Bio-liquid is a liquid by-product of the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) reaction, converting wet biomass into solid hydrochar, bio-liquid, and bio-gas. Since bio-liquid contains various compounds, it requires efficient sampling method to extract the target compounds from bio-liquid. In this research, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) in bio-liquid was extracted based on hollow fiber supported liquid phase microextraction (HF-LPME) and determined by Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). The well-known major components of biodiesel, including methyl myristate, palmitate, methyl palmitoleate, methyl stearate, methyl oleate, and methyl linoleate had been selected as standard materials for FAME analysis using HF-LPME. Physicochemical properties of bio-liquid was measured that the acidity was 3.30 (${\pm}0.01$) and the moisture content was 100.84 (${\pm}3.02$)%. The optimization of HF-LPME method had been investigated by varying the experimental parameters such as extraction solvent, extraction time, stirring speed, and the length of HF at the fixed concentration of NaCl salt. As a result, optimal conditions of HF-LPME for FAMEs were; n-octanol for extraction solvent, 30 min for extraction time, 1200 rpm for stirring speed, 20 mm for the HF length, and 0.5 w/v% for the concentration of NaCl. Validation of HF-LPME was performed with limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), dynamic range, reproducibility, and recovery. The results obtained from this study indicated that HF-LPME was suitable for the preconcentration method and the quantitative analysis to characterize FAMEs in bio-liquid generated from food waste via HTC reaction.

We have designed a digital variable-focal-length liquid lens by using 4-bit actuators. Each bit actuator consists of 1, 2, 4, and 8 unit actuators, squeezes discrete fluidic volume of $2^4$ different levels into the lens The 4-bit digital actuation mode ($b_4b_3b_2b_1$) affords $2_4$ different lens curvatures and focal lengths. The on/off control of the bit actuators helps in solving the main problem associated with analog liquid lenses, i.e., precise control of the pressure or volume of the fluid for changing the lens curvature and focal length. Experimentally, it has been found that the 4-bit actuators allow 0.074 nl (${\pm}0.02\;nl$) of the given fluid per bit to enter the lens and help in increasing the focal length from 3.63 mm to 38.6 mm in $2^4$ different levels; no high-cost controllers are required for precise control of the pressure or volume in this case. Therefore, the present digital liquid lens is more suitable to integrated optical systems by reducing additional component for pressure and volume control.

The spray and breakup characteristics of swirling liquid sheet were investigated by measuring the spray angle and breakup length as the axial Weber number Wel was increased up to 1554 and the ambient gas pressure up to 4.0MPa. As Wel and ambient gas density increased, the disturbances on the annular liquid sheet surface were amplified by the increase of the aerodynamic forces, and thus the liquid sheet disintegrated near from the injector exit. The measured spray angles according to the ambient gas density were different before and after the sheet breaks. Before the liquid sheet breaks, the spray angle was almost constant, but once the liquid sheet started to breakup, the spray angle decreased. And the breakup length decreased because of the increase of the aerodynamic force as the ambient gas density and Wel increased. Lastly, the measured breakup length according to the ambient gas density and Wel was compared with the result by the linear instability theory. We found that the corrected linear instability theory considering the attenuation of sheet thickness agrees well with our experimental results.
A ribbon-type polycrystalline silicon wafer was directly fabricated from liquid silicon via a novel technique for both a fast growth rate and large grain size by exploiting gas pressure. Effects of processing parameters such as moving speed of a dummy bar and the length of the solidification zone on continuous casting of the silicon wafer were investigated. Silicon melt extruded from the growth region in the case of a solidification zone with a length of 1cm due to incomplete solidification. In case of a solidification zone wieh a length of 2 cm, on the other hand, continuous casting of the wafer was impossible due to the volume expansion of silicon derived from the liquid-solid transformation in solidification zone. Consequently, the optimal length of the solidification zone was 1.5 cm for maintaining the position of the solid-liquid interface in the solidification zone. The silicon wafer could be continuously casted when the moving speed of the dummy bar was 6 cm/min, but liquid silicon extruded from the growth region without solidification when the moving speed of the dummy bar was ${\geq}$ 9 cm/min. This was due to a shift of the position of the solid-liquid interface from the solidification zone to the moving area. The present study reports experimental findings on a new direct growth system for obtaining silicon wafers with both high quality and productivity, as a candidate for an alternate route for the fabrication of ribbon-type silicon wafers.

