This paper proposes a new method for accelerating the search speed of genetic algorithms by taking derivative evaluation and conditional random selection into account in their evolution process. Derivative evaluation makes genetic algorithms focus on the individuals whose fitness is rapidly increased. This accelerates the search speed of genetic algorithms by enhancing exploitation like steepest descent methods but also increases the possibility of a premature convergence that means most individuals after a few generations approach to local optima. On the other hand, derivative evaluation under a premature convergence helps genetic algorithms escape the local optima by enhancing exploration. If GAs fall into a premature convergence, random selection is used in order to help escaping local optimum, but its effects are not large. We experimented our method with one combinatorial problem and five complex function optimization problems. Experimental results showed that our method was superior to the simple genetic algorithm especially when the search space is large.
Clustering is a NP-hard problem that is used to find the relationship between patterns in a given set of patterns. It is an unsupervised technique that is applied to obtain the optimal cluster centers, especially in partitioned based clustering algorithms. On the other hand, cat swarm optimization (CSO) is a new meta-heuristic algorithm that has been applied to solve various optimization problems and it provides better results in comparison to other similar types of algorithms. However, this algorithm suffers from diversity and local optima problems. To overcome these problems, we are proposing an improved version of the CSO algorithm by using opposition-based learning and the Cauchy mutation operator. We applied the opposition-based learning method to enhance the diversity of the CSO algorithm and we used the Cauchy mutation operator to prevent the CSO algorithm from trapping in local optima. The performance of our proposed algorithm was tested with several artificial and real datasets and compared with existing methods like K-means, particle swarm optimization, and CSO. The experimental results show the applicability of our proposed method.

The general capacitor placement problem is a combinatorial optimization problem having an objective function composed of power losses and capacitor installation costs subject to bus voltage constraints. In this paper, a global optimization technique, which employing the chaos search algorithm, is applied to solve optimal capacitor placement problem with reducing computational effort and enhancing global optimality of the solution. Chaos method in optimization problem searches the global optimal solution on the regularity of chaotic motions and easily escapes from local or near optimal solution than stochastic optimization algorithms. The chaos optimization method is tested on 9 buses and 69 buses system to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Several design problems of composite structures are studied via a global optimizer based on attraction regions. MSC/NASTRAN is adopted for static and eigenvalue analysis. The method of modified feasible direction in DOT is used for local optimization. Through the review of global optimization algorithms, the triangular patch algorithm is selected because the algorithm is known to be efficient, robust and powerful for general nonlinear optimization problems. For general applicability, various mechanical properties are considered as design objectives; strain energy, eigenvalue, weight, displacement, and buckling load. In all cases considered, the triangular patch algorithm results in a lot of optimum points and useful design patterns, that are not easy by local algorithms or conventional global algorithms can be determined.
We performed calculations combining optimization technologies and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) aimed at reducing wind forces and mitigating wind environments (local strong winds) around buildings. However, the Reynolds Averaged Navier-stokes Simulation (RANS), which seems somewhat inaccurate, needs to be used to create a realistic CFD optimization tool. Therefore, in this study we explored the possibilities of optimizing calculations using RANS. We were able to demonstrate that building configurations advantageous to wind forces could be predicted even with RANS. We also demonstrated that building layouts was more effective than building configurations in mitigating local strong winds around tall buildings. Additionally, we used the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) as an airflow prediction method alternative to CFD in order to increase the speed of optimization calculations, and validated its prediction accuracy.
A research to evaluate efficiency of design optimization was performed for aerodynamic design optimization problem in distributed computing environment. The aerodynamic analyses which take most of computational work during design optimization were divided into several jobs and allocated to associated PC clients through network. This is not a parallel process based on domain decomposition rather than a simultaneous distributed-analyses process using network-distributed computers. GBOM(gradient-based optimization method), SAO(Sequential Approximate Optimization) and RSM(Response Surface Method) were implemented to perform design optimization of transonic airfoil and to evaluate their efficiencies. One dimensional minimization followed by direction search involved in the GBOM was found an obstacle against improving efficiency of the design process in distributed computing environment. The SAO was found quite suitable for the distributed computing environment even it has a handicap of local search. The RSM is apparently the fittest for distributed computing environment, but additional trial and error works needed to enhance the reliability of the approximation model are annoying and time-consuming so that they often impair the automatic capability of design optimization and also deteriorate efficiency from the practical point of view.
Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a stochastic population based optimization algorithm which has attracted attentions of many researchers. This method has great potentials to be applied to many optimization problems. Despite its robustness the standard version of PSO has some drawbacks that may reduce its performance in optimization of complex structures such as laminated composites. In this paper by suggesting a new variation scheme for acceleration parameters and inertial weight factors of PSO a novel optimization algorithm is developed to enhance the basic version's performance in optimization of laminated composite structures. To verify the performance of the new proposed method, it is applied in two multi-objective design optimization problems of laminated cylindrical. The numerical results from the proposed method are compared with those from two other conventional versions of PSO-based algorithms. The convergancy of the new algorithms is also compared with the other two versions. The results reveal that the new modifications inthe basic forms of particle swarm optimization method can increase its convergence speed and evade it from local optima traps. It is shown that the parameter variation scheme as presented in this paper is successful and can evenfind more preferable optimum results in design of laminated composite structures.
The cost of a looped pipe network is affected by a set of loop flows. The mathematical model for optimizing the looped pipe network is expressed in the optimal set of loop flows to apply to a stochastic optimization method. Because the feasible region of the looped pipe network problem is nonconvex with multiple local optima, the Modified Stochastic Probing Method is suggested to efficiently search the feasible region. The method consists of two phase: i) a global search phase(the stochastic probing method) and ii) a local search phase(the nearest neighbor method). While the global search sequentially improves a local minimum, the local search escapes out of a local minimum trapped in the global search phase and also refines a final solution. In order to test the method, a standard test problem from the literature is considered for the optimal design of the paralled expansion of an existing network. The optimal solutions thus found have significantly smaller costs than the ones reported previously by other researchers.
A research to evaluate the efficiency of design optimization was carried out for aerodynamic design optimization problem in distributed computing environment. The aerodynamic analyses which take most of computational work during design optimization were divided into several jobs and allocated to associated PC clients through network. This is not a parallel process based on domain decomposition in a single analysis rather than a simultaneous distributed-analyses using network-distributed computers. GBOM(gradient-based optimization method), SAO(Sequential Approximate Optimization) and RSM(Response Surface Method) were implemented to perform design optimization of transonic airfoils and evaluate their efficiencies. dimensional minimization followed by direction search involved in the GBOM was found an obstacle against improving efficiency of the design process in the present distributed computing system. The SAO was found fairly suitable for the distributed computing environment even it has a handicap of local search. The RSM is apparently the most efficient algorithm in the present distributed computing environment, but additional trial and error works needed to enhance the reliability of the approximation model deteriorate its efficiency from the practical point of view.
This paper describes new optimization strategy that offers significant improvements in performance over existing methods for geometry design of frame structures. In this study, an imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) and ant colony optimization (ACO) are combined to reach to an efficient algorithm, called Imperialist Competitive Ant Colony Optimization (ICACO). The ICACO applies the ICA for global optimization and the ACO for local search. The results of optimal geometry for three benchmark examples of frame structures, demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the new method presented in this work. The results indicate that the new technique has a powerful search strategies due to the modifications made in search module of ICACO. Higher rate of convergence is the superiority of the presented algorithm in comparison with the conventional mathematical methods and non hybrid heuristic methods such as ICA and particle swarm optimization (PSO).
