Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease characterized by the progressive degradation of joint cartilage and is accompanied by secondary inflammation of synovial membranes. The purpose of this study describes a preliminary evaluation of the anti-inflammatory activity on test material of Litsea japonica. fruit (LJTM) Also, this study was to evaluate the effects of LJTM on the joint cartilage of rat with OA induced by monosodium iodoacetate (MIA). To study for anti-inflammatory agents effectively, we first examined the inhibitory effect of the LJTM on the production of pro-inflammatory factors and cytokines stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. We identified anti-nociceptive effects of the LJTM by using in vivo peripheral and central nervous pain models. In addition, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects on mRNA expression of MMP-2, -3, -7, -9, -13, TIMP-1 and –2 in cartilage of OA. In the LJTM inhibited production of pro-inflammatory mediators (NO and PGE2) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6). In cartilage, Expression of MMPs and TIMPs mRNA was suppressed in LJTM treatment group than in the control group. This study suggests that LJTM are potential candidates as anti-inflammation and anti-osteoarthritis agents (painkillers) for the treatment of OA.
The purpose of this study was to suggest vegetation management Planning and plant community structure of Camellia Japonica forest at Hakdong, Kojedo, Hallyo-Haesang National Park. Forty-six plots(l00$\m^2$/plot) were established in Camellia japonica forest and surveyed. By DCA ordination technique and mean importance value analysis, the plant communities were classified into four community types, which were Camellia japonica community, Camellia japonica-Eurya japonica community, Camellia japonica-Neolitsea sericea community, Chumaecyparis obtusa-Camellia japonica community. It was supposed that Camellia japonica-Neolitsea sericeu community succeeded to Neolitsea sericea community. The others would not be replaced by another woody species. The vegetation management for successional controls in long-term basis were suggested; for the short-term basis, the species of Chamaecyparis obtusa, Neolitsea sericea and Eurya japonica should be removed. The species of Quercus serrata, Prunus sargentii, Meliosma myriantha, Machilus thunbergii and Litsea japonica. must be controlled under the long-term management of vegetation.
In this study, the amount of seedlings and seed dispersal of evergreen broad-leaved trees in forest community adjacent to Camellia japonica forest were studied to provide basic information for effective management of evergreen broad-leaved forest. Evergreen broad-leaved trees including C. japonica, Neolitsea sericea, Machilus thunbergii, Ligustrum japonicum, Cinnamomum japonicum, Litsea japonica, Pittosporum tobira showed high density and ratio of seedlings in community adjacent to C. japonica forest. Although individual densities of N. sericea, M. thunbergii, L. japonicum were low, their seedlings were distributed up to Pinus thunbergii and coniferous broad-leaved forest at a distance of 100m and 200m from C. japonica forest. Distribution of DBH class of C. japonica suggested a continuous spread from higher frequency of young individuals, N. sericea, M. thunbergii and L. japonicum did not showed an obvious trend. Seed of C. japonica mainly dispersed within 50m from mother tree.

The object of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effects of Litsea japonica fruit flesh extract (LJF-HE) on gastritis of an stress-induced SD rat model. Rats were randomly divided into six groups: Normal (normal group), Control (stress-induced gastritis), Ranitidine (stress-induced gastritis and ranitidine 50 mg/kg), LJF-HE-L (stress-induced gastritis pretreated with L. japonica fruit flesh extract at 30 mg/kg), LJF-HE-M (stress-induced gastritis pretreated with L. japonica fruit flesh extract at 60 mg/kg), LJF-HE-H (stress-induced gastritis pretreated with L. japonica fruit flesh extract at 120 mg/kg). In groups treated with LJF-HE, gastric mucosal damage and pepsin activity were reduced. Additionally, there were decreases in the expression of cholecystokinin 2 receptor (CCK-2r) in the gastric lesions. The plasma levels of IL-$1{\beta}$ slightly but significantly decreased in LJF-HE treated groups compared to control. The plasma level of PGE2 was also significantly increased in LJF-HE treated groups. These results suggest that LJF-HE has the ability to reduce of the severity stress-induced gastritis.
This paper contains the results obtained by ecological investigation of flora in Sogumoon Island of the southern coast in Korea. Fifty varieties, 455 species, 322 genera and 104 family of Tracheophyta were recorded island showed a plant community predcominated by Pinus thunbergii grwon in miggle with Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Machilus thunbergii, Litsea japonica, Albizzia julibrissin, Carpinus coreana, Carpinus laxiflora, Mallotus japonica and Clerodendron trichotomum. Sixtythree species in Sogumoon Island and 64 species in Pogil Island of evergreen broad-leaved trees were recorded by this investitgations. The plant resources of this island were 203 species. The evergreen broad-leaved trees of this island wre valuable for landscaping material plants and the evergreenherbs were valuable for foliage-plants resources. The flora breaking in this island was due to cuttinf for fuel and grazing cattle and goats. Therefore Machilus thunbergii, Ardisia japonica, Ficus miponica, Kadsura japonica, Daphniphyllum macropodum, etc. should be preserved. Autochonous flora of Buxus microphyllac, Fius erecta, Machilus thunbergii, Kadsura japonica, Ardisia japonica, Mitchella undulata, etc. should be preserved.

