New X-Y Channel Driving Method for LED Backlight System in LCD TVs

  • This paper proposes a novel RGB-LED (light emitting diode) backlight system, for 32" LCD TVs, accompanied by a new X-Y Channel driving method in which its row and column switches control the individual division screen. This proposed driving method is able to produce division driving effects such as image improvement and reduced power consumption. Not only that, the number of driver needed in this method, that is 3 power supplies with 3*(m+n) switches, is much fewer than that of cluster driving method, that is 3*(m*n) driver.

  • In this paper, a new high-speed local area network using a dual mode switching access (DMSA) protocol implemented on a dual unidirectional bus is described. By utilizing the implicit positionalordering of stations on a unidirectional bus, the proposed system switches between random access mode and the token access model withoug unnecessary delay. Therefore, unlike other hybrid systems such as Buzz-net and Z-net, DMSA does not show a rapid degradation in performance as the load increases. We obtain the average channel utilization and the average access delay by using a simplified analytic model. The numerical results obtained via analysis are compared to the simulation resuls for a partial validation of the approximate model. The performance characteristics of DMSA are superior delay-throughput characteristics at light and medium loads, compared to compared to other LAN systems, and the capability of providing a single active station with full capabity of the channel.

  • Recently, due to abnormal climate phenomena caused by greenhouse gas, flood damage such as local torrential rain has been emerging in Korea. Accordingly, there is a growing need for porous blocks capable of permeability in concrete, but there are limitations in commercialization due to problems such as high unit weight and flexural strength development limitations. This study investigates the unit weight and strength properties of porous blocks using bottom ash as an alternative to aggregate as part of a study to improve the light weight of porous blocks.

  • In the conventional reinforced-concrete bridge deck, concrete and steels are likely to be deteriorated and corroded under the influence of noxious environment. To cope with these problems caused in the conventional reinforced-concrete bridge deck, pultruded composite bridge deck having light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance and durability is developed. For the DB24 truck load pultruded composite bridge deck is designed and fabricated. For the fabricated and assembled deck panel, structural testing such as flexural test, local fatigue test, flexural fatigue test are conducted to verify the deck capacity experimentally. In this paper design for deck profile, details of connection and experimental results of composite bridge deck are presented.

Damage detection in beams and plates using wavelet transforms

  • A wavelet based approach is proposed for structural damage detection in beams, plate and delamination of composite plates. Wavelet theory is applied here for crack identification of a beam element with a transverse on edge non-propagating open crack. Finite difference method was used for generating a general displacement equation for the cracked beam in the first example. In the second and third example, damage is detected from the deformed shape of a loaded simply supported plate applying the wavelet theory. Delamination in composite plate is identified using wavelet theory in the fourth example. The main concept used is the breaking down of the dynamic signal of a structural response into a series of local basis function called wavelets, so as to detect the special characteristics of the structure by scaling and transformation property of wavelets. In the light of the results obtained, limitations of the proposed method as well as suggestions for future work are presented. Results show great promise of wavelet approach for damage detection and structural health monitoring.

  • To develop more compact and light generators which have high capacity, the most important thing that should be considered is the inner cooling system. Under all circumstances, the temperature of rotor and stator windings must be kept below the maximum temperature of insulation to maintain reliability and prolong durability of the machine. Therefore, the development of more effective cooling system and the exact prediction of windings are essential to produce our unique generator model which is reliable and competitive in international market. In this study, the flow of cooling air and the temperature distribution of winding is analyzed by using computational fluid dynamics. This analysis can lead to optimize the structure of cooling system and predict a local temperature rise.

  • To achieve the structural safety of the vehicle, designs in various cases are carried out by using CATIA program. It is promoted the relaxation of stresses by collisions from the front portion, the side part and the rear portion of the vehicle. In this study, we conduct a variety of design of frames for the light weight frame of the vehicle and structural analysis, to protect the driver by adding reinforced frame. In the case of such a collision, there are maximum stresses greater than yield strength of steel and a very large local plastic deformation at the collision part.

  • The mechanism of synthesis of the toacco mosaic virus(TMV) and the potato virus X(PVX) was investigated using the methods of ultraviolet light irradiation and serological analysis. In vitro irradiation of UV on the infected tobacco juice for 10 minutes caused the infectivity of TMV and PVX to decrease markedly on their respective local lesion indicator hosts, Nicotiana glutinosa L. and Gomphrena globosa L., indicating that UV destroys directly the infectivity of the virus particles. Ten minutes after the UV was irradiated on the leaves of the two indicator hosts before inoculation, the infectivity of TMV decreased as it was irradiated in vitro, whereas that of PVX increased by 26% as compared with the unirradiated control. When the two viruses were mix-inoculated in the common host of tobacco and the synthetic products were analyzed by serological methods for a two week infection period, it was found that both viruses were multiplying more rapidly and abundantly than they were singly inoculated into the same host species. Titers from mixed series were often two times as high as those of singly inoculated series. A mechanism of competition in the synthesis between the mixed viruses in the common host is postulated.

The Distance-Dependent Fluorescence Enhancement Phenomena in Uniform Size Ag@SiO2@SiO2(dye) Nanocomposites

  • $Ag@SiO_2@SiO_2$(FITC) nanocomposites were prepared by the simple polyol process and St$\ddot{o}$ber method. Fluorescence enhancement of fluorescein moiety (fluorescein isothiocyanate, FITC) was investigated in the presence of silver nanoparticles in $Ag@SiO_2@SiO_2$(FITC) system with varying thickness (X nm) of first silica shell. Maximum enhancement factor of 4.3 fold was achieved in $Ag@SiO_2@SiO_2$(FITC) structure with the first silica shell thickness of 8 nm and the average separation distance of 11 nm between the surface of silver nanoparticle and fluorescein moiety. The enhancement is believed to be originated from increased excitation rate of fluorescein moiety due to concentrated local electromagnetic field which was improved by interaction of light with silver nanoparticles.

  • The growing significance of corporate social responsibility in the fashion industry has shed light on the importance of preparing fashion students to become socially responsible professionals. In spite of numerous benefits of service-learning, the teaching/learning method has been rarely employed in the fashion design and merchandising context. Therefore, the purpose of the study was first, to examine the concept and models of service-learning and compare different types of service-learning programs, and second, to discuss service-learning projects that were adopted in a visual design class as examples that service-learning can be effectively integrated into the fashion design and merchandising curriculum. This study provides the opportunity to share successful service-learning implementation with other educators to help with effective incorporation of the pedagogical program into the curriculum.
