루우프형 2상 유동 열사이폰의 응축열전달 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Condensation Heat Transfer of Two-Phase Loop Thermosyphons)

  • This study concerns the performance of condensation heat transfer in two-phase loop thermosyphons. In the present work, R134a has been used as the working fluid. Liquid fill charge ratio defined by the ratio of working fluid volume to total internal volume of thermosyphon, heat flux and wind speed of condensation have been used as the experimental parameters. The results show that the filling rate of working fluid and heat flux are very important factors for the operation of two-phase loop thermosyphons. The optimum liquid fill charge ratio for the best condensation heat transfer rate was 80%.

L-ascorbic acid가 포집된 BGsome의 특성 및 안정화 효과 (Characteristics of L-Ascorbic Acid Encapsulated BGsome and its Stabilization Effect)

  • Encapsulation of L-ascorbic acid(AA) into BGsome was attempted to improve its stability. BGsome is a bio-compatible vesicular system prepared by dispersion of hydrated liquid crystalline phase formed through hydration of 1,3-butylene glycol(BG)-dissolved lecithin with an aqueous solution containing hydrophilic component. The characteristics of AA encapsulated BGsome, such as droplet size, surface charge, and solution appearance, was investigated. The concentration of AA solution had considerable effect on droplet size and surface charge of BGsome. Several tens nanometer droplet made by sonication treatment did not showed any change of size with storage time. Stability of AA was improved by encapsulation into BGsome, which was verified through DPPH test and HPLC assay.

미세 서모사이폰 내의 작동유체의 유동에 대한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Flow Motion of the Working Fluid in Miniature Thermosyphons)

  • This experimental study investigated the flow motion of the working fluid for various diameters of miniature thermosyphons and the performance characteristics for the various amount of the working fluid. The temperatures of condenser surface were measured and visual observations were conducted. The test results show that some fluid condensed in the tube diameters of 0.18cm and 0.22cm is not returned to the evaporator section due to capillary effect so that large temperature gradients are measured. To enhance returning the working fluid, one copper wire of 0.5mm diameter was inserted and the test results show good performance. When the liquid charge was less than 10% in volume dry-out was occurred fur the thermosyphons of the inner diameter of 1.8mm and 2.2mm.

Coalescence of Two Oppositely Charged Droplets at Constant Electric Potential

  • Electrocoalescence is an active technique in petroleum industry, formation of raindrop in cloud, and digital microfluidics. In the present work, electrocoalescence of two droplets under the constant electric potential in air was studied. Through this experiment, we found that the electrocoalescence process could be divided three phases; deformation, formation of liquid bridge, and merging. And the condition for formation of liquid bridge between two droplets was obtained. For the connection of experimental result in constant potential condition with general case in constant charge condition, relationship of charge and potential difference was deduced by numerical computation. In high electric potential case, flat interfaces after recoiling were observed. It was interpreted through a numerical simulation of electric field.

  • This phenomena of streaming-electrification is generated between solid and liquid boundary called electric double-layer which is generated by potential difference. A charge separation at interfaces between a moving fluid and a solid boundary can give rise to the generation of substantial electric field and at last these can give rise ta insulating failure. Therefore injection of the adverse-charge in streaming-electrified insulating oil to eliminate the accumulation charge and its related phenomena was investigated.

  • It is known that the main source of the area image sticking is the ion charge adsorption on the alignment layer. We found out that the adsorption of the ion charge of the liquid crystal in the cell was physisorption, which takes place between all molecules on any surface providing the adsorption force is small.

