A Case of Cerebral Vasculitis in Henoch-Shönlein Purpura (알레르기성 자반증에 병발한 대뇌 혈관염 1례)

  • Henoch-Sh${\ddot{o}}$nlein Purpura(HSP) is an immuologically mediated systemic vasculitis of small blood vessels affecting predominantly the skin, gastrointestinal tract, joints, and kidneys. Clinical neurological manifestations such as headaches, behavioral changes, mental changes, seizures, and visual loss are described, but neurological complication are rare during the course of HSP. We experienced a case of an 8 year-old male with HSP who presented with seizures. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) showed multiple high signal intensity in both cortical and subcortical areas of frontal and parieto-occipital lobes and magnetic resonance(MR) angiogram showed stenosis of cerebral arteries, compatible with MRI and MR angiogram findings of cerebral vasculitis. We report this case with related literature.

Cholangiocarcinoma and Cloacal Prolapse in a Yellow-crowned Amazon Parrot (Amazona ocrocephala) (아마존앵무에서 병발한 담관암종과 총배설강 탈출증)

  • This report deals with a 3-year-old male Yellow-crowned Amazon (Amazona orcrocephala) that died after twenty five days history of cloacal prolapse. On necropsy, multiple to occasionally coalescing well-demarcated tan nodules were scattered throughout the entire liver lobes. The nodules were firm and slightly elevated from the surface. The neoplastic nodules were also recognized on cut sections of the liver. Histologically, the nepatic nodules consisted of cuboidal to low columnar cells forming tubular to acinar pattern with marked desmoplasia. The neoplastic cells had small to moderate amounts of eosinophilic cytoplasm and round nucleus with one to two prominent nucleoli. Based on these results, hepatic nodules was diagnosed as primary cholangiocellular carcinoma.

  • The posterior cerebral arteries supply the temporal and occipital lobes of the left cerebral hemisphere and the right hemisphere. Clinical symptoms associated with occlusion of the posterior cerebral artery are visual abnormalities including opposite visual field defects, hallucination, visual amnesia and a variety of other symptoms, including confusion, cognitive disorders, thalamic syndrome, Weber's syndrome, contralateral hemplegia. This case report is about a patient with visual and cognitive abnormalities caused by posterior cerebral artery infarction. He was regarded as Soyangin(少陽人) in constitution and was treated with Yangkyuksanhoa-tang(凉膈散火湯) and other treatments. Improvement in his general symptoms was observed.

  • A gerotor pump is suitable for oil hydraulics of machine tools, automotive engines, compressors, constructions and other various applications. Especially the pump is an essential machine element of an automotive engine to feed lubricant oil. The subject of this paper is the theoretical analysis of the internal lobe pump which is a particular type of positive displacement pump. The main components of the pump are rotors; usually the outer rotor profile is characterized by lobes with circular shape, while the inner rotor profile is determined as conjugate as the outer rotor profile. For this reason the topic presented here is the definition of the geometry of the rotors starting from the design parameters. The choice of these parameters is subject to some limitations in order to avoid cusp and loop between rotors. And the integrated system which is composed of three main modules has been developed through AutoLISP & Visual Basic and CAD considering various design parameters. It generates automatically an designed model for a general type of a gerotor pump and allows us to calculate two performances indexes commonly used for the study of positive displacement pumps: the flow rate and flow rate irregularity. Results obtained using the system enable the designer and manufacturer of oil pump to be more efficient in this field.

Pathologic Studies in Piglets Naturally Infected with Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (돼지 생식기 호흡기 증후군 바이러스 자연감염 예의 병리학적 연구)

  • Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus infection (PRRSV) was confirmed by serology histopathology immunohistochemistry and bacteriologic examination in young pigs. Four suckling and six weaned piglets submitted from three different farms showed coughing sneezing labored rapid abdominal respiration lethargy and anorexia. Grossly apical and cardiac lung lobes appeared mottled with pale to dark tan discoloration. Submandibular and bronchial lymph nodes were tan and enlarged. All piglets were seropositive for PRRSV antibodies by the indirect immunofluorescent antibody(IFA) test. Microscopically lung lesions were characterized by hyperplasia and hypertrophy of type 2 pneumocytes infiltration of mononuclear cells in alveolar intersitium accumulation of necrotic debris in alveolar spaces accompanied by proliferation of alveolar multinucleated syncytial cells. Using immunohistochemical technique PRRSV antigens were demonstrated in alveolar macrophages and type 2 pneumocytes in histologic lung tissue sections. Also PRRSV antigens were detected in brain lymph nodes spleen and heart. Additionally piglets showed nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis mandibular necrotic lymphadenopathy splenic atrophy and myocardial necrosis.

