We developed a coin cell battery using high-strength carbon fiber and glass fiber, taking a preliminary step toward creating a battery that supports structural loads and stores energy, with potential applications in satellite structures. High-strength fiber-based electrodes and electrolytes were fabricated and applied to coin cells to evaluate their electrochemical performance. Consequently, the discharge capacities under continuous charge/discharge cycles and high discharge rates of 2 C-rate were determined to be 122.9 and 103.5 mAh/g, respectively, indicating that high-strength fibers can replace conventional battery components. Although current performance is lower than that of commercial batteries, this research has demonstrated significant potential as foundational work for multi-functional energy storage devices and is expected to contribute to the development of structural batteries for satellite applications.
Recently, all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have attracted increasing interest owing to their higher energy density and safety. As the core material of ASSBs, the characteristics of the solid electrolyte largely determine the performance of the battery. Thus far, a variety of inorganic solid electrolytes have been studied, including the NASICON-type, LISICON-type, perovskite-type, garnet-type, glassy solid electrolyte, and so on. The garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolyte is one of the most promising candidates because of its excellent comprehensively electrochemical performance. Both, experiments and theoretical calculations, show that cubic LLZO has high room-temperature ionic conductivity and good chemical stability while contacting with the lithium anode and most of the cathode materials. In this paper, the crystal structure, Li-ion transport mechanism, preparation method, and element doping of LLZO are introduced in detail based on the research progress in recent years. Then, the development prospects and challenges of LLZO as applied to ASSBs are discussed.

In this work, the solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) composites, which are composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), mesoporous mobil crystalline material-41 (MCM-41), and lithium salt, are prepared in order to investigate the influence of MCM-41 contents on the ionic conductivity of the composites. The crystallinity of the SPE composites was evaluated using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The ionic conductivity of the SPE composites was measured by the frequency response analyzer (FRA). As a result, the addition of MCM-41 into the polymeric mixture prohibited the growth of PEO crystalline domain due to the mesoporous structures of the MCM-41. The $P(EO)_{16}LiClO_4$/MCM-41 electrolytes show an increased ion conductivity as a function of MCM-41 content up to 8 $wt\%$ and a slightly decreased conductivity over 8 $wt\%$. These ion conductivity characteristics are dependent on a change of polymer crystallinity in the presence of MCM-41 system.
L $i_{0.5}$F $e_{2.5-{\chi}}$R $h_{\chi}$$O_4$ ($\chi$ = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00) has been prepared by solid state reaction. Crystallographic and magnetic properties were investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and x-ray diffraction. The crystal structure is found to be a cubic spinel structure with space group Fd3m for all the samples. The lattice constant $a_{0}$ increases from 8.3365 $\AA$ to 8.3932 $\AA$ with increasing Rh concentration $\chi$. The migration of Li ion has been confirmed by x-ray patterns and the results of applied field Mossbauer analysis. The temperature dependence of the absorption area of each site was analyzed with the Debye model for the recoil-free fraction. The Debye temperature for the octahedral sites is almost as large as for the tetrahedral sites, thereby suggesting similar inter-atomic binding forces for the octahedral and the tetrahedral sites. The saturated magnetic moment and the Mossbauer spectra taken at 4.2 K under the applied field (6 T) show that the spin structure of L $i_{0.5}$F $e_{2.5-{\chi}}$R $h_{\chi}$$O_4$ is compatible with the collinear Neel Model.
The cathode material, $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$, for high voltage applications of Li-ion batteries exhibits impurity phases due to oxygen deficiency during the high temperature heat treatment. The impurity phase reduces the electrochemical properties of the electrode since the deficiency spinel structure disturbs the lithium ion intercalation and deintercalation. In this study, Cr-substituted $LiNi_{0.5-x}Mn_{1.5}Cr_xO_4(0{\leq}x{\leq}0.05)$ powders are synthesized by a sol-gel method in order to reduce the amount of the impurity phases in the $LiNi_{0.5-x}Mn_{1.5}Cr_xO_4$. Thermal analysis of the cathode material shows that the $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$ without Cr substitution looses $2\%$ of its weight due to oxygen deficiency but the amount of weight loss is diminished when Cr is substituted. XRD analysis also supports the reduction of the impurity phases in the cathode after chromium substitution, suggesting that the improvement of the electrochemical properties such as the capacity retention and electrochemical stability are attributed to the low content of impurity phases in the Cr-substituted $LiNi_{0.5-x}Mn_{1.5}Cr_xO_4.$
In order to address many issues associated with large volume changes of silicon, which has very low electrical conductivity but offers about 10 times higher theoretical capacity than graphite (Gr), a silicon nanoparticles/hollow carbon (SiNP/HC) composite having bimodal-mesopores was prepared using silica nanoparticles as a template. A control SiNP/C composite without a hollow structure was also prepared for comparison. The physico-chemical and electrochemical properties of SiNP/HC were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements for surface area and pore size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, galvanostatic cycling, and cyclic voltammetry tests to compare them with those of the SiNP/C composite. The SiNP/HC composite showed significantly better cycle life and efficiency than the SiNP/C, with minimal increase in electrode thickness after long cycles. A hybrid composite, SiNP/HC@Gr, prepared by physical mixing of the SiNP/HC and Gr at a 50:50 weight ratio, exhibited even better cycle life and efficiency than the SiNP/HC at low capacity. Thus, silicon/carbon composites designed to have hollow spaces capable of accommodating volume expansion were found to be highly effective for long cycle life of silicon-based composites. However, further study is required to improve the low initial coulombic efficiency of SiNP/HC and SiNP/HC@Gr, which is possibly because of their high surface area causing excessive electrolyte decomposition for the formation of solid-electrolyte-interface layers.

