  • Image interpolation, a technology that converts low resolution images into high resolution images, has been widely used in various image processing fields such as CCTV, web-cam, and medical imaging. This technique is based on the fact that the statistical distributions of the white Gaussian noise and the difference between the interpolated image and the original image is similar to each other. The proposed algorithm is composed of three steps. In first, the interpolated image is derived by random image interpolation. In second, we derive weighting functions that are used to apply non-local mean filtering. In the final step, the prediction error is corrected by performing non-local mean filtering by applying the selected weighting function. It can be considered as a post-processing algorithm to further reduce the prediction error after applying an arbitrary image interpolation algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields reasonable performance.

  • This paper proposes an efficient and yet powerful local descriptor called phase-space partition based descriptor (PPD). This descriptor is designed for the mobile image matching and retrieval. PPD, which is inspired from SIFT, also encodes the salient aspects of the image gradient in the neighborhood around an interest point. However, without employing SIFT's smoothed gradient orientation histogram, we apply the region based gradient statistics in phase space to the construction of a feature representation, which allows to reduce much computation requirements. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that PPD achieves favorable performance close to that of SIFT and faster building and matching. We also present results showing that the use of PPD descriptors in a mobile image retrieval application results in a comparable performance to SIFT.

  • A nonlinear iterative filtering based on local statistics and anisotropic diffusion is introduced. Local statistics determines the diffusion coefficient at each iteration step. Anisotropic diffusion can be seen as estimates a piecewise smooth image from the noisy input image in the experimental section, our results are shown to suppress noise with preserving the edges. Therefore, it enhances the image and improves performance.

  • In order to improve the edge segmentation effect of the level set image segmentation and avoid the influence of the initial contour on the level set method, a saliency level set image segmentation model based on local Renyi entropy is proposed. Firstly, the saliency map of the original image is extracted by using saliency detection algorithm. And the outline of the saliency map can be used to initialize the level set. Secondly, the local energy and edge energy of the image are obtained by using local Renyi entropy and Canny operator respectively. At the same time, new adaptive weight coefficient and boundary indication function are constructed. Finally, the local binary fitting energy model (LBF) as an external energy term is introduced. In this paper, the contrast experiments are implemented in different image database. The robustness of the proposed model for segmentation of images with intensity inhomogeneity and complicated edges is verified.

  • The failure behavior of RC structure was exceedingly affected by the size and the local strain distribution of the failure zone due to the strain localization behavior on the tension softening materials. However, it is very difficult to quantify and assess the local strain occurring in the failure zone by the conventional test method. In this study, image processing technology, which is available to measure the strain up to the complete failure of RC structures, was used to estimate the local strain distribution and the size of failure zone. In order to verify the reliability and validity for the image processing technology, the strain transition acquired by the image processing technology was compared with strain values measured by the concrete gauge on the uniaxial compressive specimens. Based on the verification of image processing technology for the uniaxial compressive specimens, the size and the local strain distribution of the failure zone of deep beam was measured using the image processing technology. With the results of test, the principal tensile/compressive strain contours were drawn. Using the strain contours, the size of the failure zone and the local strain distribution on the failure of the deep beam was evaluated. The results of strain contour showed that image processing technology is available to assess the failure behavior of deep beam and obtain the local strain values on the domain of the post-peak failure comparatively.

  • This paper proposes an improved image segmentation algorithm by the watershed algorithm based on the local adaptive threshold on local minima search and the fixing threshold on label allocation. The previous watershed algorithm generates the problem of over-segmentation. The over-segmentation makes the boundary in the inaccuracy region by occurring around the object. In order to solve those problems we quantize the input color image by the vector quantization, remove noise and find the gradient image. We sorted local minima applying the local adaptive threshold on local minima search of the input color image. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm controls over-segmentation and makes the fine boundary around segmented region applying the fixing threshold based on sorted local minima on label allocation.

  • We propose an adaptive image enhancement method for epigraphic images, which is based on local statistics. Local statistics of the image are utilized for adaptive realization of the enhancement, that controls the contribution of the smoothing or sharpening paths. Image contrast enhancement occurs in details and noises are suppressed in smooth areas. For modeling the epigraphic image, pre~process is achieved by HSDI(Hanzi squeezed digital image). We have calculated the local statistics from this HSDI model. Application of this approach to HSDI has shown that processing not only smooths the background areas but also improves the subtle variations of edges, so that the word regions can be enhanced. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance than the conventional image enhancement ones.

  • This paper proposed a Systolic Arrays architecture for computing edge detection on images. It is very difficult to be processed images to real time because of operations of local operators. Local operators for computing edge detection are to be used in many image processing tasks, involve replacing each pixel in an image with a value computed within a local neighborhood of that pixel. Computing such operators at the video rate requires a computing power which is not provided by conventional computer. Through computationally expensive, it is highly regular. Thus, this paper presents a systolic arrays for tasks such as edge detection and laplacian, which are defined in terms of local operators.

  • Regarding global and local factors of a set of features, a given single image or multiple images is a common approach in image processing. This paper introduces an application of an adaptive version of non-local filter whose original version searches non-local similarity for removing noise. Since most images involve texture partner in both foreground and background, extraction of signified regions with texture is a challenging task. Aiming to the detection of visual attention regions for images with texture, we present the contrast analysis of image patches located in a whole image but not nearby with assistance of the adaptive filter for estimation of non-local divergence. The method allows extraction of signified regions with texture of images of wild life. Experimental results for a benchmark demonstrate the ability of the proposed method to deal with the mentioned challenge.

  • A window-based image processing is an elementary part of image processing area. Because window-based image processing is computationally intensive and data intensive, it is hard to perform ail of the operations of a window-based image processing in real-time by using a software program on general-purpose computers. This paper proposes a parallel hardware architecture that can perform a window-based image processing in real-time using FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array). A dynamic threshold circuit and a local histogram equalization circuit of the proposed architecture are designed using VHDL(VHSIC Hardware Description Language) and implemented with an FPGA. The performances of both implementations are measured.
