  • For the improvement of aerodynamic performance of the turbine blade in a turbopump for the liquid rocket engine, the optimization of turbine profile shape has been studied. The turbine in a turbopump in this study is a partial admission of impulse type, which has twelve nozzles and supersonic inflow. Due to the separated nozzles and supersonic expansion, the flow field becomes complicate and shows oblique shocks and flow separation. To increase the blade power, redesign ol the blade shape using CFD and optimization methods was attempted. The turbine cascade shape was represented by four design parameters. For optimization, a genetic algorithm based upon non-gradient search hue been selected as an optimizer. As a result, the final blade has about 4 percent more blade power than the initial shape.

  • The refrigerant after the expansion valve interchanges the heat at the evaporator. At this moment, the state of gas and liquid becomes two-phase flow and causes irregular noise. In order to avoid the noise, the two-phase flow pattern should be predicted. In this paper, the procedure to predict the two-phase flow patterns such as churn flow and annular flow was suggested using the CFD software. The experiments using refrigerant-supplying equipment was carried out and the noise levels according to the flow pattern were measured. The flow patterns predicted by this procedure showed good agreement with those by experiments. The churn flow is noisier than annular flow pattern.

  • The effect of surface free energy on the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of carbon black/thermoplastic resin composites was investigated. The thermoplastic resins such as EVA, LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE were used with the addition of 30 wt.% of the carbon black. The surface free energy of the composites was studied in the context of two-liquid contact angle measurements, i.e., deionized water and diiodomethane. It was observed that the resistivity on PTC composites Was greatly increased near the crystalline melting temperature, due to the thermal expansion of polymeric matrix. From the experimental results, it was proposed that the decrease of surface free energy induced by interactions between carbon black surfaces and polymer chains is an important factor to the fabrication of a PTC composite made of carbon black and polymeric matrix.

  • This paper discusses the development of drying shrinkage reducing type superplasticizer(DSRS) by varying dosage of polycarboxylic based superplasticizer, liquid type expansive admixture and antifoaming agent. Adequate mixture proportion of each admixture is fixed at 0.3$\%$ of superplasticizer, 0.15$\%$ of liquidtype expansive admixture and 0.0005$\%$ of antifoaming agent to insure the improvement in drying shrinkage as well as comparable to the slump and air content of conventional concrete. With this mixture proportion, compressive strength of concrete using DSRS is comparable to that of conventional concrete. The use of DSRS studied by the authors has a favorable effect on reducing drying shrinkage due to the effect of water content and expansion by expansive admixture.

  • Emphasis has been placed on thin plate fabrication of plain woven carbon fabric reinforced Al matrix composites using liquid pressing process. The composite has potential applications for PDP rear plate. The process is to use the low pressure for infiltration of Al melt into plain woven carbon fabric as the Al melt is pressurized directly. The minimum pressure required for the infiltration was calculated from force balance equation, permeability measurements and compaction behavior of carbon fiber. Also, the melting temperature and the holding time have been optimized. In order to measure coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the composites, the thermal strain measurement using strain gage was performed and the thermal conductivity of the composites was measured using laser flash method. The constituent materials of the composite are PAN type carbon fibers as reinforcements and 6061 Al alloys as matrices.

  • Aluminum alloy has not only physical characteristic of very high activated high thermal conductivity and high thermal coefficient expansion but also special characteristic of great difference fusibility of hydrogen between liquid and solid phase. Because of these reasons, Aluminum welding is very different. Therefore, only MIG welding method should be applied instead of other welding methods. In this study, in order to select optimal welding conditions, it has been to investigate the effectiveness on the welding current, welding speed, flow rate of gas and welding voltage to occurrence of spatters, external shape of bead, state of penetration and width and hight of bead by using filer metal of A15356(dia. 1.21mm) on the base material of A16061.

  • A computational analysis has been made on fluid flow in a regenerative cooling Passage for a reduced size liquid rocket engine to predict pressure drop and heat transfer rate in it. The contraction/expansion of the cross sectional area of the passage turn out to increases both the pressure loss and the heat transfer rate of the duct. The changes of the cross sectional area near the nozzle throat are effective to protect the throat which suffers from severe thermal load. Also given is the qualitative characteristics of the performance of the regenerative cooling system due to the variation of coolant flow rate.

  • Microstructural development at the ZrO2/NiTi bonding interface and reaction products were examined and identified with SEM and AEM. Ti-oxide, Ti2Ni and Ni2Ti layer were observed whose thickness depends on bonding temperature typically. The development of Ti-oxide layer is related with oxygen ion in ZrO2 and liquid phase Ti2Ni. It is considered that compositional deviation from homogeneity and residual stress caused by thermal expansion mismatch are closely related with the formation of the Ti2Ni phase.

  • In nucleate boiling, bubbles are created by the expansion of entrapped gas or vapor at small cavities in the surface of heat transfer. Namely, surface roughness is the important factor of heat transfer. This paper deals with the characteristics of boiling curve according to surface roughness. Freon-113 is used as the experimental fluid. The results are as follows; 1. In the case of the same as "q=C$\Delta$T$^{n}$ ", the lower numberical index "n", the larger heat transfer coefficient and the lower wall superheat "$\Delta$T" is obtained for the rougher surface. 2. In the working of every kind of heat transfer sruface with boiling, improvement of capabilities of heat transfer can be devised by adding suitable roughness on the heat transfer surface. 3. When the metal nets of moderate mesh number are established, the capabilities of heat transfer can be improved in evaporation of liquid in vessels. But in the case that the sucession of bubbles in checked by using the nets which are too tight, the generation of bubbles union decreases critical heat flux. decreases critical heat flux.

  • A study of uncertainty analysis was conducted on four key thermophysical properties of molten Platinum using a noncontacting levitation technique. More specifically, this work demonstrates a detailed reporting of the uncertainties associated with the density, volumetric thermal expansion coefficient, surface tension and viscosity measurements at higher temperatures for a widely used refractory metal, Platinum using electrostatic levitation (ESL). The microgravity experiments were conducted using JAXA's Electrostatic Levitation Furnace (ELF) facility on the International Space Station and the terrestrial experiments were conducted using NASA's Marshal Space Flight Center's ESL facility. The performance of these two facilities were then quantified based on the measurement precision and accuracy using the metrological International Standards Organization's Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty Measurement (GUM) principles.
