  • Engine cool down process is necessary for the liquid rocket engines using cryogenic propellants in order to meet the requirement of engine inlet temperature. This paper evaluates the cool down characteristics of oxidizer supply pipeline and engine in prechill process prior to the engine firing tests, and calculate the quantity of liquid oxygen consumption.

  • The modeling of thermodynamic non-idealities and transport anomalies is a crucial prerequisite to realistically simulate the mixing and combustion processes of liquid propellants injected above critical pressures. This study has developed a specific set of subroutines to calculate the thermodynamic and transport properties based on the generalized cubic equation of state (EoS) in a coupled manner with the standard chemical kinetics packages (Chemkin). The existing flamelet analysis code is extended with the real-fluid package and applied to numerical investigation of local flame structures of kerosene and liquid oxygen at high pressure conditions relevant to the actual rocket engines.

  • In this paper, a calculation method of the thermodynamic parameters of cryogenic propellant is proposed when a cryogenic propellant tank is pressurized by gaseous helium(GHe) bubbling. Temperature of cryogenic propellant and mass of dissolved GHe into propellant were analyzed at the various operation of pressurization of tile liquid oxygen(LOX) and hydrogen($LH_2$) tank using helium bubbling. It was evaluated how the GHe bubbling influences to the thermodynamic parameters of LOX and $LH_2$ with results of the analysis. With the proposed calculation method, It will be able to confirm the feasibility of GHe bubbling as a pressurization system of cryogenic propellant tank and to optimize the pressurization system using GHe bubbling.

  • For pump-fed rocket propulsion system, the temperature of LOX to be supplied to turbopump inlet should be satisfied with pump inlet temperature requirement during all operating stages, as excessive temperatures can result in cavitation due to reduction in NPSH, thus either damaging the pump or adversely affecting pump performance rise. So exact estimation of LOX temperature rise is absolutely needed for developing reliable propulsion system. This paper presents systematic analysis scheme for estimating inner process of cryogenic propellant tank which is needed for LOX temperature rise. And this paper presents LOX temperature rise and thermal stratification for all rocket operating stages including cooling, filling, waiting, pre-pressurization and firing, with the application of buoyancy driven boundary layer theory.

  • A preburner is one of the key components for a staged combustion cycle engine fueled by kerosene and Lox. Since it has oxygen rich combustion inside, temperature control is very crucial. The temperature of the exhaust gas should be low enough not to burn turbine blade and yet high to keep the efficiency high. In addition temporal and spatial deviations also managed strictly. Conventionally, the required average and maximum temperature are determined by engine system and the preburner should be developed to meet the criteria. Currently being developed preburner has 50K spatial temperature deviation requirement. It was estimated by numerical simulations and proven by tests. The numerical analysis were done with both supercritical condition and normal conditions. The tests results showed that the temperature deviations were less than expected, and the results from the test and simulations were well agreed when the supercritical conditions were considered. Above all, since the gas temperature created by the preburner is very stable with minimum deviation, the preburner developed can be used to drive a turbine and for gas-liquid combustion chambers.

  • The process of charging an oxidizer in the liquid propellant rocket can divide into the cooling of the oxidizer tank, the high flow charge, the small flow charge, and the replenishment charge for the correction of temperature. The oxidizer of the Naro(KSLV-I) first stage uses the liquid oxygen. And the flow rate and the temperature specification corresponding to each charge mode are presented for the requirement. The flow throttling valve and heat exchanger are installed in the oxidizer filling system in order to satisfy this kind of the flow rate and temperature requirement specification. In this research, by using the Flowmaster which is a commercial one-dimension thermo-fluidic analysis program, one dimensional flow system analyses was performed to predict the exact flow rate at each specific mode. Also, the flow rate correction sensitivity of the flow control valves was analytically determined to satisfy the flow condition refinement at each mode within the limited certification test.

  • Liquid silicon infiltration, which is one of the methods of producing fiber reinforced ceramic composites, has several advantages such as low fabrication cost and good shape formability. In order to confirm LSI process feasibility of SiC fiber, $SiC_f/SiC$ composites were fabricated using three types of SiC fibers (Tyranno SA, LoxM, Tyranno S) which have different crystallinity and oxygen content. Composites that were fabricated with LSI process were well densified by less than 2% of porosity, but showed an obvious difference in 3-point bending strength according to crystallinity and oxygen content. When composites in LSI process was exposed to a high temperature, crystallization and micro structural changes were occurred in amorphous SiOC phase in SiC fiber. Fiber shrinkage also observed during LSI process that caused from reaction in fiber and between fiber and matrix. These were confirmed with changes of process temperature by SEM, XRD and TEM analysis.

  • In the design of KSLV-II, there is a scenario in which supercooled liquid oxygen is supplied to prevent a geysering phenomenon in the oxidizer pipe and a cavitation phenomenon at the pump inlet. To verify this condition in the engine development test phase, a system that supplies supercooled liquid oxygen to the engine was applied in the engine combustion test facility. In this system, supercooling methods using a vacuum ejector and using helium injection to the tank were appied. Both tests were carried out for about 17 minutes. Supercooling results of about 3.3K for the ejector test and about 2.2K for the helium injection test were obtained at the 50% level of the tank.

  • Experiments on film cooling were performed with a small scale rocket engine homing liquid oxygen (LOx) and Jet A-1(jet engine fuel). Film coolants(Jet A-1 and water) were injected through the film cooling injector. Film cooled length and the outside wall temperature of the combustor were determined for chamber pressure, and the different geometries(injection angle) with the flow rates of film coolant. The loss of characteristic velocity due to film cooling was determined for the case of film cooling with water and Jet A-1. As the coolant flow increases, the outside wall temperatures decrease but the decrease in the outside wall temperatures reduced over the 8 percent film coolant flow rate. The efficiency of characteristic velocity was decreased with the Increase of the film coolant flow rate.

  • Plows in the LOX manifold with two different types of predistributor have been analyzed using a CAE technique. The computational geometry and flow condition through the injection holes resemble those in the actual manifold of the liquid rocket, so that the results can describe the actual flow reasonably It is noted that two different types of predistributors lead to very similar pressure and mass distributions in the plane just above the injection holes. Also the pressure drop across the injection holes is rather uniform regardless of location of the holes and this would suggest that the simplified modeling of the flow through the injection holes is possible from an engineering point of view.
