  • The information on local stress acting in a bridge is required in many occasions such as fatigue assessment. The analysis by beam elements cannot yield this class of information adequately, while the finite element modeling of an entire long-span bridge by shell elements is impractical. In the present study, the hybrid modeling is tried out: only part of a bridge in which the point of interest is located is discretized by shell elements and the remaining part is modeled by beam elements. By solving a simple box girder problem, the effectiveness of this approach is discussed. This technique is then applied to the Rama IX Bridge for local stress evaluation. The numerical results compare very well with the results of a full-scale static loading test. The present research thus offers a practical yet accurate technique for the stress analysis of a long-span cable-stayed bridge.

  • We apply the Finite Fracture Mechanics criterion to address the problem of a V-notched structure subjected to mode II loading, i.e., we provide a way to determine the direction and the load at which a crack propagates from the notch tip and express the critical conditions in terms of the generalized stress intensity factor. Weight functions for V-notch emanated cracks available in the literature allow us to implement the fracture criterion proposed in an almost completely analytical manner: the determination of the critical load and the direction of crack growth is reduced to a stationary point problem. A comparison with experimental data presented in the Literature concludes the paper.

  • while they cannot overcome the limitation that arises in the process of representing the 3D real world to the 2D plane. Also, there exists requirements on performance to support realtime navigation capability. In this paper, therefore, we propose a cell loading algorithm for navigating virtual space that can support realtime visualization according to the multimedia objects in variety and the change of the view point by user, and that can accommodate the capacity imposed in the process of navigation regardless of the number of objects.

  • Carbon powders (CP) and carbon fiber (CF) were introduced info glass fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) composites to obtain fracture detection function. The composites were evaluated through the relation between a load-displacement curve and an electrical resistance change curve in three point bending test. CP containing FRP (CP-FRP) has a sensitivity of electrical resistance change at much lower load level than CF containing FRP (CF-FRP). In loading-unloading tests, CP-FRP showed a large amount of residual electrical resistance which enables the estimation of loading hysteresis.

  • This study is aim to evaluate of the flexure toughness of fiber reinforced concrete with ring type steel fiber. The experiment proceeding ASTM C 78 is performed to make a comparision between the ring type flber and the double-hook type fiber which is recently come in to use. The size of the test specimen is 10$\times$10$\times$35mm and the flexture test is proceeded by third-point loading method. The test lasts until 2mm deflection and the loading speed is 0.01mm/min by deflection control. From the experimental results, the specimens with ring type fiber of 30kg/㎥ and 30mm diameter of ring circle show much higher toughness indices than those of the double-hook type fiber of 30kg/㎥ and 30mm long.

  • A FEA(finite element analysis model) was proposed to study stress and strain distributions in thick composites with fiber waviness and initial curvature under flexural loading. Three types of model with initial curvature were considered in this study: flat, concave and concave models. In the analysis, both material and geometrical nonlinearities were incorporated. Four point flexural tests were conducted on the flat specimens to obtain the flexural behavior of thick composites experimentally. It was concluded that the predictions from the models were in good agreement with the experimental results. It was shown that the stress and strain distributions as well as nonlinear flexural behaviors of thick composites were significantly affected by the fiber waviness and initial curvature.

  • A simulation analysis is presented for the position control of a single-link flexible manipulator whose end-effector is subjected to an impulsive force. Arm is rotated by a d.c. servomotor at the shoulder so that the end point stays precisely at its initial position even if the end effector is thumped with the impulsive loading. A gap sensor is used to measure the tip displacement. The control torque based on the PD control law is applied to the motor through the driver circuit. The control strategy is tested by means of computer simulation for the one-link flexible-arm prototype in the authers' laboratory at Tohoku Univ.

  • The studies are conducted to investigate the fatigue and fracture, behavior of preflex girder. In this work, the fatigue tests using by constant amplitude fatigue loading and 4-point-loading to maintain pure bending condition in the mid-span of preflex girder will be performed. It is expected from the results of the studies to provide the fatigue strength and the S-N curve of preflex girders. In addition, it will be ensured that fracture initiation occurs in the welded part of horseshoe-type shear connector as well as in other welded joints.

  • The shear behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams with web opennings has been scrutinized experimentally to verify the influences of the structural parameters such as size, shape, location and reinfrocements of web openings, and shear span ratio. A total of 22 specimens has been tested under one or two point loading conditions at the laboratory. In the tests most specimens have shown shear failures with inclined cracks from the loacing points to the supports through openings. The ultimate strengths of the specimens measured from the tests have shown wide differences depending on the locations of the openings which deter the formation of the compression struts between the loading points and the supports. The effects of the reinforcements and the geomtry of the openings on the shear strengths and the crack developments have been carefully checked and analyzed.

  • A decision support system DSS-WQMRA (Decision Support System-Water Quality Management in Rural Area) was developed to help regional planners for the water quality management in a rural basin. The integrated model DSS-WQMRA, written in JAVA, includes four subsystems such as a GIS, a database, water quality simulation models and a decision model. In the system, the GIS deals with landuse and the location of pollutant sources. The database manages each data and supplies input data for various water quality simulation models. the water quality simulation model is composed of the GWLF( Generalized Watershed Loading Function), PCLM(Pollutant Loading Calculation Module) and the WASP5 model. The decision model based on mixed integer programming is designed to determine optimal costs and thus allow the selection of managemental practices to meet the water quality criteria. The methodology was tested with an example application in the Bokha River Basin, Kyunggi Province in Korea. It was proved that the integrated model DSS-WQMRA could be very useful for water quality management including the non-point source pollution in rural areas.
