  • Rural decline due to the decrease of the local population is an inevitable phenomenon, and a vicious cycle has been formed between a lack of basic living services and a population decrease in rural areas. Therefore, the study aims to derive the migration decision-making characteristics based on basic living service infrastructure data in rural areas. To do this, the population change over the past 20 years was categorized into six types, and the relationship between the classified population change types and the number of basic living service infrastructures was analyzed using decision tree analysis. Of the total 3,501 regions, 801 regions were the continuous decline type, of which 740 were rural areas. On the other hand, among 569 regions that were the continuous increase type, 401 regions were urban areas, confirming the population imbalance between rural and urban areas. As a result of the decision tree analysis on the relationship between population change types and the distribution of basic living service infrastructure, the number of daycare centers was derived as an important variable to classify the continuous increase type. Hospitals, parks, and public transportation were also found to be major basic living services affecting the classification of population change types.

  • This study was conducted to examine the relationship between socio-familial characteristics and health status in early stage of elderly life. In this study, a total of 252 Korean males and females aged 55 to 74 were interviewed to obtain information on various socio-familial characteristics such as age, gender, residence, marital status, education, religion, distance with children, household size, and living arrangements. They were also examined for self-perceived depression and diagnosed health problems. The analysis of the results show that marital status, gender, and living arrangement were major characteristics differentiating health status; widowed women living apart from their children are at lower level for most items of hea1th status such as emotional, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and muscle and skeletal function. Based on this analysis, suggestions are made for efficient health management. First, widowed females living without children are encouraged to participate in regular health promotion programs in self-organized groups. Second, usual welfare service programs need to be segregated for each age group, so that relatively young elderly are not frustrated from being treated together with extremely frail older elderly. Third, low education group living in rural area are offered preventive medical services for muscular and skeletal related health problems.

  • The purpose of the study was to explore what factors influenced the elderly's prospective inheritance types such as traditional, equal, practical, and non-inheriting type. The role of older parents' socio-demographic and intergenerational characteristics affecting a decision on each pattern was paid special attention to. I used the nationally representative data from 10,469 older parents living independently in the '2008 Korean National Survey of Welfare Need in the Elderly'. Results showed that prospective inheritance types among the elderly were diverse. The type which pursues equal distribution of wealth to all the children emerges predominantly from them. Findings also suggested that inheritance types were associated with factors such as both individual and intergenerational variables. Furthermore, different factors had different impact on each type. Individual variables contributed more to equal types while intergenerational variables contributed to practical types. More interestingly, both individual and intergenerational factors affected non-inheriting types. Further research is necessary to investigate what mechanisms will be operating through the process of inheritance, which social policies will be substituted for the inheritance, and what other variables will account for the intergenerational transmission of wealth.

  • In order to inspect the danger of forest fires, the thermal characteristics and the ignitability of the dead leaves and the living leaves for the main species of trees in Youngdong areas have been studied by the TG/DTA and the group flammability tester. From this work, the thermal delay has been increased with the increase of the heating rate. The fractions of the thermal weight loss for the dead leaves and the living leaves of the coniferous trees were higher than those of the broadleaf trees. Also, it was confirmed that the ignitable dangers of the dead leaves and the coniferous trees were higher than those of the living leaves and the broadleaf trees, due to the low auto ignition temperature and thermal resistance.

  • As the number of North Koreans defectors entering South Korea with their family members increases, it becomes more important to explore the family characteristics that facilitate their adjustment. The data used in the present study was collected from a survey of 195 North Korean defectors. The aim of this study was to investigates how the structural and relational aspects of family influence the socio-cultural adjustment of North Korean defectors. The structural characteristics of family life included whether or not the defectors exited with their family members, whether they were living with family members, and whether they were living with family members under the age of 18. The relational characteristics included family cohesion and adaptability. The study results showed that living with young family members was negatively associated with the social activity restriction problems commonly perceived by North Korean defectors. Family cohesion was also negatively associated with the social activity restriction problems and positively associated with the social isolation problems. The results of this study also showed that family adaptability was not significantly associated with any socio-cultural adjustment problems.

  • Housing may be construed as a place where people are settled for living, namely, family members make a home and a place, where all human living is grounded. Also, the common housing type of a certain time reflects the living of the time. With the advent of the lifestyle of a new social class attaching importance to the multi-purpose of act and function, complexity, and convenience from the 21st century, people required a housing space where work, rest, living, and recreational activities are overlapped, fused, and integrated on the axes of space and time. In addition, along with the expansion of network and digital convergence from a social perspective, the appearance of new businesses, products, and business models affects the life and culture of consumers, which leads to the destruction of the borders and spheres throughout society. Thus, the study analyzed the characteristics of the spatial organizational type of collective housing in Japanese cities since the 1990s and withdrew the organizational type of each room in order to identify the uniquely differentiated characteristics of Japanese housing.
