  • A crustose red alga, Lithophyllum neo-okamurae A.Kato, D.Basso, Caragnano, Rodondi, V.Peña & M.Baba, is reported a new record from Korea and its biogeographic distributions are extended in Korea. Lithophyllum neo-okamurae has been known as endemic species in Japan. Despite the resemblance between L. neookamurae and L. okamurae, our molecular and morphological analyses have revealed the simultaneous presence of both species in Korea. Although L. neo-okamurae and L. okamurae share morphological similarities, there are notable variations in gene sequences, with a range of 9.1-11.3% in psbA and 14.8-15.3% in rbcL. Specifically, while L. neo-okamurae is distributed throughout the entire coastline of Korea, L. okamurae is predominantly found in southern region. Furthermore, our analyses have revealed their detailed distributions in Korea.

  • This study was conducted to screen in vitro angiotensin - I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities of methanol (MeOH) and aqueous extracts at 20°C and 70°C, respectively, prepared from twenty-six red algae obtained from the coast of Jeju Island in Korea. Among aqueous extracts at 20°C (20AE) from red algae Lomentaria catenata showed the strongest ACE inhibitory activity and Lithophyllum okamurae recorded the second highest activity. From MeOH extract at 20°C (20ME) Ahnfeltiopsis flabelliformis possessed the strongest ACE inhibitory activity. Remarkable activities from MeOH extracts at 70°C (70ME) were observed in Grateloupia filicina, Sinkoraena lancifolia and Grateloupia lanceolata. However, no significant activity was found in aqueous extracts at 70°C (70AE). The IC50 values, which are concentrations required to inhibit 50% activity of ACE, for ACE inhibitory activities of 20AE from Lithophyllum okamurae and L. catenata were 13.78 and 12.21 μg mL–1, respectively. The IC50 values of 20ME from A. flabelliformis and Laurencia okamurae were 13.84 and 106.15 μg mL–1. Those of the 70ME from Bonnemaisonia hamifera, Grateloupia filicina, Sinkoraena lancifolia, G. lanceolata, Gracilaria vermiculophylla and L. okamurae ranged from 25.82 to 124.69 μg mL–1.

  • This study was to clarify the variations in a marine ecosystem through examining the species composition of benthic algae in the coast of Dokdo Island during summer (June & August, 2003). The total number of species found in benthic algae was 45 composed of 11% green algae, 29% red algae and 60% brown algae. The dominant species were Enteromorpha linza, Cladophora spp. and Codium frgile for green algae, Ecklonia cave, Eisenia bicyclis, Sargassum confusum, S. patens, S. horneri, Myagropsis myagroides for brown algae and Amphiroa cphedrace. A pusilla, Lithophyllum okamurae, Corallina spp. Laurencia pinnata, L. hamata, Chondria crassicaulit, C. dasyphylla, Gelidium amansii, Neosiphonia yendoi and Polysiphonia yendoi for red algae. The number of benthic algal species decreased more in this study than in previous researches. The whitening of the rocky shore might provoke the decrease of benthic algal biomass and species.

The representative species in this study were Ulva pertusa, Caulerpa okamurae, Codium adhaerens, C. frgile, Undaria pinnatifida, Ecklonia cava, Eisenia bicyclis, Dictyopteris undulata, Padina arborescens, Sargassum horneri, Hildenbrandtia rubra, Lithophyllum okamurae, Amphiroa dilatata, Corallina officinalis, C. pilulifera, Prionitis cornea, Grateloupia elliptica, Plocamium telgairiae, Chondrus ocellatus, Chondracanthus intermedia, Chondria crassicaulis, Polysiphonia morrowii, Melobesioidean algae and Phyllospadix sp. Wet weight biomass according to various depths ranged between 1,094.8 to $2,595.3\;g\;m^{-2}$ during the study period. Mean biomass at the investigated sites was greater in the 15m depth range than in the 5 and 10m depths. Vertical distribution was characterized by Ulva intestinalis, U. linza, Endarachne binghamiae, Bangia atropurpurea, Gloiopeltis furcata and Chondria crassicaulis at intertidal zone, Amphiroa dilatata, Corallina pilulifera, Gelidium amansii, Eisenia bicyclis and Ecklonia cava at 2m depth, Ecklonia cava, Eisenia bicyclis, Padina arborescens, Undaria pinnatifida and Sargasum horneri at 5m depth, Ecklonia cava, Sargassum horneri and Padina arborescens at 10m depth, Ecklonia cava, Myagropsis myagroides, Padina arborescens and Sargassum horneri at 15m depth. The R/P, C/P and (R+C)/P value were 1.67, 0.50 and 2.17, respectively.

  • Marine macroalgal community structures and characteristics of ocean environmental factors were examined seasonally at four sites in Jeju Island, Korea, from March to November 2012. A total of 71 macroalgal species were identified, including 9 green, 7 brown, and 55 red algae. Peyssonnelia capensis occurred at all study sites and in all seasons. The average annual biomass of seaweed was 991.84 g wet $wt/m^2$, with seasonal variations from 543.80 g in autumn to 1,284.17 $g/m^2$ in summer. A green alga, Codium coactum, was the dominant species, occupying 21.31% (211.39 $g/m^2$) of the total algal biomass in Jeju Island. Subdominant species were Ecklonia cava and Lithophyllum okamurae, comprising 20.85% (206.75 $g/m^2$) and 19.64% (194.75 $g/m^2$), respectively, of the total algal biomass in Jeju Island. The vertical distribution of subtidal seaweeds was represented by L. okamurae at 5 m depth, C. coactum at 10 m depth, E. cava at 5-10 m depth and P. capensis at the 20 m depth level. In the present study, crustose coralline algae, which predominated on barren ground, were subdominant species at all study sites. Community indices varied between 0.51-0.63 for dominance index (DI), 5.53-8.14 for richness index (R), 0.51-0.63 for evenness index (J'), and 2.04-2.32 for diversity index (H'). On the basis of seaweed biomass and community indices, Sinchang was the best preserved coastal area, showing maximal values in biomass, and evenness- and diversity-indices, and minimal value in the dominance index, representing stable environmental conditions. In contrast, the Onpyung and Topyeong sites, located near tourist venues such as Udo and Seogwipo were relatively poor habitats based on community indices and biomass. The present results could imply that climate changes alter seaweed community structure, and long-term monitoring of the study sites is required.
