Effect of Electric field on an Injection Velocity in a Vertically Aligned Nematic Liquid Crystal (수직배향 네마틱 액정셀에서의 주입속도에 미치는 전기장 효과)

  • Injection time of liquid crystal (LC) by capillary action in a vertically aligned (VA) nematic LC cell takes longer than that in a homogeneously aligned (HA) LC cell because Miesowicz viscosity in the former is bigger than that in the latter. To reduce liquid crystal injection time in the VA cell, we applied vertical electric field while injecting so that the orientation of LC molecules is changed from vertical alignment to homogeneous alignment. Consequently, the injection speed is improved by 25 % when compared with the cell without an applied field.

  • This paper investigates on the performance of liquid magnetic compass measuring the concomitant angle of the directional system by the kind of compass and the coefficiant of viscosity of the liquid of ones in accordance with the turning angular velocity of the compass bowl in artificial horizontal magnetic fields. The obtained results are as follows; 1. The concomitant angle is to be in proportion to the coefficiant of viscosity of the liquid of compass and the turning angular velocity of the compass bowl, but ones is to be in contrary proportion to the magnetic moment of the magnetic needle and the horizontal geomagnetic. 2. The overdevelopment of the concomitant angle keeps on regularly at any optional degree in the turning angular velocity over$\pi$ radian per minute, but varies periodically at 180 degree below 3 $\pi$ radian per minute.

Microscopic Spray Characteristics in the Effervescent Atomizer with Two Aerator Tubes

  • An experimental study is performed on atomization characteristics and stable operating conditions for the injection of high viscous waste vegetable oil using an effervescent atomizer with 2 aerator tubes. Consideration is given to the effects of ALR and liquid viscosity on the velocity and mean diameter of the injected droplet. It is found that (i) as ALR increases, the axial velocity of the droplet is increased, while half-velocity width and SMD are decreased regardless of the change in liquid viscosities, (ii) the rate of fine drop distribution occupied in the total spray field is increased with an increase in ALR, and (iii) the effect of viscosity on the atomization characteristics is minor. Consequently, it is expected that the effervescent atomizer will exhibit an excellent atomization performance at the high ALR condition, regardless of liquid viscosities.

  • A new paradigm for the viscosity of fluid is presented by considering the fact that the viscosity is equal to the shear stress divided by the shear rate. The shear stress is obtained from the sum of kinetic and internal pressures of fluid, and the shear rate is found from the phonon velocity divided by the mean free path of the phonon. The calculated viscosities for various simple substances are in excellent agreements with those of the observed data through the wide temperature range covered both of liquid and gas phase.

A Study on Physicochemical Characteristics and Sensory Evaluation According to Development of Herbal Sauces of Jujube and Omija (대추와 오미자 약선소스의 이화학적 밑 관능적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Hydrothermal extraction from dates was done, and then 3 groups of the date extract liquid group (A), the date puree group (B) and the jujube skin flesh group (C) were prepared. And, the omija extract liquid was added to the 3 groups at respective rates of 3:7, 5:5 and 7:3. Then, total 9 medicated diet sources were prepared by adding cinnamon, the ginger extract liquid, honey and pectin. And their physicochenmical and sensory attributes were examined. Total sugar, free sugar and pH increased in the samples of the 3 groups as the addition amount of the jujube extract increased. In chromaticity of respective samples, the "L" value did not show any difference among the 3 groups, but the "a" value was the highest in the "A"group, and "b"value was the highest in the "B"group. In the date puree group and the jujube skin flesh group, their viscosity increased as the addition amount of the jujube extract increased, but in the jujube extract liquid group, no difference was found in its viscosity. As a result of conducting the discrimination test, it was identified that the as the addition amount of the jujube extract was increased, color and sweet taste were feltto be stronger and our taste was felt to be weaker in all 3 groups. In the jujube puree group and the jujube skin flesh group, as the addition amount of the jujube extract increased, the jujube fragrance was felt to be stronger, but in the jujube extract liquid group, no difference was found in its fragrance. And, no difference was found in brightness and viscosity between samples. As a result of conducting the palatability test, no difference was showed in the appearance, but as for the overall palatability including texture, taste and fragrance, preference increased as the addition amount of the jujube extract increased.

Continuous Viscosity Measurement of Non-Newtonian Fluids over a Range of Shear Rates Using a Mass-Detecting Capillary Viscometer

  • A newly designed mass-detecting capillary viscometer uses a novel concept to continuously measure non-Newtonian fluids viscosity over a range of shear rates. A single measurement of liquid-mass variation with time replaces the now rate and pressure drop measurements that are usually required by capillary tube viscometers. Using a load cell and a capillary, we measured change in the mass flow rate through a capillary tube with respect to the time, m(t), from which viscosity and shear rate were mathematically calculated. For aqueous polymer solutions, excellent agreement was found between the results from the mass-detecting capillary viscometer and those from a commercially available rotating viscometer. This new method overcomes the drawbacks of conventional capillary viscometers meassuring non-Newtonian fluid viscosity. First, the mass-detecting capillary viscometer can accurately and consistently measure non -Newtonian viscosity over a wide range of shear rate extending as low as 1 s$\^$-1/. Second, this design provides simplicity (i. e., ease of operation, no moving parts), and low cost.