Digital n-γ Pulse Shape Discrimination in Organic Scintillators with a High-Speed Digitizer

  • Background: As neutron fields are always accompanied by gamma rays, it is essential to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays in the detection of neutrons. Neutrons and gamma rays can be separated by pulse shape discrimination (PSD) methods. Recently, we performed characterization of a stilbene scintillator detector and an EJ-301 liquid scintillator detector with a high-speed digitizer DT5730 and investigated optimized PSD variables for both detectors. This study is for providing a basis for developing fast neutron/gamma-ray dual-particle imager. Materials and Methods: We conducted PSD experiments using stilbene scintillator and EJ-301 liquid scintillator and evaluated neutron and gamma ray discriminability of each PSD method with a $^{137}Cs$ gamma source and a $^{252}Cf$ neutron source. We implemented digital signal processing techniques to apply two PSD methods - the charge comparison (CC) method and the constant time discrimination (CTD) method - to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays. We tried to find optimized PSD variables giving the best discriminability in a given experimental condition. Results and Discussion: For the stilbene scintillator detector, the charge comparison method and the constant time discrimination method both delivered the PSD FOM values of 1.7. For the EJ-301 liquid scintillator detector, both PSD methods delivered the PSD FOM values of 1.79. With the same PSD variables, PSD performance was excellent in $300{\pm}100keVee$, $500{\pm}100keVee$, and $700{\pm}100keVee$ energy regions. This result shows that we can achieve an effective discrimination of neutrons from gamma rays using these scintillator detector systems. Conclusion: We applied both PSD methods to a stilbene and a liquid scintillator and optimized the PSD performance represented by FOM values. We observed a good separation performance of both scintillators combined with a high-speed digitizer and digital PSD. These results will provide reference values for the dual-particle imager we are developing, which can image both fast neutrons and gamma rays simultaneously.

  • New Oligothiophene derivatives having liquid crystalline property have been designed, synthesized and characterized. New oligothiophene derivatives were prepared by a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction via zinc-substituted thiophene. The structures of materials were characterized by various spectroscopies. The new obtained oligothiophene derivatives showed high thermal stability above 300 $^{\circ}C$ and exhibited several transition temperatures, evidence of mesophase. In field-effect transistors, a charge carrier mobility of 1.9 x $10^{-2}$ $cm^2$/Vs was observed.

Effect of Peptide Charge on the Formation of Acylated Peptide Impurities in PLGA Formulations

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of peptide charge on the interaction between peptide and poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) for evaluating mechanism of acylated peptide formation in PLGA matrix. As a model peptide, octreotide, a synthetic somatostatin analogue and active ingredient of commercial PLGA product, was used. The disulfide group of octreotide was reduced with dithiothreitol and the sulfhydryl groups were modified with N-${\beta}$-maleimidopropionic acid (BMPA) to neutralize octreotide with positive charge in physiological conditions. The BMPA-conjugated octreotide was identified by measuring the molecular mass with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. In the interaction study with PLGA, native octreotide showed initial adsorption to PLGA and substantial production of acylated peptides (56% of overall peptide), whereas BMPA-conjugated octreotide showed minimal adsorption to PLGA and no acylation products for 42 days. Consequently, the neutralization of octreotide completely inhibited the peptide acylation by preventing interaction of peptide with PLGA. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the initial polymer interaction of peptide is important step for peptide acylation in PLGA matrix and suggests the modulation of peptide charge as strategy for inhibiting the formation of acylated peptide impurities.

Effect of Fuel Injector-type Spark Plug on Combustion Characteristics

  • This study proposes a new stratified charge system for low emission and ultra lean burn. In order to examine combustion characteristics of the new system, sparkplug with a hole at positive pole and a common CNG injector for injecting fuel were used in this study as injector-type spark plug. The new stratified charge system injects fuel of extremely small quantities and ignites mixture around sparkplug gap. Also, the system was fitted in a visualized constant volume chamber. Then, for analysis of the combustion characteristics, we examined combustion pressure, lean inflammable limit, and visualized combustion flame according to equivalence ratio by comparison with homogeneous charge (HC) method and the new stratified charge (SC) method. As results of this study, in the case of using this system, the propagation speed of initial flame was increased and total combustion period was reduced in the ultra lean burn in the same equivalence ratio. These phenomena occurred clearly under the conditions of lean equivalence ratio. Furthermore, the lean inflammable limit of mixture was extended by using the injector-type spark plug.
