  • Machinability improvement by the use of liquid nitrogen in cryogenic machining has been reported in various studies. This has been mostly attributed to the cooling effect of liquid nitrogen. However, No study has been found in discussion on whether liquid nitrogen possesses lubrication effect in cryogenic cutting. In machining tests, cryogenic machining reduced the force component in the feed direction, indicating that the chip slides on the tool rake face with lower friction. This study also found that the effectiveness of LN2 lubrication depends on the approach how LN2 is applied regarding cutting forces related.

  • This paper presents some indirect physical evidences indicating that reduced friction occurs in an economical cryogenic machining process, in which LN2 is applied selectively in well-controlled jets to the localized cutting zone. These evidences include cutting force components, tool wear rate and chip morphology. LN2 reduced the tool wear rate to a great extent and elongated the tool life up to four times compared to emulsion cooling. The friction reduction was further reflected in larger shear angle and less secondary deformation in the chip microstructures. This study also found that the effectiveness of LN2 lubrication depends on the approach how LN2 is applied.

  • In the design of superconducting power equipments such as transformer, cable and fault current limit, knowledge of the dielectric behavior of both liquid and gaseous at very low temperatures is very importance. Especially, Electrical properties of liquid nitrogen($LN_{2}$) and gaseous nitrogen($GN_{2}$) have become of great interest again since the discovery of high temperature superconductors. However, many sources of $LN_{2}$and $GN_{2}$ problems in the test of pancake coil model arising form the deficiency of insulation data. Therefore, this paper describes the results of an experimental study on the ac breakdown voltage($V_{B}$) properties of $LN_2$ and Air under the electrode of simulated HTS pancake coil. The ac breakdown voltage of $GN_{2}$ have been measured by pancake coil-pancake coil gaps over the temperature range of 293 K to 77 K.

  • Titanium alloy has been widely used in the aerospace industry because of its high strength and good corrosion resistance. During cutting, the low thermal conductivity and high chemical reactivity of titanium generate a high cutting temperature and accelerates tool wear. To improve cutting tool life, cryogenic machining by using a liquid nitrogen (LN2) jet is suggested. In cryogenic jet cooling, evaporation of LN2 in the tank and transfer tube could cause pressure fluctuation and change the cooling rate. In this work, cooling uniformity is investigated in terms of liquid nitrogen jet pressure in cryogenic jet cooling during titanium alloy turning. Fluctuation of jet spraying pressure causes tool temperature to fluctuate. It is possible to suppress the fluctuation of the jet pressure and improve cooling by using a phase separator. Measuring tool temperature shows that consistent LN2 jet pressure improves cryogenic cooling uniformity.

  • In this paper, a relationship between AC discharge progress and the radiated electromagnetic waves was investigated by measuring electromagnetic waves using a biconical antenna and a spectrum analyzer. The frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves were measured at the atmospheric pressure in liquid nitrogen($LN_2$) during partial discharges progressed by AC high voltage in nonuniform electric field. Front the results of this study, a new method was introduced for measurement and analysis of the radiated electromagnetic waves with discharge progress in $LN_2$ Besides. according to the consideration of the mutual relation between frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves and discharge progress, it was confirmed that detecting partial discharge and estimating discharge progress could be possible. It is considered that these results obtained from this investigation may be used as fundamental data for diagnosis and prediction of electric insulations about superconducting and cryogenic power equipments.

  • Electrical breakdown characteristics of liquid nitrogen($LN_2$) used as both coolant and insulator for high $T_c$ superconductor system are very important. This paper presents dynamic breakdown characteristics fo $LN_2$ by quench phenomena of thermal bubble under high electric field. Experimental results revealed dynamic breakdown voltage fell down drastically compared with the static breakdown voltage without the quench. Because of increasing heat power, bubble size becomes big and breakdown voltage decreases. The breakdown voltage mechanism of $LN_2$ depends on thermal bubble effect. In the Electrode arrangement, electrical breakdown voltage of horizontal arrangement appears lower than that of vertical arrangement. Also, we observed the behavior of thermal bubbles in $LN_2$ which were generated after quench using camera.

  • For the experiment the four types of spacer were distinguished by arrangement. The flashover characteristic on each types of spacer was investigated and the flashover phenomena were observed to understand breakdown mechanism in liquid nitrogen($LN_{2}$). The spacer should be placed interior coil as an insulator, a cooling channel and s supporter of structures. The simulated electrode used in the experiment was made from five turns of HTS tape. Experimental results revealed that multi-layer and barrier effects did work well in Air but did not in $LN_{2}$. These result suggested that the flashover in LN2 caused by the bubbles due to partial discharge at micro gap, g. The flashover characteristics decreased to 70% when g is 0.2 mm. The degradation was improved by even treatment on surface of coil electrode.

  • In this study, the cooling characteristics of combustion gas were investigated by injecting liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) into a liquid rocket combustion chamber, which uses liquid oxygen (Lox) and kerosene as propellants. $LN_2$ injectors and an extended chamber for mixing were installed at the end of the ordinary LRE combustion chamber, and a nozzle was installed after the chamber for mixing. First, an ignition test of the liquid rocket engine was conducted to verify the stable combustion process. Next, a hot firing test was performed step-by-step for safety. Finally, the test was performed for 20 s. The results showed that the combustion gas of the LRE could be successfully cooled by using $LN_2$.

  • The study on the dielectric characteristics of gaseous insulation medium is important for designing current leads of superconducting machines using a sub-cooled liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) cooling method. In a sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system, the temperature of gaseous insulation medium surrounding current leads varies from the temperature of coolant to 300 K according to the displacement between the electrode system and the surface of sub-cooled $LN_2$. In this paper, AC withstand voltage experiments on gaseous nitrogen according to temperature are conducted. Also, AC withstand voltage experiments on gaseous nitrogen according to pressure, size of electrode, and gap length between two electrodes are performed. It is found that there is a functional relation between the electrical breakdown voltage and the field utilization factor (${\xi}$). As a result, the empirical formula for estimating an electrical breakdown voltage is deduced by adopting the concept of field utilization factors. It is expected that the experimental results presented in this paper are helpful to design current leads for a high voltage superconducting apparatus such as a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using a sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system.

  • The liquid nitrogen as an environmentally safe coolant has been widely recognized in cryogenic machining, its function as a lubricant is plausible due to its chemical inertness, physical volatility and low viscosity. Since a reduced friction is a direct witness of the lubrication effect from a tribological viewpoint, this paper presents an evaluation of the apparent friction coefficient on the tool-chip interface in cryogenic cutting operations to prove and characterize the lubricity of LN2 in cryogenic machining. The cryogenic cutting technology used in this study is based on a cooling approach and liquid nitrogen delivery system which are intended to apply liquid nitrogen in well-controlled fine jets to selectively localized cutting zones and to penetrate liquid nitrogen to the tool-chip interface. It has been found that the apparent friction coefficient can be significantly reduced in cryogenic machining, depending on the approach of liquid nitrogen delivery.