Physical Properties of Lithium Co-polyelectrolyte Based on Imidazolium and Ammonium-type Ionic Liquids

  • Lithium co-polyelectrolyte-ionic liquid systems, using poly (lithium 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propanesulfonate; PAMPSLi) and polyvinyl formamid (PVF) were prepared and their electrochemical and physical properties were measured. The conductivity of co-polymer systems, PAMPSLi/PVF/N, N-dimethyl-N-propyl-N-butylammonium tricyanomethanide (PAMPSLi/PVF/$N_{1134}$TCM) and PAMPSLi/PVF/N, N-dimethyl-N-propyl-N-butylammonium dicyanamide (PAMPSLi/PVF/$N_{1134}$DCA) exhibited low viscosity ($N_{1134}$TCM:$N_{1134}$DCA 28.6cP, 28.7cP) and higher conductivity ($2.48{\times}10^{-3}Scm^{-1}$, $2.2{\times}10^{-3}Scm^{-1}$) than homopolymer system. The ionic conductivity PAMPSLi/PVF/1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium dicyanamide (PAMPSLi/PVF/emImDCA) exhibited $1.54{\times}10^{-3}Scm^{-1}$ and low viscosity (emImDCA: 28.09cP). High flexibility of imidazolium cation and dissociation of lithium cation from the co-polymer chains were affected by high conductivity and low viscosity.

  • This study focused on the charateristic of magnetic fluids, the viscosity deviation of magnetic fluids due to temperature changes, and fabrication of a 'purely' liquid type microvalve. The viscosity of magnetic fluids decreases sharply during increasing of temperature. The viscosity of magnetic fluids is rated 1,000 cP at the room temperature and 25 cP when the temperature reaches $100^{\circ}C$. Briefly, it is remarkable that the fluid flow can be controlled by the temperature and this characteristic can be adopted to the microfluidics as a microvalve. The fabrication of a liquid type microvalve is more easy than solid state microvalves and which can increase an efficiency of the controlability with respect to the thermo-pneumatic micropump which is studied broadly for many years. When the magnetic fluid used as a sealant for high level sealing, the pressure leakage is less than solid state microvalve. The experimental results show that the pressure drop in microchannel, filled with the magnetic fluid, is significant in the temperature range of $20^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ and this result explains why the use of magnetic fluids is possible as a microvalve searcher uses this characteristics. Breakup Process and Wave Development Characteristics of Gel Propellant Simulants at Various Gelling Agent Contents (젤 모사 추진제의 점도 변화에 따른 분무 분열 및 파장 변화 특성)

  • Gelled propellants are non-Newtonian fluids in which the viscosity is a function of the shear rate, and they have a high dynamic shear viscosity which depends on the amount of gelling agent contents. The present study has focused on the breakup process, wave development of ligament and liquid sheets formed by impinging jets with various gelling agent contents. The breakup process of like-on-like doublet impinging jets are experimentally characterized using non-Newtonian liquids. The spray shape with elliptical pattern is distributed in a perpendicular direction to the momentum vectors of the jets. Gelled propellant simulants with high viscosity jets are more stable and produce less pronounced surface waves than low viscosity jets. Gelled propellant simulants from like-on-like doublet impinging jets have the spray shape of closed rim patterns at low pressure. As the injection pressure increased, rimless patterns which were composed of ligament sheets and small droplets emerged due to the effect of the aerodynamic action.

Viscosity and Diffusion Constants Calculation of n-Alkanes by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

  • In this paper we have presented the results for viscosity and self-diffusion constants of model systems for four liquid n-alkanes ($C_{12}, C_{20}, C_{32}, and C_{44}$) in a canonical ensemble at several temperatures using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The small chains of these n-alkanes are clearly $<{R_{ee}}^2>/6<{R_g}^2>>1$, which leads to the conclusion that the liquid n-alkanes over the whole temperatures considered are far away from the Rouse regime. Calculated viscosity ${\eta}$ and self-diffusion constants D are comparable with experimental results and the temperature dependence of both ${\eta}$ and D is suitably described by the Arrhenius plot. The behavior of both activation energies, $E_{\eta}$ and $E_D$, with increasing chain length indicates that the activation energies approach asymptotic values as n increases to the higher value, which is experimentally observed. Two calculated monomeric friction constants ${\zeta}$ and ${\zeta}_D$ give a correct qualitative trend: decrease with increasing temperature and increase with increasing chain length n. Comparison of the time auto-correlation functions of the end-to-end vector calculated from the Rouse model for n-dodecane ($C_{12}$) at 273 K and for n-tetratetracontane ($C_{44}$) at 473 K with those extracted directly from our MD simulations confirms that the short chain n-alkanes considered in this study are far away from the Rouse regime.
