conservative) based on Sternberg's theory. Data was collected from three different type of questionnaires(A, B, C types), interview, word association method, drawing analyses, concept map, hidden dimension inventory, and in-depth interviews. The findings of analysis indicated that their thinking styles were characterized by 'Legislative', 'Executive', 'Anarchic', 'Global', 'External', 'Liberal' styles. Their preference were conducting new projects and using creative problem solving processes. The results of students' recognition characteristics on earth system were as follows: First, though the two groups' quantitative value on 'System Understanding' was very similar, there were considerable distinctions in details. Second, 'Understanding the Relationship in the System' was closely connected to thinking styles. Type I group was more advantageous with multiple, dynamic, and recursive approach. Third, in the relation to 'System Generalization' both of the groups had similar simple interpretational ability of the system, but Type I group was better on generalization when 'hidden dimension inventory' factor was added. On the system prediction factor, however, students' ability was weak regardless of the type. Consequently, more specific development strategies on various objects are needed for the development and application of the system learning program. Furthermore, it is expected that this study could be practically and effectively used on various fields related to system recognition.

  • Land development policy in Korea, characterized by its supply-oriented policy, has driven rapid economic development. However, it has a negative impact on the natural environment across the country. Especially, as the introduction of quashi-farmland system with the deregulation of agricultural land development in the late 1990s, numerous unfavorable landscape features such as road, motels and apartment have emerged in the rural area. As those interfered irreversible rural landscapes have been expanded, the demand for well preserved rural landscapes have been increased. The objectives of this study, thus, is to suggest the mitigations between the land development and conservation of natural landscape. As such, this study examines the recognition of current rural landscape management status through 118 students with two groups of landscape architecture majored (50 people) and non-landscape majored (68). Both group express the negative impression of current rural landscape management system in general and they pointed out the major landscape problems are caused from inappropriate land use. However, in detail those two groups respond differently, for example, the first group selected the damaged landscape is the second cause of the landscape problem, while the other group selected the poorly maintained settlements. Based on the analysis of the survey, this study suggests 3 recommendations in order to improve the sustainable rural landscape as establishing the proper rural land use planning system, building local governments' capacity to actively participate in the rural landscape management, and preparing the landscape management plans considering area distinctive characteristics.

  • As the demands of island tourism increasing, the importance of information is considered the key success factor of island tourism. This study suggest the several factors that affecting in island tourism based on the previous studies of tourism research domain. the Important Performance Analysis(IPA) that has much popularity in tourism research is used to evaluate the information characteristic and priority of island tourism in university students of Korea. Based on the result of this study, the information of the natural landscape/scenery and the sightseeing related activity have less priority than the facilities and local foodstuff of the specific island. Considering the aspects and levels of currently serviced island tourism information, differentiated information that including the facilities and local foodstuff of island have reasonable priority for establishing effective and efficient island tourism strategy.

The Research Collaboration Pattern of Library and Information Science Field in Korea: Application of Collaboration Indices (국내 문헌정보학 분야의 연구협업 패턴에 관한 연구: - 협업지수의 적용 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics of research collaborations in the field of LIS. While there are several studies under the unit of analysis of country, there are only a few studies under the unit of analysis of institution in LIS field. For this analysis, we selected eight journals in the KCI (Korea Citation Index) web site, which correspond to the field of LIS through subject classification. The collaborative indices, Collaborative Coefficient, Co-Authorship Index, Local Collaborative Index (LCI), Domestic Collaborative Index (DCI) allowed us to comparatively analyze institutional collaboration patterns in LIS field. In the case of Chung-Ang University, Yonsei University, and Ewha Womans University, collaborative research among professors, graduate students, and professors reflected the fact that collaborations among universities are often performed with professors. In the case of KISTI, which showed a very high index value, the characteristics of project-based research are reflected in the research collaboration pattern.
