To control spacecraft including satellite, we should understand precisely the performance of propulsion system and the program logic with appropriate format for satellite operations. In this study, the thruster performance functions was generated by using the best curve fitting for performance data from bi-propellant thrusters. Detailed thruster performance data are, in general, company proprietary information, therefore real firing tests were performed to understand the basic characteristics of the performance curve. Experimental rocket motor utilize liquid oxygen and kerosine as propellant and designed average thrust was 100 pound.
A linear acoustic analysis for baffled rocket combustion chambers has been developed. This study provides the comprehensive theoretical background for the baffle as one of the stabilizing devices in a liquid rocket propulsion system. Several specific effects of baffles are presented as mechanisms by which baffles eliminate instability. Included are longitudinalization of transverse waves inside baffle compartments, severe restriction of velocity fluctuations near the injector face, and decreased normal mode frequency of the chamber.

The floating ring seal which is used in the high pressure turbo pump is frequently used in the oxidizer pump and the fuel pump of the turbo pump of the liquid propulsion rocket, because it is able to minimize clearance to decrease the leakage flow rate. Compared with contact seal, the floating ring seal has advantage of minimizing clearance without rubbing phenomenon. But, the floating ring seal has a tendency to increase instability in operating condition in the high speed region. In this research, we devised floating ring seal which is inserted bump in the outer surface in order to improve the stability in the high speed region. Through this work, we expect to improve stability of floating ring seal with increasing the direct damping coefficient of seal and decreasing the eccentricity ratio.

Adopting an engine igniter with high efficiency and ignition performance is essential for reliable operation of liquid rocket engines. In this study, we developed a spark torch igniter for a 450 N-scale methane-oxygen liquid rocket engine by conducting numerical analyses, igniter manufacturing and validation. Specifically, we conducted a parametric study for maximizing the enthalpy at the igniter exit, specifically by adjusting the mass flow rate, nozzle area ratio, fuel-oxidizer mixture ratio, and the igniter length-to-diameter. The heat transferred via the igniter nozzle exit was computed using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. We also manufactured and tested the igniter based on a deduced design to confirm ignition performance of the designed spark torch igniter. The igniter developed through this study could contribute to the development of practical propulsion systems such as upper-stage engines of small launch vehicles.

As a fuel for ship propulsion, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is currently considered a proven and reasonable solution for meeting the IMO emission regulations, with gas engines for the LNG-fueled ship covering a broad range of power outputs. For an LNG-fueled ship, the LNG bunkering process is different from the HFO bunkering process, in the sense that the cryogenic liquid transfer generates a considerable amount of boil-off gas (BOG). This study investigated the effect of the temperature difference on boil-off gas (BOG) production during ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering to the receiving tank of the LNG-fueled ship. A concept design was resumed for the cargo/fuel tanks in the LNG bunkering vessel and the receiving vessel, as well as for LNG handling systems. Subsequently, the storage tank capacities of the LNG were $4,500m^3$ for the bunkering vessel and $700m^3$ for the receiving vessel. Process dynamic simulations by Aspen HYSYS were performed under several bunkering scenarios, which demonstrated that the boil-off gas and resulting pressure buildup in the receiving vessel were mainly determined by the temperature difference between bunkering and the receiving tank, pressure of the receiving tank, and amount of remaining LNG.
The solid rocket motor(SRM) consists of a motor case, igniter, propellants, nozzle, insulation, controller, and driving device. The liquid rocket propulsion systems(LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. The nozzle of SRM is high temperature condition and high velocity condition so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. This erosion occurs the change of nozzle throat and reduces thrust performance of rocket. The material of Rocket nozzle is minimization of erosion and insulation effect and endure the shear force, high temperature and high pressure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the erosion characteristics of solid rocket nozzles by each combustion time. Through the structure inspection of Graphite and C-C composite, identify the characteristics of the microstructure before and after erosion.

A supersonic rocket plum flowfield of kerosene/liquid-oxygen based propulsion system has been analysed using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a 9-species 14-reaction finite-chemistry model. The result were compared with chemically frozen flow solution to investigate the effect of finite-rate chemistry on the plume flowfield. The computations were performed using a commercial CFD software, FLUENT 5. The finite-rate chemistry solution exhibited higher temperature caused by the reactions within the nozzle. All the chemical reactions within the plum were dominated only in the shear layer and behind the barrel shock reflection region where the temperatures are high and the effect of finite-rate chemical reactions on the flowfield was found to be insignificant. However, the present plume computation including the finite-rate chemical reaction within the plume has revealed major reactions occurring in the plum and their reaction mechanisms.
The UV radiometer payload was launched successfully from the west coastal area of Korea Peninsula aboard KSR-III on 28, Nov 2002. KSR-III was the Korean third generation sounding rocket and was developed as intermediate step to larger space launch vehicle with liquid propulsion engine system. UV radiometer onboard KSR-III consists of UV and visible band optical phototubes to measure the direct solar attenuation during rocket ascending phase. For UV detection, 4 channel of sensors were installed in electronics payload section and each channel has 255, 290, 310nm center wavelengths, respectively. 450nm channel was used as reference for correction of the rocket attitude during the flight. Transmission characteristics of all channels were calibrated precisely prior to the flight test at the Optical Lab. in KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). During a total of 231s flight time, the onboard data telemetered to the ground station in real time. The ozone column density was calculated by this telemetry raw data. From the calculated column density, the vertical ozone profile over Korea Peninsula was obtained with sensor calibration data. Our results had reasonable agreements compared with various observations such as ground Umkhr measurement at Yonsei site, ozonesonde at Pohang site, and satellite measurements of HALOE and POAM. The sensitivity analysis of retrieval algorithm for parameters was performed and it was provided that significant error sources of the retrieval algorithm.

