  • In this article, a mathematical model is developed to predict the dynamic behavior of bio-inspired composite beam with helicoidal orientation scheme under variable axial load using a unified higher order shear deformation beam theory. The geometrical kinematic relations of displacements are portrayed with higher parabolic shear deformation beam theory. Constitutive equation of composite beam is proposed based on plane stress problem. The variable axial load is distributed through the axial direction by constant, linear, and parabolic functions. The equations of motion and associated boundary conditions are derived in detail by Hamilton's principle. Using the differential quadrature method (DQM), the governing equations, which are integro-differential equations are discretized in spatial direction, then they are transformed into linear eigenvalue problems. The proposed model is verified with previous works available in literatures. Parametric analyses are developed to present the influence of axial load type, orthotropic ratio, slenderness ratio, lamination scheme, and boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of composite beam structures. The present enhanced model can be used especially in designing spacecrafts, naval, automotive, helicopter, the wind turbine, musical instruments, and civil structures subjected to the variable axial loads.

  • This paper describes experimental study on GM-type pulse tube refrigerator (PTR). In a PTR, the pulse tube is only filled with working gas and there exists secondary flow due to a large temperature difference between cold-end and warm-end. The stability of secondary flow is affected by orientation of cold-head and thus, the cooling performance is deteriorated by gas mixing due to secondary flow. In this study, a single stage GM-type pulse tube refrigerator is fabricated and tested. The cooing performance of the fabricated PTR is measured as varying cold-head orientation angle and the results are used as reference data. Then, we divided interior space of pulse tube into three segments, and fixed the various size of screen mesh at interface of each segment to suppress the performance degradation due to secondary flow. For various configuration of pulse tube, no-load test and heat load test are carried out with the fixed experimental condition of charging pressure, operating frequency and orifice valve turns. From experimental results, the fine screen mesh shows the effective suppression of performance degradation for the large orientation angle, but the use of screen mesh cause the loss of cooling capacity rather than the case of no insertion into pulse tube. It should be compromised whether the use of screen mesh in consideration of the installation limitation of a GM-type pulse tube refrigerator.

  • Current efforts to establish links between geometrical features and mechanical performance of nonwoven fabrics in general, and of point-bonded (spot-bonded) nonwovens in particular has been made using the measurements of Fiber Orientation Distribution Function (ODF) and tensile modulus which occurs during controlled-deformation experiments. Image analysis technique (using the Fast Fourier Transform) was used to quantify the fiber orientation distribution. The results suggest that, within a typical window of processing conditions, the fiber orientation has a significant influence on the anisotropical behavior of nonwoven. The data also suggest that mechanical anisotropy of thermally point-bonded nonwovens is likely to be governed by different load transfer mechanism according to the applied macroscopic tensile direction.

  • This paper is concerned with a fracture strength study of composite adhesive lap joints. The tensile and peel tests were carried out on specimen manufactured hybrid stacked composites such as the polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer. The main objective of the work was to test the failure strength of adhesive bonded joints using hybrid stacked composites with a polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer adjacent to the fiber orientation. From results, the load directional orientation, small amount and low thickness of bamboo natural fiber layer have a good effect on the tensile and peel strength of natural fiber reinforced composites. and these characters are have a great influence on fracture strength and failure shape of adhesive bonded joints using hybrid stacked composites in the difference of fiber orientation.

  • In superconducting power devices including power cables in which high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes are utilized, a reliable electrical insulation should be achieved for its maximum performance. For an efficient design of HTS superconducting devices, a comparative evaluation of the mechanical and thermal propperties for various insulation materials at cryogenic temperatures is required. Especially, in the process of the property evaluation of the sheet-shaped insulation materials, anisotropy according to the machining direction should be considered because the mechanical and thermal properties are significantly influenced by the sample orientation. In this study, the cryogenic thermal and mechanical properties of various insulation material sheets such as PPLP, Cryoflex, Teflon, and Kapton were determined considering sample orientation. All samples tested at cryogenic temperature showed significantly higher tensile strength as compared with that of room temperature. The ultimate tensile strength at both temperature conditions significantly depended upon the sample orientation. The thermal properties of the insulation materials exhibited a slight difference among samples depending on the orientation: for the PPLP and Cryoflex, the CD orientation showed larger thermal contraction up to 77 K as compared to the MD one. MD samples in PPLP and Cryoflex showed a lower CTE and thermal contraction which made it more promising as an insulation material due to its comparable CTE with HTS CC tapes.

  • Investigated whether fiber orientation distribution of twisted yarn composites and the fiber content are 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ direction tensile strength and some correlation. Tensile strength of 0$^{\circ}$ directions of twisted yarn composites increased changelessly being proportional the fiber content and fiber orientation function get into anisotropic in isotropic. But, tensile strength ratio by separation of fiber filament of 90$^{\circ}$ directions tensile strength decreased when tensile load is imposed for width direction of reinforcement fiber. 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ direction tensile strength ratio value of a twisted yarn composites not receive almost effect of the fiber content of fiber orientation function J = 0.4 lows. Although do, 20 wt% of the fiber content is high about 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ direction tensile strength ratio about 1.6~2 than 10 wt% from J = 0.4. Therefore. could know that effect of the fiber content is dominate.

  • There are many researches to make low-energy building. Lots of them focus on facility systems and insulation performance of building materials. However, not only systematic solutions but also approaches in early design stages are important to reduce energy consumption. Using BIM(Building Information Modelling) is considered as an effective and efficient way to simulate building energy and decide alternatives than traditional energy simulation because BIM based energy simulation makes to reduce much time for energy modeling. This study focuses on development of optimized geometry for super tall office buildings in Seoul, Korea. Specifically, length to width ratio and building orientation are main topics of this study because these two topics are the most basic and preceding factors deciding mass design. In this study, Revit MEP 2011 and Ecotect Analysis 2011 are used to make case models and calculate energy load in early design stages. Energy properties of material abide by Korean Standards for Energy Conservation in Building, Korean Guideline for Energy Conservation in Public Office and ASHRAE Standard in USA. This study presents best length to width ratio of plan and optimized orientation by evaluating the case models. Furthermore, this study suggests what should be considered for each case to decrease energy load.

  • This study, a new concept design of the stem and aims to determine the suitability of various carbon/PEEK composite designs for artificial hip joints. Shear stress tested with alternative materials of the Ti-based stem for artificial hip joints. In addition, FEA is conducted according to the fiber ply orientation and the load condition for carbon/PEEK composites. The stem shape of two types was designed through the shape normal of the femur. Multidirectional load cases were used for each FEA model. In the case of general shape, the results show that the stress of ply orientation case II was lower than for cases I and III. On the other hand, in the case of the curved shape, ply orientation case I was lowest. In the case of the Ti stem, the stress of the curved shape was 18% lower than the general shape.