The present study aimed to investigate comparative anti-inflammatory effects of Litsea japonica fruit and leaf extract considering the balance of safety and efficacy. Dose response studies were performed to determine the inhibitory effects of 70% EtOH extract of leaf (L70%) on the pro-inflammatory enzymes expression, COX-2/PGE2 and NO/iNOS, and pro-inflammatory cytokines production, IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, and TNF-$\alpha$ in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. We also examined comparative effects of 30 and 70% EtOH extract of fruits (F30% and F70%) at low concentration ($10{\mu}g/ml$ ) in the same conditions. L70% at 50 and $100{\mu}g/ml$ showed inhibitory effects on almost all the inflammatory mediators we examined except for COX-2 regulation, but there were no effects at $10{\mu}g/ml$. Since $100{\mu}g/ml$ of L70% have 18.2% cytotoxicity, we compared the effects of fruit extract, F30% and F70% at $10{\mu}g/ml$ on the regulation of NO/iNOS, PGE2, IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, and TNF-$\alpha$ and obtained that fruit extacts are more efficacious and safe than leaf. This study suggests that the 30% EtOH fraction of L. japonica fruit could be a good candidate for development as a functional food supplement in the prevention of inflammatory disorders.

The results obtained from te field investigations of Chuja Island conducted for 5 days from July 18 to 22, 1980 and from August 12 to 16, 1981 are summarized as follows: Vascular plants of this island disclosed by the present study consisted of 86 families, 210 genera, 228 species, 38 varieties and 4 래금. Nineteen species of evergreen broad-leaved trees were discovered, including Litsea japonica Juss, Camellia japonica L. and Machilus thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc. These indeciduous latifoliate trees were preserved in poor condition. Ten-twenty years old Pinus thunbergii was confirmed to be the predominant species. Seaside plants encountered were 6 species, including Vitex rotundifolia L. Fil. and Asterspathullfoius Max., but they were poorly distributed. Naturalized plants comprised a total of 12 species. This varied number of species is considered attributable to the frequent access of men owing to convenient marine traffic. the destruction of vegetation of this island may be attributed to human interference (loggin for boat construction, building and charcoal materials) ever escalated by high population density. It is worthy of noting that Bochmeria penosa Nakai et Stake which forms a large community in this island can be used as textile resources.
This study was conducted to evaluate the vegetation structure of 34 plots for inspection(plot unit: $100m^2$)of evergreen broad-leaved forest in Dongbaekdongsan(Mt.), Jeju-do, Korea. In accordance with the results of TWINSPAN and mean importance percentage analysis, the target forest was aged $28{\sim}52$, and classified into seven community types in total: Ilex rotunda community, Castanopsis sieboldii community, Castanopsis sieboldii-Quercus glauca community, Quercus glauca-Castanopsis sieboldii community, Quercus glauca community, Quercus glauca-Camellia japonica community, and Quercus glauca-Styrax japonica community. According to the results of importance percentage analysis and DBH class distribution of major woody species, the vegetational aspects showed that the dominant species were Castanopsis sieboldii and Quercus glauca in the canopy layer and Camellia japonica in the subordinate layer. Ilex rotunda and Quercus glauca-Styrax japonica community were damaged vegetation in the canopy layer. According to the index of Shannon's diversity in the six communities including the dominant species - Quercus glauca and Castanopsis sieboldii, their species diversity degree was $0.8745{\sim}1.3018$ and that of Ilex rotunda community was the lowest 0.7619. Camellia japonica, Eurya japonica, Ilex rotunda, Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium, Ardisia crenata appeared in all the seven communities. In addition, Litsea coreana and Cinnamomum japonicum as well as Neolitsea serica presumed as climax species in the warm temperate climate also appeared and the constancy ratio of Cinnamomum japonicum was more than 80%. As a result, the target forest in Dongbaekdongsan(Mt.) was mainly compose of Castanopsis sieboldii and Quercus glauca in the canopy layer as a mixed vegetational pattern, and Cameliia japonica was dominant in the subordinate layer. Continuous monitoring was required, since Camellia japonica was strong in the subordinate layer in contrast to the weakness of Litsea coreana and Neolitsea serica reported as the species of climax stage in the forest with Evergreen Broad-leaved Vegetation at a viewpoint of successional direction.
Chodo Archipelago ($125^{\circ}$45 $-126^{\circ}$13 E and $34^{\circ}$15 $-34^{\circ}$25 N, ca. $56.7km^2$), a part of the Dadohae National Marine Park, largely is covered with substitutional vegetation under various human impact such as grazing, cutting for firewood. However natural vegetation is partially distributed in the tutelary shrine forests, deep valleys and etc. From October 1988 to June 1989, phytosociological investigation of this forest vegetation was carried out by Braun-Blanquet s method. The forest vegetation was classified into 1 association and 7 communities. Ardisio-Castanopsietum sieboldii, Machilus thunbergii, Quercus acuta, Litsea japonca, Eurya japonica-Pinus thunbergii mixed forest, Pinus densiflora, Pinus rigida afforestation. Carpinus coreana community. Based on the classification, the actual vegetation map was drawn in 1 : 50,000 scale.
