  • Solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) is an electrochemical energy device which converts the free energy of fuel gas directly to electric energy. SOFC has several diratinct advantages over other types of fuel cells: no use of noble metals, no requirement of a reformer, no problem of liquid electrolyte management, and no problem of corrosion by liquid electrolyte. In this study, we have investigated the cell components and the single cell of the planar SOFC fabricated by composite plate process, in which green films of electrolyte, anode and cathode were co-fired. The planar SOFCs were tested and the cell performance characteristics wag evaluated by using electrochemical methods.

  • Numerical simulation is performed for a microdroplet deposition on the pre-patterned micro-structure. The liquid-air interface is tracked by level set method improved by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The method is further extended to treat the contact angle condition at an immersed solid surface. The present computation of a patterning process using microdroplet ejection demonstrates that the multiphase characteristics between the liquid-gas-solid phases can be used to overcome the patterning error.

  • Non-steady hot wire method was adopted to measure thermal coductivity of paraffin wax in the phases of liquid and solid for the utilization of thermal energy storage. The instrument was tested with the measurement of thermal conductivity of water at various temperatures. The reproducibility of the instrumetn was found to be ${\pm}2%$, in which the results for water agree with the literature values. The thermal conductivity of paraffin wax varies from 0.177 W/m C to 0.236 W/m C when the phase changes from liquid to solid near the melting temperature.

  • Continuous casting of the Al-Cu-Ni ternary eutectic alloys was carried out by the upward continuous casting process. The morphology of the ternary eutectic growth and the stability of solid-liquid interface were investigated under various growth conditions. It was possible to get the planar solid-liquid interface at the condition of $G_L/R=3.59{\times}10^3^{\circ}C\;sec/mm^2$ in Al-Cu-Ni ternary eutectic alloys. In Al-rich, Ni-rich and Cu-rich hypereutectics of Al-Cu-Ni ternary alloys, primary ${\alpha},\;{\tau}\;and\;{\theta}$ dendrites have grown as the leading phase ahead of the ternary eutectic composites.

  • Directional solidification of Al-Ti peritetic alloys was carried out using Upward Continuous Casting Process. The morphology of a solid-liquid interface and solidification microstructures were investigated under various crystal growing conditions. The experimental results were compared with those attained by the Bridgman method. The cell spacing of the Al-Ti peritetic alloys and the primary dendrite arm spacing of the Al-Ti peritetic alloys decreased with an increase in pulling speed. The primary ${\beta}$ phase of the Al-Cr and Al-Ti peritectic alloys did not appear in solidification microstructures because of the depleted solute contents in the melt ahead of the solid-liquid interface.

  • Rumen liquor characteristics and disappearance rate of dry matter were studied in Kedah-Kelantan cattle and swamp buffaloes fed grass of rice straw-based diet. Cobalt-EDTA and chromium mordented fibres prepared from the faecal material were used to determine the liquid and solid particles movement in both animal species fed with rice straw. Swamp buffaloes showed a more intense rumen fermentation activity than Kedah-Kelantan cattle when both species were fed straw-based diet. The buffaloes also demonstrated faster rates of grass and straw degradation in situ. The fluid outflow rate from the rumen of buffalo ($1.06{\pm}0.19l/h$) was observed to be slower than that of cattle ($1.55{\pm}0.01l/h$). No significant differences between cattle and buffaloes were observed in rumen fluid volume and passage rate of small particles from the rumen.

  • In the previously reported Part I and Part II, the experimental results in the frictional machining under liquid atmospheres to obtain the best surface roughness were showed. In the present study the frictional machining was carried out in gas atmospheres such as air, oxygen, dioxide carbon and argon, and in solid lubricant atmosphere of graphite powder. The results were compared with those of Part I and Part II. The material to be tested and machining conditions were made identical with Part I and Part II. The best surface roughness obtained in the above gas and solid lubricant atmospheres was worse than the liquid atmospheres but the contact pressure to minimize the surface roughness was considerably low. The best surface roughness in the present study was obtained in the atmospheres of dioxide carbon and graphite powder and the worst one was in oxygen and argon gas.

  • ZnO nanowlres (NWs) were fabricated using Au as catalyst for a method combining laser ablation cluster formation and vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth. The target used in synthesis was pure ZnO ceramics. Two different substrates were used; (0001)-oriented sapphires and Au-coated sapphires. The Au thin film was deposited by thermal evaporation and the thickness was about 50 ${\AA}$. ZnO NWs were only formed in case of that used catalyst metal. Field effect scanning electron microscopic (FESEM) investigation showed that the average diameter of ZnO NWs was about 70 nm and the typical lengths varied from $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$.

  • Spray dispersion in high pressure diesel engines have been simulated experimentally with a special emphasis on the effect of swirl by using a liquid injection technique. A constant volume chamber was designed to be rotatable in order to generate a continuous swirl and to have the flow field closely resembling a solid body rotation. Emulsified fuel was injected into the chamber and the developing process of fuel sprays was visualized. The effect of swirl on the spray dispersion was quantified by calculating non-dimensionalized dispersion area according to the spray tip penetration length. The results show that the effect of swirl on the spray dispersion is different between short and long spray penetrations. For short range of spray tip penetration, the effect of swirl on spray dispersion is quite small. However, as the spray tip is penetrated into longer distance in spray chamber, the effect of swirl on spray dispersion becomes larger. These results can be used as a basic data for designing combustion chamber and injection system of direct injection diesel engine.

  • The present experiments have been performed for obtaining the melting heat transfer characteristics of micro-encapsulated solid-liquid phase change material and water mixed slurry flow in a circular tube heated with constant wall heat flux. The phase change material having a low melting point was selected for a domestic cooling system in the present study. The governing parameters were found to be latent heat material concentration, heat flux, and the slurry velocity. The experimental results revealed that the increase of tube wall temperature of latent microcapsule slurry was lower than that of water caused by the heat absorption of fusion.
