  • A pile is compressed with settlements when loading and bearing capacity is altered along relative displacement of pile/soil on settlement and compression. Settlements of pile displaying limit skin friction is different from displaying tip resistance. Therefore, it is an error in traditional method that bearing capacity of pile is estimated from the sum of limit skin fraction and tip resistance. Accordingly, development of design method considering behavior of load-settlement is needed. In this study, we would like to establish the base for development of design method considering bearing capacity altering along displacement on settlement and compression. For this, we established system and substance of design method. And in order to establish relationship of load-settlement of pile on the type of soil, we analyzed and arranged existing database and pile loading test. On design method, settlement is assumed gradually on each capacity level being assumed gradually. Bearing capacity developing on the pile is obtained on each settlement level. Until the obtained bearing capacity will be equal to assumed capacity, this process is continued with increasing settlement. Load-settlement curve for soil classification is sketched in the process computing settlement on assumed capacity. This design method will be materialized by computation program.

  • In this paper, elastic and inelastic behavior of exterior joint of moment-resisting R.C frame with non-seismic detail subjected to reversed cyclic lateral load such as earthquake excitations was investigated. 1/2-scals subassemblage exterior beam-column joint including slab was manufactured based on similitude law. Then, pseudo static test under the displacement control was performed. The results of 1)crack pattern and failure mode, 2)degradation stiffness and strength, energy dissipation capacity from load-displacement hysteresis curve, 3)strain of steel were analysed.

  • Alumina composite reinforced by chopped alumina fiber was fabricated by filter-pressing the fiber slurry followed by the infiltration of alumina slurry. The chopped fiber was coated with nickel by electroless plating method. The green samples were densified by hot-pressing. Microstructures were studied by SEM and the mechanical properties such as bending strength and fracture toughness were measured. The resulting mechanical properties were analyzed in relation with processing parameters such as preform density and resulting microstructures. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer but without Ni inclusion showed brittle fracture mode due to the direct contact between matrix and fiber. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer and Ni inclusion in the matrix which is introduced by high applied pressure during specimen preparation showed non-brittle fracture mode due to the fiber pull-out and dutile phases in the matrix.

  • Tape cast laminar composites with alumina/zircon(reaction-bonded mullite/zirconia) as an inner layer and alumina/zirconia or mullite/zirconia as an outer layer have been fabricated by hot-pressing. The mechanical properties(hardness and Young's modulus) and microstructure of laminar composites were examined using a nanoindentation technique and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), respectively. The indentation load-displacement curve revealed the existence of residual stress in laminar composites.

  • In general, a drilled shaft embedded in weathered rock has a large load bearing capacity. Therefore, most of the load tests are performed only up to the load level that confirms the pile design load capacity, and stopped much before the failure load of the pile is attained. If a reliable failure load value can be extracted from the premature load test data, it will be possible to greatly improve economic efficiency as well as pile design quality. The main purpose of this study is to propose a standard for judging the reliability of the failure load of piles that is obtained from extrapolated load test data. To this aim, eleven static load test data of load-displacement curves were obtained from testing of piles to their failures from 3 different field sites. For each load-displacement curve, loading was assumed as 25%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% of the actual pile bearing capacity. The limited known data were then extrapolated using the hyperbolic function, and the failure load was re-determined for each extrapolated data by the ASCE 20-96 method (1997). Statistical analysis was performed on the reliability of the re-evaluated failure loads. The results showed that if the ratio of the maximum-available displacement to the failure-load displacement exceeds 0.6, the extrapolated failure load may be regarded as reliable, having less than a conservative 20% error on average. The applicability of the proposed standard of judgment was also verified with static load test data of driven piles.

  • A disc spring consists of a conical disc. A load-displacement formula was newly developed in the form of energy method to consider both rigid and friction. The cross section of the disc spring has identical slope angles at the bottom of conical. To solve such a problem, an energy method calculation is proposed. To achieve the goal of this study, the proposed calculation is extended to a disc spring with friction. A firm basis background study based on Almen's work is presented in developing a new numerical approach to predict the available formulation for a disc spring with friction.

  • The load distribution and deflection of offshore piles are investigated by lateral load-transfer curve method (p-y curve). Special attention is given to the soil-pile interaction and soil resistance of 3D wedge failure mode. A framework for determining a hyperbolic p-y curve is proposed based on theoretical analysis and experimental load test results. The methods for determining appropriate material parameters needed for constructing the proposed p-y curves are presented in this paper. Through comparisons with field case studies, it was found that the proposed method in the present study estimates reasonably the load transfer behavior of pile, and thus, the computed pile responses, such as bending moment and lateral displacement, agree well with the actual measured responses.

  • This paper has presented a finite element analysis of structural behaviour of box culvert during and after fires. The fire tests were carried out in a furnace on RC slabs using the ISO 834 standard fire curve. The load capacity after cooling of the RC slab that was not loaded during the fire tests was evaluated by means of additional 3 points bending tests. In the past, stress-strain models of concrete under fire loading have been proposed by several researchers. Comparisons are made with the load-displacement relations of RC slabs after fire loading using the existing stress-strain models with temperature, such as Schneider, EUROCODE 2, Lie, Shi and Nan model. By comparing the load-displacement relations, Lie model was found to result in a maximum load about 2.0% higher than that of test. Based on the fire test results of RC slabs, this paper presents an extensive analytical study on the fire response of box culvert during and after fires.

  • In recent times, there has been a growing need to retrofit and strengthen reinforced concrete (RC) structures that have been damaged. Numerous studies have explored various methods for strengthening RC beams. However, there is a significant dearth of research investigating the utilization of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) for retrofitting damaged RC beams within a concrete frame. This study aims to develop a finite element (FE) model capable of accurately simulating the nonlinear behavior of RC beams and subsequently implementing it in an RC concrete frame. The RC frame is subjected to loading until failure at two distinct degrees, followed by retrofitting and strengthening using Ultra high performance shotcrete (UHPS) through two different methods. The results indicate the successful simulation of the load-displacement curve and crack patterns by the FE model, aligning well with experimental observations. Novel techniques for reinforcing deteriorated concrete frame structures through ABAQUS are introduced. The second strengthening method notably improves both the load-carrying capacity and initial stiffness of the load-displacement curve. By incorporating embedded rebars in the frame's columns, the beam's load-carrying capacity is enhanced by up to 31% compared to cases without embedding. These findings indicate the potential for improving the design of strengthening methods for damaged RC beams and utilizing the FE model to predict the strengthening capacity of UHPS for damaged concrete structures.