In a solid propulsion system, the rocket nozzle is exposed to high temperature combustion gas. Hence, choosing an appropriate material that could demonstrate adequate performance at high temperature is important. As advanced materials, carbon/silicon carbide composites (C/SiC) have been studied with the aim of using them for the rocket nozzle throat. However, when compared with typical structural materials, C/SiC composites are relatively weak in terms of both strength and toughness, owing to their quasi-brittle behavior and oxidation at high temperatures. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the thermal and mechanical properties of this material before using it in this application. This study presents an experimental method to investigate the fracture behavior of C/SiC composite material manufactured using liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) method at elevated temperatures. In particular, the effects of major parameters, such as temperature, loading, oxidation conditions, and fiber direction on strength and fracture characteristics were investigated. Fractography analysis of the fractured specimens was performed using an SEM.

Hybrid rockets have lately attracted attention as a strong candidate of small, low cost, safe and reliable launch vehicles. A significant topic is that the first commercially sponsored space ship, SpaceShipOne vehicle chose a hybrid rocket. The main factors for the choice were safety of operation, system cost, quick turnaround, and thrust termination. In Japan, five universities including Hokkaido University and three private companies organized "Hybrid Rocket Research Group" from 1998 to 2002. Their main purpose was to downsize the cost and scale of rocket experiments. In 2002, UNISEC (University Space Engineering Consortium) and HASTIC (Hokkaido Aerospace Science and Technology Incubation Center) took over the educational and R&D rocket activities respectively and the research group dissolved. In 2008, JAXA/ISAS and eleven universities formed "Hybrid Rocket Research Working Group" as a subcommittee of the Steering Committee for Space Engineering in ISAS. Their goal is to demonstrate technical feasibility of lowcost and high frequency launches of nano/micro satellites into sun-synchronous orbits. Hybrid rockets use a combination of solid and liquid propellants. Usually the fuel is in a solid phase. A serious problem of hybrid rockets is the low regression rate of the solid fuel. In single port hybrids the low regression rate below 1 mm/s causes large L/D exceeding a hundred and small fuel loading ratio falling below 0.3. Multi-port hybrids are a typical solution to solve this problem. However, this solution is not the mainstream in Japan. Another approach is to use high regression rate fuels. For example, a fuel regression rate of 4 mm/s decreases L/D to around 10 and increases the loading ratio to around 0.75. Liquefying fuels such as paraffins are strong candidates for high regression fuels and subject of active research in Japan too. Nakagawa et al. in Tokai University employed EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) to modify viscosity of paraffin based fuels and investigated the effect of viscosity on regression rates. Wada et al. in Akita University employed LTP (Low melting ThermoPlastic) as another candidate of liquefying fuels and demonstrated high regression rates comparable to paraffin fuels. Hori et al. in JAXA/ISAS employed glycidylazide-poly(ethylene glycol) (GAP-PEG) copolymers as high regression rate fuels and modified the combustion characteristics by changing the PEG mixing ratio. Regression rate improvement by changing internal ballistics is another stream of research. The author proposed a new fuel configuration named "CAMUI" in 1998. CAMUI comes from an abbreviation of "cascaded multistage impinging-jet" meaning the distinctive flow field. A CAMUI type fuel grain consists of several cylindrical fuel blocks with two ports in axial direction. The port alignment shifts 90 degrees with each other to make jets out of ports impinge on the upstream end face of the downstream fuel block, resulting in intense heat transfer to the fuel. Yuasa et al. in Tokyo Metropolitan University employed swirling injection method and improved regression rates more than three times higher. However, regression rate distribution along the axis is not uniform due to the decay of the swirl strength. Aso et al. in Kyushu University employed multi-swirl injection to solve this problem. Combinations of swirling injection and paraffin based fuel have been tried and some results show very high regression rates exceeding ten times of conventional one. High fuel regression rates by new fuel, new internal ballistics, or combination of them require faster fuel-oxidizer mixing to maintain combustion efficiency. Nakagawa et al. succeeded to improve combustion efficiency of a paraffin-based fuel from 77% to 96% by a baffle plate. Another effective approach some researchers are trying is to use an aft-chamber to increase residence time. Better understanding of the new flow fields is necessary to reveal basic mechanisms of regression enhancement. Yuasa et al. visualized the combustion field in a swirling injection type motor. Nakagawa et al. observed boundary layer combustion of wax-based fuels. To understand detailed flow structures in swirling flow type hybrids, Sawada et al. (Tohoku Univ.), Teramoto et al. (Univ. of Tokyo), Shimada et al. (ISAS), and Tsuboi et al. (Kyushu Inst. Tech.) are trying to simulate the flow field numerically. Main challenges are turbulent reaction, stiffness due to low Mach number flow, fuel regression model, and other non-steady phenomena. Oshima et al. in Hokkaido University simulated CAMUI type flow fields and discussed correspondence relation between regression distribution of a burning surface and the vortex structure over the surface.