Safety issues in Li-ion battery system have been prime concerns, as demands for power supply device applicable to wearable device, electrical vehicles and energy storage system have increased. To solve safety problems, promising strategy is to replace organic liquid electrolyte with non-flammable solid electrolyte, leading to the development of all-solid-state battery. However, relative low conductivity and high resistance from rigid solid-solid interface hinder a wide application of solid electrolyte. Composite electrolytes composed of organic and inorganic parts could be alternative solution, which in turn bring about the increase of conductivity and conformal contact at physically rough interfaces. In our study, composite electrolytes were prepared by combining poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) and $Li_7La_3Zr_2O_{12}$ (LLZO). The crystallinity, morphology and electrochemical performances were investigated with the control of LLZO contents from 0 wt% to 50 wt%. From the results, it is concluded that optimum content and uniform dispersion of LLZO in polymer matrix are significant to improve overall conductivity of composite electrolyte.
Solvent extraction of Li(I) from weak HCl solution was investigated by the mixture of TBP/MIBK with other neutral extractants such as Cyanex 923, TOPO and TOP. The TBP/MIBK organic phase was loaded with 0.1 M $FeCl_3$ at different HCl concentrations (1-9 M). Extraction of Li(I) from weak HCl solution is related to the stability of $FeCl_3$ in the organic mixture. As HCl concentration increased in preparing the loaded TBP phase, the stripping percentage of Fe(III) during the extraction of Li(I) became reduced and thus Li(I) could be extracted by ion exchange reaction with hydrogen ion in the organic. The concentration of TBP in the extractant mixture affected the stability of $FeCl_3$. Compared to TBP, Fe(III) was easily stripped from the loaded MIBK and thus no Li(I) was extracted by the mixture with MIBK. The nature of neutral extractant with TBP/MIBK showed little difference in the extraction of Li(I) and stripping of Fe(III).

This study presents a comprehensive study on the synthesis and characterization of PVI-PGMA/LiTFSI polymeric membrane electrolytes and CxNy-C flexible electrodes for energy storage applications. The dual-functional PVI-PGMA copolymer exhibited excellent ionic conductivity, with the PVI-PGMA73/LiTFSI200 membrane electrolyte achieving the highest conductivity of 1.0 × 10-3 S cm-1. The electrochemical performance of the CxNy-C electrodes was systematically investigated, with C3N2-C demonstrating superior performance, achieving the highest specific capacitance of 958 F g-1 and lowest charge transfer resistance (Rct) due to its highly interconnected hybrid structure comprising nanowires and polyhedrons, along with binary Co/Ni oxides, which provided abundant redox-active sites and facilitated ion diffusion. The presence of a graphitic carbon shell further contributed to the enhanced electrochemical stability during charge-discharge cycles. These results highlight the potential of PVI-PGMA/LiTFSI polymeric membrane electrolytes and CxNy-C electrodes for advanced energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries, paving the way for further advancements in sustainable and high-performance energy storage technologies.
The use of lithium-ion batteries increases significantly with the rapid spread of electronic devices and electric vehicle and thereby an increase in the amount of waste batteries is expected in the near future. Therefore, studies are continuously being conducted to recover various resources of cathode active material (Ni, Co, Mn, Li) from waste battery. In order to recover the cathode active material, black mass is generally recovered from waste battery. The general process of recovering black mass is a waste battery collection - discharge - dismantling - crushing - classification process. This study focus on the crushing/classification process among the processes. Specifically, the particle size distribution of various samples at each crushing/classification step were evaluated, and the particle shape of each particle fraction was analyzed with a microscope and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy)-EDS(Energy Dispersive Spectrometer). As a result, among the black mass particle, fine particle less than 74 ㎛ was the mixture of cathode and anode active material which are properly liberated from the current metals. However, coarse particle larger than 100 ㎛ was present in a form in which the current metal and active material were combined. In addition, this study developed a PBM(Population Balance Model) system that can simulate two-species mixture sample with two different crushing properties. Using developed model, the breakage parameters of two species was derived and predictive performance of breakage distribution was verified.
