During last 4 decades of industrial development, apartment has been rapidly disseminated throughout the nation. Its main progress, however, only appeared in quantity, not in quality. To promote housing industry in more way and to enhance peoples' life quality through the better housing environment, housing plan should be based on living items including furniture, appliances and etc. Not enough research has been done to find out living items for better house plan development and furniture design. Among living items, furniture reflects both directly and indirectly people's lifestyle and way of living. This study attempted to find out the pattern of furniture possession which people own in their bedrooms. An in depth questionnaire survey of 600 households was carried during the year 2000. A variety of patterns were found which indicated diverse living conditions within a very similar uniform multifamily apartment complex. The result of this study will be helpful to understand the living conditions in a more systematic way and to generate new concept for both residential unit plan and furniture design.

Furniture is a medium to interconnect the living space to human, and it is the closest environmental element that limits the functions of the space, defines the style of the living, and adjusts the actions and behaviors of human. Therefore the furniture can be said to be one of the craft arts that reflects the culture and living style as they are according to the periodical, regional, and social stratum characteristics. Within this context, this study tries to suggest new design and living culture that can harmonize with the modern residence living culture and incorporate the traditional varnishing technique with lacquer that had been discontinued. Coming to the modern days, the varnishing with lacquer is getting attention again with its environment friendly characteristics and antibiotic functions, and is being applied to various applications. To inherit and maintain such an excellent traditional culture, I would like to improve the practicality by applying to modern furniture, and to contribute to develop and tell the world about the superiority of our culture.

With the coming demographic avalanche as the number of elderly aged 65 and older is expected to double in 20 years in South Korea, the concept of retirement living will be changed in a whole new way. The newest design principles as environmental affordance system for them need to be considered. This study started with the premise that 'Aging in Place' might be the most desirable alternative for the elderly and if so, they may be at greater challenge of living in the home, especially in kitchen. The purpose of this study is to analyze various universal design kitchen products according to five Universal Design criteria with physical or mental characteristics of aging. The five Universal Design principles are 'Supportiveness', 'Adaptability', 'Communicability', 'Pleasantness' and 'Accessibility', which were developed from the previous research. The profile and the trends of the universal design kitchen products were identified with the concrete design examples. The results will be expected to make contributions to developing universal design guidelines for kitchen products, to understanding the nature of universal design paradigm, and to establishing directions for sustainable living of the elderly.

Communication has increasingly become important between peoples in the modern society. The change in the composition of a family brought by urbanization and industrialization caused structural changes in the society, and the lack of communication between people have incited various social conflicts rising from individualism and ego-centrism. Thus in this era, domestic environment is one of the most significant environment that enables one to transform into an appropriate member of the social community as well as develop appropriate traits of one. The living room, which served as an arena of communication for family members is now replaced with TV, a popular media, and has lost its original role in the house. The living room furnitures today are designed to facilitate people in viewing TV, not to enhance communication between family members. Thus in this research, I would like to propose a new concept of 'communication furniture' and various examples to suggest appropriate, desired role of living room furniture in households today. In addition, I hope this research contributes to forming a beneficial living room culture and a domestic environment as well as a heart-warming, human society.

The purpose of this study were to design and develop the user centered desk which considered children with cebral palsy in Korea. The developing process of the desk were performed the convergence study of the University Department of the Social Welfare and the Living Furniture Design. First of all, the 2 students and their professor of the Department of Social Welfare analyzed the literature, observed the children with cebral palsy and the needs survey of the service providers of a Welfare Center for children with cebral palsy. All of the information gathered were provided for the Department of the living Furniture Design. Second, the 2 students and their professor of the Department the Living Furniture Design proceeded the design concept, mocked up the desk for the children with cebral palsy. This was the user centered desk which considered of the features of children with cebral palsy body. Based on the results, the convergence study implications were discussed.

In the 21st century, universal design has started to expand as new design value system for the diversity and various need of user: a new design that can reflects the welfare of the society. In addition, the percentage of population over 65 years old has been rising rapidly in Korea, and we are expected to reach 'aged society' with 14.3% of elderly population in 2018. In rural districts, population of the elderly has already reached 'super-aged society' with over 20%. With the rapid increase of the number of the elderly, the need for social service system is rising. For the independent living of the elderly, the dwelling space that supports their lifestyle is the most important factor. In advanced countries, they have proposed the housing for the elderly to keep living in their house, improvement of housing quality that fits the changing various needs of them. Until now, however, the most housing condition that the elderly has lived is poor living environment as below housing standards, especially housing in rural districts is very poor. The purpose of this study was to extract issue of housing in the rural districts in terms of universal design concept and reflecting the cultural and living characteristics of rural districts. With this, additionally, this study make understood about the necessity and important of universal design housing to reflect the characteristics of rural districts. For this study, data were collected from field survey and interview. The major results showed the following. 1) There were very various type of housing in rural districts. Spatial composition and shape was not related to living behavior and cultural characteristics of rural district. 2) The most new constructed housing was similar to urban housing type. It means that housing with respect to living culture of users in rural district must be developed. 3) In rural housing, they all had outdoor building (included storehouse, bathroom/toilet, kitchenet, etc.) relating to a series of work behavior. However, living environment was not to meet needs and characteristics of users.

Nowadays living space has been small-sized due to a rise in the standard of living, change of recognition on the increase of housing for the singles, and frequent movements of duty place, etc. and the furnitures naturally evolved assembly and multi-functionality. However, it retuned with an economic charge in the consumers and lost the uniformity in a small-sized living space as well since the furniture depended on the each miscellaneous household goods or products and came to be used. Hereupon it was demanded the system where the various furnitures are to fit to here. This study aimed at this point firstly examined a new environment change which it follows till a small living space is demanded through lots of literature, after understanding the concept of the system furniture, I classified expressive types of system furniture in modern environment and analyzed the design quality and characteristics in it by selecting well-known furniture magazines inside and outside of the country and extracting and analyzing system furniture images which are recorded in advertisements or articles. The objective of this study is to present MMC(Multi Modular Coordination, a system furniture design based on this analysis that inquiring the problems with function, structure, assembly which other existing system furnitures are facing enabled to apply a basic data in unit-module planning and by sampling embodiment modeling by uses.

Households of today tend to gradually change from a large household to a small one. The tendency starts from urban concentration of population with modern industrial society. Small-sized households have rapidly increased with the following three reasons: (i) one-person households with aging society, (ii) individualistic pursuit of happiness, and (iii) emergence of single households due to high prices and a decline in the quality of life. With these social changes, various products for small-sized households have been created and there have also been changes in dwelling patterns with small-size housing and one rooms increasing. Current small-sized living space has combined space of a living room, a bedroom and a kitchen, which makes a house compositive space. A bathroom, however, requires a differentiated suggestion from existing one since it is special space where water is used. Based on this issue, this study intends to present bathrooms in small-sized living space.

The shift to more practical and simpler lifestyle in the modern society is well reflected in people's preference when it comes to living room space and sofa designs. These elements are intentionally crafted to satisfy the customers' personal needs and wants, sense of comfort, aesthetic preference, and function. This study includes an analysis on the development and conceptualization of sofa designs, exterior materials, and colors of the furniture released by Hanssem, Livart, Borneo, Emons, and Jangin Furniture during the first half of 2007. Modern and practical sofas should be essentially designed according to the customers' demand and current trend. Such design principle is necessary to achieve and maintain competitiveness in the globalizing society.