The role of the injector as an acoustic resonator is studied for the high performance rocket engine adopting the gas-liquid scheme injector. Acoustic behavior in the combustor with single injector is investigated numerically adopting linear acoustic analysis for cold condition. Acoustic-damping effect of the injector is evaluated by damping factor as a function of the injector length. From the numerical results, it is found that the injector can play a significant role in acoustic damping and the optimum length of the injector corresponds to half of a full wavelength of the longitudinal mode with the acoustic frequency to be damped in the chamber. In baffled chamber, the optimum lengths of the injector are calculated as a function of baffle length for both cold and hot conditions.
In this paper, spray and combustion characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine were experimentally investigated. The spray penetrations were measured to clarify the spray characteristics of a liguid jet injected transversely into the subsonic vitiated airstream, which is maintained a high velocity and temperature. The spray penetrations are increased with decreasing airstream velocity, increasing airstream temperature, and increasing air-fuel momentum ratio. To compensate our results of penetrations, the new experimental equation were modified from Inamura's equation. In the case of insufficient penetration, the combustion phenomenon in ram-combustor were unstable. Therefore, the temperature distribution was slanted to the low wall of the ram-combustor. These trends gradually disappeared as the length and air temperature of the combustor became longer. Combustion efficiency increased when the length of the combustor was long and the air temperature was high. Especially, stable flame region is enlarged when the length of the combustor was long and the air temperature was high. Type Abstract here. Type Abstract here.
The breakup characteristics of liquid sheets formed by the impinging and swirl type injectors were studied as increasing the Weber number (or injection condition) and the ambient gas pressure to 4.0.MPa. In the case of impinging type injector. we compared the changes of breakup lengths between laminar and turbulent sheets. which are formed by the impingement of laminar and turbulent jets. respectively. The results showed that both sheets expand as increasing the injection velocity irrespective of the ambient gas density when the gas based Weber number is low. When the Weber number is high, however, the breakup of turbulent sheet depends on the hydraulic force of jets as well as the aerodynamic force of ambient gas which determines the breakup of laminar sheet. Using the experimental results. we could suggest empirical models on the breakup lengths of laminar and turbulent sheets. In the case of swirl type injector. as $We_l$, and ambient gas density increased, the disturbances on the annular liquid sheet surface were amplified by the increase of the aerodynamic forces. and thus the liquid sheet disintegrated near from the injector exit. Finally, the measured breakup length of swirl type injector according to the ambient gas density and $We_l$, was compared with the result by the linear instability theory. We found that the corrected breakup length relation derived from linear instability theory considering the attenuation of sheet thickness agrees well with our experimental results.

Effect of elliptical orifice on the spray characteristics of liquid jet ejecting into subsonic crossflows were experimentally studied. Circular/elliptical plain-orifice injectors, which had different ratios of the orifice length to diameter and major axis to minor axis, were used for transverse injection. Compared with the previous research, breakup lengths of elliptical nozzles are shorter than circular nozzles at all experimental condition. Cavitation/hydraulic flip are considered as a reduction in the breakup length at all circular/elliptical nozzle. In the case of liquid column trajectories, major axis which was placed to the crossflows, increases the frontal area of the liquid column exposed to the crossflows. Hence, the aerodynamic force exerted on the jet is increased and the penetration depth is reduced.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the breakup mechanism of a liquid jet in a coaxial air flow. By using the high speed camera, measured were the instantaneous change of the wave length, amuplitude of disturbance, propagation velocity of wave and breakup length, and the relationships between those data were examined. The shape of the surface of the liquid jet appeared to be rather complicated and irregular. The growth rate of disturbance was not constant, and was changed at the moment of 3ms prior to the disintegration of the liquid jet. Simultaneously at this moment, the propagation velocities of the sequential waves were reversed and the wave length was rapidly decreased.
The key process used in nuclear industries for the management of radiotoxicity associated with spent fuel in a closed fuel cycle is solvent extraction. An understanding of hydrodynamics and mass transfer is of primary importance for the design of mass transfer equipment used in solvent extraction processes. Understanding the interfacial phenomenon and the associated hydrodynamics of the liquid drops is essential for model-based design of mass transfer devices. In this work, the phenomenon of drop formation at the tip of a nozzle submerged in quiescent immiscible liquid phase is revisited. Previously reported force balance based models and empirical correlations are analyzed. Experiments are carried out to capture the process of drop formation using high-speed imaging technique. The images are digitally processed to measure the average drop diameter. A correlation based on the force balance model is proposed to estimate drop diameter and jet length. The average drop diameter obtained from the proposed model is in good agreement with experimental data with an average error of 6.3%. The developed model is applicable in both the necking as well as jetting regime and is validated for liquid-liquid systems having low, moderate and high interfacial tension.