  • Two 2 and 7 months-old holstin and one 3 months-old native Korean calf suffering from respiratory illness were submitted to the National Veterinary Research Institute for euthanasia and pathologic examination. At necropsy diffuse lobar pneumonia was present in apical cardiac and diaphragmatic lobes in all calves. Microscopically acute multifocal bronchiolitis and interstitial syncytial cell formation were frequently observed. in addition occlusion of bronchiolar lumen due to cellular proliferation and fibrosis accompanied by interlobular septal emphysema were also present. Immunohistochemically bovine respiratory syncytial virus antigen were positively identified in lung lesions including bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium alveolar macrophages and lymphocytes.

A Study on performance analysis of screw rotor profiles (스크류 로터 치형의 성능해석에 관한 연구)

  • To design high-effective profile in screw rotor profile using in screw compressor, we design the symmetric type changing the number of lobes and the non-symmetric type changing the neighbourhood of the top point of lobe. Then, we calculated the performance value of profile according to the scale of these non-symmetric's wrap angle. We had the results as follows. 1. About the non-symmetric case, the larger a wrap angle is the shorter seal line is and the smaller blow hole is, thus we know what the large wrap angle profile is better than the small one. 2. We know what the non-symmetric profile is better than the symmetric profile in the result of the compare of seal line's length, blow hole's area, volume curve. 3. About the non-symmetric case, the deformation of the neighbourhood of lobe's top point of the rotor profile has a large effect upon the increase of performance because the length of seal line became short and the area of blow hole is small.

Morphology and Ecological Notes on the Larvae and Pupae of Simulium (Simulium) from Korea

  • Morphological features of larvae and pupae of twelve species of Simulium (Simulium) from Korea are investigated and redescribed. Detailed descriptions of immature stages of each species are provided with photographs. For the Korean members of subgenus Simulium, combinations of the following characteristics can be used to separate them from other Korean subgenera: larval abdomen without a pair of conical-shaped ventral tubercles; postgenal cleft variously shaped, viz., miter shaped, spearhead, bullet shaped or triangular; rectal papillae 3 simple lobe or compound lobes; pupal gill of 6-16 filaments; cocoon shoe, boot or slipper shaped; and head trichomes 3 pairs (1 facial+2 frontal). Habitat information and other ecological aspects of each species are provided. Updated keys to larvae and pupae of the Korean species of the subgenus Simulium are also provided to facilitate species identification. Taxonomic treatment based on external morphologies of larvae and pupae of Korean species of the subgenus Simulium are focused and included in this study. To understand their interspecific relationships, phylogenetic analyses using multiple data from molecule, morphology, and ecology are warranted in future research. Also continued exploration for new character systems is needed to establish more stable boundaries for subgenus and species delimitations.

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytologic Findings of Thyroid Lymphoma -Report of Two Cases- (갑상선 림프종의 세침흡인 세포학적 소견 -2 예 보고-)

  • We report two different types of thyroid lymphoma associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Both showed autoantibodies and were compatible with Hashimoto's thyroiditis according to their clinical backgrounds. A 76-year-old female noted a painless, rapidly growing mass in her neck which was diagnosed as diffuse non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, large cell type, after the fine needle aspiration cytology of the thyroid. She underwent chemo-radiotherapy and is free of the disease 10 months after diagnosis. The other patient, a 73-year-old female with a diffuse golfer, was diagnosed on fine needle aspiration cytology as having Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Three years later she developed a hard nodular growth in the both lobes of the thyroid. This was subjected to fine needle aspiration cytology and needle biopsy and was diagnosed as a MALT lymphoma. She refused any treatment and died 12 months after the diagnosis.

Effects of a Neurofeedback Program on Brain Function and Stress in High School Students (뉴로피드백 프로그램이 고등학생의 뇌기능과 스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was done to determine the effects of a neurofeedback program on brain function and stress in occupational high school students. Method: A nonequivalent control group, non-synchronized with pre-posttest design was used with 62 students. Data collection was done from July to December, 2007. The neurofeedback training was given for 30 minutes at a time, three times a week for 12 weeks. Brain function was measured by brain waves in the frontal lobes of the students and analyzed by eight brain quotients characterizing patterns of EEG rhythms. The instrument used to measure stress was a scale for stress from regular daily life. Results: After neurofeedback training, the level of brain quotients in students in the experiment group increased(t=2.36, p<.05) and the level of stress decreased(t=-3.59, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of the study suggested that a neurofeedback program is effective for brain function improvement and stress reduction in high school students. Therefore, the conclusion of this study is that neurofeedback programs can be useful to increase brain function and decrease stress in occupational high school students.
