  • In conventional liquid crystal display(LCD) manufacturing process, Indium Tin Oxide(ITO) as transparent electrode and rubbing process of polyimide as alignment layer are essential process to apply electric field and align liquid crystal molecules. However, there are some limits that deposition of ITO requires high vacuum state, and rubbing process might damage the device with tribolectric discharge. In this paper, we made nanocomposite with PEDOT:PSS and MWNT to replace ITO and constructed alignment layer by nano imprint lithography with nano wrinkle pattern, to replace rubbing process. These replacement made that only one PEDOT:PSS/MWNT film can function as two layers of ITO and polyimide alignment layer, which means simplification of process. Transferred nano wrinkle patterns functioned well as alignment layer, and we found out lowered threshold voltage and shortened response time as MWNT content increase, which is related to increment of electric conductivity of the film. Through this study, it may able to contribute to process simplification, reducing process cost, and suggesting a solution to disadvantage of rubbing process.

  • We fabricated BiAlO thin film by a solution process with a brush coating to be used as liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. Solution-processed BiAlO was coated on the glass substrate by brush process. Prepared thin films were annealed at different temperatures of 80℃, 180℃, and 280℃. To verify whether the BiAlO film was formed properly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis was performed on Bi and Al. Using a crystal rotation method by polarized optical microscopy, LC alignment state was evaluated. At the annealing temperature of 280℃, the uniform homogenous LC alignment was achieved. To reveal the mechanism of LC alignment by brush coating, field emission scanning electron microscope was used. Through this analysis, spin-coated and brush coated film surface were compared. It was revealed that physical anisotropy was induced by brush coating at a high annealing temperature. Particles were aligned in one direction along which brush coating was made, resulting in a physical anisotropy that affects a uniform LC alignment. Therefore, it was confirmed that brush coating combined with BiAlO thin film annealed at high temperature has a significant potential for LC alignment.

  • Effects of alignment layers on pretilt nagle generation and electrical characteristics in nematic liquid crystal(NLC) by using photo-alignment techniques on polyimide PI) surface with side chain were studied. The generated pretilt angle of the NLC on rubbed PI surface with 1-layer is almost the same as that with the 2-layers. However, the generated pretilt angle of the NLC on photo-induced PI surface with 2-layers is larger than that with the 1-layer. The different mechanism of pretilt generation in NLC was observed on the rubbing and photo-alignment method. Therefore, the pretilt angle of the NLC on photo-induced PI surface is attributed to surface roughness due to photo-dissociation on the polymer with UV light irradiation on PI surface. We observed the same characteristics of voltage-transmittance (V-T) and response time for 1- and 2-layers on PI surface. Consequently, we sugest that the VHR of photo-aligned TN-LCD is higher than that of the rubbing-aligned TN-LCD.

  • We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. It was found that monodomain alignment of LNC is obtained with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The generated NLC pretilt angles are about $3^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates, However, the pretilt angle measured at about $1.7^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than by thin plastic substrate. It is considered that this alignment may be attributed to roughness of micro groove substrate. The tilt angle increases with increasing baking temperature for making polyimide layer using glass substrate. It was concluded that pretilt angle in the polyimide surface is attributable to the increasing of imide rato.

  • This paper investigates the effect of the electrode edge of a patterned vertical alignment (PVA) liquid crystal (LC) device on the viewing angle characteristics. In general, a transmissive LCD applies an LC layer with half-wave retardation for a bright state and with zero retardation for a dark state. The retardation of the LC layer would be distorted in each point, however, when a voltage is applied because of the non-uniform voltage distribution in the electrode edge effect. In this paper, the feasibility of the full effect of the electrode edge on the viewing angle property is considered, and the optical viewing angles of the VA LCD with a uniform half-wave LC layer and the PVA LCD with a practical non-uniform LC layer are compared.

  • Viewing angle characteristics of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using a in-plane driven (IPD) vertical alignment (VA) cell without a negative compensation film on a homeotropic alignment layer were studied. Good voltage-transmittance (V - T) curves were obtained using the rubbing aligned IPD- VA cell. However, instability and low transmittances of V - T characteristics in photo aligned IPD- VA cell was measured. The EO performance of a rubbingaligned IPD- VA cell without a negative compensation film was wider than that of photoaligned IPD- VA cell and conventional VA cell. Also, the fabrication processes using the rubbing aligned IPD- VA cell mode be carried out with only one-sided rubbing.

  • We have developed vertical alignment liquid crystal display (VA-LCD), of which the viewing angle can be controlled. The VA-LCD has the function of switching between the wide viewing mode and narrow viewing angle mode using one homogeneous aligned (HA) LC layer and one compensation film with a negative C-plate. The retardation of the HA layer at off axis can be controlled by applying an electric field while keeping the retardation value to be zero at normal direction. Consequently, the device exhibits a viewing mode over $170^{\circ}$ in terms of CR = 10 in wide viewing mode and about $60^{\circ}$ in terms of CR = 2 in narrow viewing angle mode m horizontal direction.

  • We studied nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effect on the $SiO_x$ thin film deposited $45^{\circ}$ oblique by rf magnetic sputtering system. Pretilt angle and thermal stability characteristic as well as NLC alignment effect were investigated. A uniform liquid crystal alignment effect on the $SiO_x$ thin film was achieved and pretilt angle was about $90^{\circ}$. The thermal stability of the $SiO_x$ thin film was sustained by $200^{\circ}$.

  • We have studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effects on a nitrogen-doped diamond-like carbon (NDLC) thin film layer with ion beam irradiation. The pretilt angle for NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam exposure was observed below 1 degree. Also, we had the good LC alignment characteristics on the NDLC thin films with ion beam exposure of 1800 eV. In thermal stability experiments, the alignment defect of the NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam irradiation above annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ can be observed. Therefore, the good thermal stability and LC alignment for NLC by ion beam aligned NDLC thin films can be achieved.
